this is excellent work big homie and well-researched like you even posted the picture of the article ahead of the Doggfather release that mentioned the track "Head Doctor"--that's excellent research and hip-hop journalism. Also dope to hear the samples of some of the tracks you mentioned and pointing out the other albums and alternate formats in which these tracks were released. Zalute!
I always say Tha Doggfather should’ve been a concept album. With a darker tone with songs like Downtown Assassin, Street Life, Sixx Minutes and Midnight Love. After the intro the single Tha Doggfather comes on perfectly.
@@MrByronscott me too. Snoop is my favorite rapper but he needs guidance when it comes to making albums and with song selection. It’s a shame we only got 1 album completely overlooked by Dr. Dre.
Like the new format. Saves you getting blocked and banned etc. Best of luck and look forward to more of these little documentaries with some of that other gold vault shit you have.
Listening to Head Doctor OG makes me wonder if this is Snoop biting Pac again. It was reported by Nanci Fletcher that Daz, Snoop and Kurupt got ahold of a dat with a unreleased 2Pac album called Thug Style in 1993. This album had Gotta Get Mine, Lie 2 Kick It and Thugz Get Lonely Too (Em vocal version) on it. Pac got pissed and scrapped the entire project. If you know these songs you will know Pac says "mind on my money and money on my mind" on Gotta Get Mine. Lie 2 Kick It uses the same beat as Gz and Hustlas and Thugz Get Lonley Too samples the same prince song as Snoop's Head Doctor. Some could be a coincident but Gotta Get Mine and Gin N Juice isnt.
6 mins in and I already heard tracks so far better than 75 percent of what we got on Doggfather. Imma have to piece together this intended version to have a new listen.
That song is my jam. It should have been on the album. They probably couldn't clear the sample in time. I have this song on Snoop's Hits CD, but cannot find it on streaming
I remember when Snoop got on Westside radio after this release in early 97 that he was going to release an EP that would include Midnight Love and would also include Snoop Bounce remix include Rage Against the Machine.
All these songs that were left out could have literally been a new snopp doggy dogg album for 1997 like the original "Doggumentary" that was originally never released in 97 by death row records. There was ENOUGH songs for a 1997 double cd 2cd set release on death row!
Doggfather wasn't great, but I listened to it a lot when it came out and some of the tracks are cool. Pretty much everything from Snoop in this period of time (on the actual album and the leftovers) sound kind of like unfinished demos. I feel like if Dre was still there he'd have picked the best ones, had the beats replayed and improved, mixed better, got Snoop to rap with more energy, and added better choruses to a lot of the songs. The IDEA of Doggfather was great, there was an interview he did at the time where he mentioned using a live orchestra and I remembering thinking it would be so dope, like Doggystyle, but with a Godfather, Italian vibe.
There's a version of the track "change gon come" featuring Krayzie bone. I used to have it on cassette back '98. Been looking for it everywhere online and can't find it
The Vapors BC "remix" is the OG and the DJ pooh version is a remix. I will survive, gangsta walk, c walkin, just watching ft 2pac, change gon come, may i, county blues, usual suspects, tommy and eastsidaz were also con sidered for the album at one point appearing on early tracklists. Work it out was for Shaqs album.
There was another song called just watching feat tha dogg pound and 2Pac. Snoop should put the tracks street life, midnight love and just watching on the album.
Snoop wasn't in control of the song Just Watching it was 2pacs and Mc Hammers and street life was taken by the 2pac estate which is why it didn't make the album. Midnight Love is just a trash track compared to the other two.
When Tha Doggfather came out, 2Pac's songs were still under the control of Death Row Records! Snoop didn't want Street Life in his album because 2Pac dissed Badboy there, and Snoop was on a reconciliation tour. and to midnight love that's a matter of taste, I like it. If there had been street life, just watching on the album and maybe a few other tracks, the sales figures would have been significantly higher, that's just my opinion
@@ahmetkaya-ne6rm No the estate had already filed a lawsuit which is why they didn't use certain 2pac material. Snoop definitely wanted that track his album wasn't that good that was a hot track 2pac dissing bad boy didn't stop anything Snoop still made and was featured on the video for Wanted Dead Or Alive. It was just easier to leave the track in the vault instead of fighting with 2pacs mom.
Tupac Estate received control over 2Pac's material between 1998 and 2000, because until the end of time and better dayz Afeni and Suge Knight were executive producers. Only after these albums was Tupac Estate the sole controller of the material. Otherwise Afeni wouldn't have had the songs from Gang Related published. or daz dillinger's album track initiated. why should she have wanted dead or alive published and not street life??? Gridlockd's soundtrack is from 1997 and Tha Doggfather is from 1996. Check out the interview with Reggie Wright Jr. on bomb1st there he says because 2Pac dissed bad boy he removed it from the album because he wanted to distance himself from this beef. and again about the wanted dead or alive song that's on a soundtrack so snoop couldn't do anything about it that it wasn't on the album because it wasn't his album
Snoop didn't write half his rhymes on "Doggystyle." He wrote his own rhymes on "Tha Doggfather." The songs left off of the album may have not been entirely written by him, which would explain their exclusion. This album was an entirely different project from the first.
Das Album war so schon eine Enttäuschung. Die Leftovers hätten das Album noch weiter abgewertet. Street Life ist eine ausnahme und hätte das Album aufgewertet.

Tha doggfather is only bad if you compare it to doggystyle. It was a step back but by no means it was a bad album. If it was snoops first album and then he released doggystyle, tha doggfather would be liked much more
Very good analysis. I got into rap in 97 and actually heard Doggfather before Doggystyle and I think it's a good album (though a bit too long, can definitely remove some tracks) with some bangers such as Groupie, Gold Rush and Up Jump Tha Boogie.
If anyone's interested I remade the Doggfather album using some of the tracks talked about here, did some new mixes on existing tracks, etc. You can find it on my channel or here ua-cam.com/video/CynyXjzGOr4/v-deo.html
Album would have sold better had they waited until December to drop it and had Street Life with 2Pac as a single. Even though the song would need reworked for a single as Ital goes on way too long. But they could have moved him to the end of the track to get to Snoop and Pac faster
When I was in high school in 97, I made a perfectly edited version of that song that greatly shortened Prince Ital Joe’s long ass part (forget his name)
There are some bangers on your list that should have definitely been on Doggfather. I will never understand why or how Snoop released such a trash album in 1996. Almost like it was intentional
"with my mind on my money and my money on my mind" Snoop / Daz Gin n Juice from Pac's line "I got my mind on my money, money on my mind" Pac dissed, "Nigga Fuck that Gin n Juice, bring me some Henessy" - 2pac / Henessy@@chuuuchify
