It’s something we all do really, it’s a form of procrastination - essentially. And often it happens not because you’re not smart enough and can’t figure out how to grow your handmade business, but actually, because you are smart and you’re spending too much time essentially learning how to do something instead of actually doing it.
It’s a trap, a pretty, fancy, reasonable looking trap but a trap nonetheless! We all need to get out of it, so let’s get into that.

So, so true. Long before the internet came around, my friends and I developed a term we still use to this day. “Sharpening pencils”. It has both a positive and negative connotation. If you’re going to create a masterpiece drawing, first you need to sharpen a pencil. It’s generally a good plan to sharpen a number of them, so while you’re in the throes of creative passion and you break a pencil, you don’t need to stop the flow to sharpen it - just grab another and keep going. However, it is sometimes all too easy to spend so much time sharpening pencils, and lining them up all neat and tidy and in order by length, and getting the lighting tweaked so it is just so, and stacking up more than enough paper, etc, etc; that you never actually begin to draw that masterpiece. The learning trap is a manifestation of sharpening pencils, and one I fall into all too often.

I now realise that, this is exactly what I've been doing all along.
    Consuming, consuming and consuming.
Time for to put in some actions.
    Thank you. 🙏

"...and if it's because you're scared of actually doing the work and it not working -- it's a way of procrastinating, a way to hide behind "learning to avoid confronting your fears." I hate that I relate to this. I think I needed to hear this. Thanks for the video! Time to stop internalizing all this planning, take a deep breath and talk to a friend or someone so I feel more accountable to finally take steps forward with my business.

Always building ideas...Taking to long to produce them...Story of my life. And then to top it all off...Always getting swamped at the last minute BECAUSE I put things off.

Thank you Deborah for this. It is 100000% true. I'm right in the that state which you are describing. Constantly browsing, learning, watching videos and yes, you are true, maybe 10% of that I tried to implement. Meanwhile, I see similar ETSY shops growing with several thousands sales while I struggle to get first hundred.
