hi vin. not sure if you know already but there is a code somewhere on the bottle that you enter somewhere on the b'laddich website - it breaks down the full list of casks their type and age that went into the vatting. i remember mine was 7 years old (youngest) and in addition to a lot of refill bourbn there was a high proportion on wine casks.
Oh man! I didn't know that! Damn. Well I'll know for the next bruichladdich I do! This one is 76 casks, 4 vintages (2008-2011), 3 barley's and 6 cask types
Yep, my first bottle, Batch No. 16/320, is a 6-7 YO with some Spanish and French red wine casks. My second bottle, Batch 19/011, is a 7-8 YO with red wine casks and some juice as old as double figures. For as low as AUD$80 on special in Australia, that's good 'integrity malt' for the bucks. I love this online batch recipe info and I wish more producers would do it. Probably not in their interests, though, when the parcel isn't flattering to them.
You nailed it when you said "not too much of anything" I found it hard to pin point the flavours. I found it dry, briney, metallic, woody with a touch of citrus. It left my mouth dry like a dry white wine but with an oily residue on the lips. I bought 2 for $85 AUD each. I will continue to drink one and save the other.
I agree with the comment about the opaque bottle. However the turquoise color is printed on . If you want a clean stripe to view the content just take a razor blade and scrape off the colorant! I believe that the bottle is actually a dark green color like their Port Charlotte 10. Both of these are superlative whiskys. Very high quality without chill filtration and no coloring added.
Vin. What are your suggestions for getting deeper into whisky? I like a whisky as such but want to start getting into it more. I've tried all the types like a Speyside, Lowland, Highland, Islay etc.... and know they taste different but I can never describe what I get on the nose or palate. I hear you talk about things and just have no idea how you pick them up. Last night for example I bought a 3 miniature set of Glenfiddich. I poured them all and left for a bit to open up and then tasted the 3 of them. They were the bog standard 12 year old, the 15 year old and the 18 year old. Whilst I agree that they all smelled different and tasted different I couldn't really pick out individual notes like apple etc... that you pick out in your Glenfiddich 12 year old review. It's frustrating the life out of me as all I can get is a whisky nose and taste. Hope you can give me some help and advice on my journey.
Hi Paul! Looks like you're well on your way! It can be frustrating at the start when it's all mixing together but you'll slowly learn to peel back the layers. It's like listening to rock music but learning to just hear the drums. Practise really is the key, and not just whisky, smell everything. Like the apple example, grab an apple and really smell it, your brain will log it front and centre.
To be more technical and textbook, try googling for a whisky taste/nose wheel. There are different approaches to it. When I started put, being able to recognize very general traits, such as smoky and sherry, was a first step. Later, it's still general but more specifically you can differentiate floral/malty/fruity/coastal etc. Nosing and tasting is very subjective too since your life experiences and memories are unique to you. Our olfactory has a direct link to our brain rather than an intermediary (that our other sense have) so Google around and you'll learn more!
Last time I bought one of these, they had a batch code on the bottle that you could enter on the Bruichladdich website and that would give you the full rundown of the casks and vintages that went in to that specific bottling. You might want to check your bottle to see if something like "15/305" has been stamped onto it. The only problem is that it is kind of tucked away on their website. You have to click all the way to the page for that individual expression to get a box where you can enter the batch code.
Great stuff. Bruichladdich is great about transparency if you go to the website and enter the code on the back of the bottle you get a full breakdown of the batch. My batches have been 8-12 year casks and they always have a few French oak red wine casks in there that really kick it up a notch. Cheers
I got a comment about this transparency right after the video went live. Absolutely kicking myself that I didn't find out about that early! It's really interesting
Great review! Sounds interesting, will keep an eye out for some. I really like the bottle design but totally agree about the strip - would be very useful and would look pretty cool, too.
You can always look up the age of the whisky in the whisky used in your Classic Laddie on their website; just enter your bottle number. Usually, most whiskies in it are 8 yo and above.
Glad I’m not the only one driven mad by the bottle... and lack of warning when you’re in the heals 🙄. Neat review Vin... I’ve also always found this a solid, quality dram. I managed to score of bottle of the 10 yr old before they discontinued... and must open it one day and do a proper comparison.
I’ve been into whisky for about one year now, and I keep debating myself if I should be lucky I don’t have the reference to older botteling´s or not. I have tried so many good whiskies that other say was better before, so I guess I’m lucky??? 🍀
Enjoy it while you can haha when I started drinking whisky I remember thinking exactly the same as you and then steadily my favourites disappeared. Not to say there aren't stunning whiskies around, but some lost expressions were incredible
"Be sensible". Good words, but I'm not sure I can always live by those. Sometimes, family gatherings demand some liquid! Thanks for the review. I have always enjoyed Bruichladdich, but I have not reviewed enough expressions on the channel. Sounds like the year to do it. Cheers!
Their warehouse tasting is one of the best if you get to Islay it’s well worth it. The shop is awesome as well when I went you could sample anything and the people are so friendly. Not huge profit margins 🧐
Recommeded this to the eldest to buy this for her fella as a birthday present and was told he loved so in the eldest good books. Also hope he shares lol
I'm the same. Not sure why I haven't bought a bottle or Bruichladdich either! Tried it and liked it but not made me run out and buy. So much choice these days.
There should be a transparent strip down the side of the bottle, really! This very topic came up over drams at the Victoria Whisky Festival at The Grand Pacific Hotel lounge earlier tonight...
I've had a bottle of this back home (Scotland) but just come across it here in Taiwan (working,,, kinda) for £35 I'd have bought it but not long bought a Glendronach cask strength batch 7 and Glenfarclas 105 9 year old so kinda got enough in my Glencairn.
The problem with the bottle is that that blue color isn't a label or a wrap or anything. It's the color of the glass. If they wanted to put a sight strip in it, they'd have to completely redesign the production process for the bottle.
I'm pretty sure it's just dipped paint, so all they'd need to do is put a sticker on the side that could peel off after the paint to reveal a space. Ardnamurchan do exactly that
Good review! I need to get around to trying this one as well. It's interesting, I've had the same experience with Bruichladdich - it's either too pricey, or my whisky budget has gone elsewhere at that time. But I've had several expressions here and there that I have really enjoyed.
I was amazed by the smoothness of this scotch, my toung burn very easily and with this one being 50% abv i was shocked how no matter how long i left it on my palate i didn't feel the high alcohol untill i swallowed and felt the warmth on the inside
Hi , I just get a sharp object and scrape a wide line down the side of the bottle to take the bluish colour off so I can see the bottle level , I tried the laddie ten a few years ago and it was a bit more "salty" than the classic laddie in my opinion.
Grand wee dram, even better as this came to us via #whiskysanta at MoM! Will deffo replace it, could easily become a staple bottle in our collection. Fabulous Islay single malt. Always find leaving this one to stand for a while opens it up even more. Love Roy @ Aqvavitae’s recycled review of this one, still chuckle at him finding a good sized dram left in the opaque bottle lol!
Do not buy it it is abysmal, everyone I met said "don't wastey your money" I tried it and they were right plus the bottle is opaque (WTF) so you cant see how much you have left, which after trying it its a major downfall
I had a dram of this in a inn recently and it tasted young - too young. Bruichladdich 10 was a lot better. C'mon, Bruichladdich can up the age to 10 years can't they? 10 years! This is feeder stuff for supermarkets. It's not asking a lot of an established Islay distillery to have a 10 year old whisky instead of a NAS. Regressing to a NAS at that. It's not a bad whisky but it's basically nothing. Just saying. WT

Classic is terrific and highly underrated. I always reach for it if I'm not in a peat mood or a sherry mood. Great barley sugar flavor example.
I imagine this bottle will be gone fairly quickly

It left my mouth dry like a dry white wine but with an oily residue on the lips. I bought 2 for $85 AUD each. I will continue to drink one and save the other.
Yeah exactly that. Like, it's lovely and all, very drinkable, but it isn't dynamite
I agree with the comment about the opaque bottle. However the turquoise color is printed on . If you want a clean stripe to view the content just take a razor blade and scrape off the colorant! I believe that the bottle is actually a dark green color like their Port Charlotte 10.

That's not a bad idea at all! I'll give it a go
Have this one in my bar and I agree, also afraid of that moment I pour the last dram unexpectedly from the turquoise bottle!
It's going to be a heartbreaking moment

It took me ages to find it on the website but it's a really cool thing. Wish I'd known about it before I recorded this video!
Bruichladdich The Classic Laddie is always a solid whisky - well done Vin!
Certainly is. Cheers Jason

For sure. I guess it would cost a little extra to do it but it really would be useful
Just put a skewer in the bottle when you want to check level. Obviously you do lose a small amount that the wood absorbs but it would be helpful.
Good tip!
Picked one up for £37.50 from Waitrose today. Best price I’ve seen for a while. Can’t wait to crack this one open again.
Can't argue with that price!
You can always look up the age of the whisky in the whisky used in your Classic Laddie on their website; just enter your bottle number. Usually, most whiskies in it are 8 yo and above.
Having something of a love affair with Bruichladdich at. I was gifted the Black Art 7.1 by a grateful guest and I've bloody loved it.
That is a might gift!

My value best scotches are Glengarrioch 12 and this. Nice abv, nice maltiness.
I havent treid the GG 12 yet so I'll add that to my list!
Really good stuff. Definitely underrated. Well done review
Thanks! It's always a worry when we cover these underrated bottles. What if loads of people buy it and I can't get it anymore haha!
Great review, echoes my view of the classic laddie. I’m always impressed by it and should really get one for the cupboard at some point.
I kept saying the same for years but kept putting it off for some odd reason. Now I've got it, I won't look back!

I'll get to Islay one day, and I'll be touring the whole lot when I do. Imagine the videos!
The Tin makes a good Cork Store Vin. Nice Review buddy, The Classic Laddie was my first Bruichladdich and it gets better the lower the bottle gets.
Good idea on the cork store. I have them all over the place right now!
Recommeded this to the eldest to buy this for her fella as a birthday present and was told he loved so in the eldest good books. Also hope he shares lol
A fine gift!
This is on my list. Haven't got round to buying a bottle yet.
It’s definitely worth bumping up a notch or two
When I tasted the neck pour of my first bottle of this I regretted buying it, 3 weeks later it was delicious.
It's always worth waiting a few weeks after disliking a dram 👌
@@NoNonsenseWhisky definitely with this one and Toiteach A Dha, for me anyhow.
I'm the same. Not sure why I haven't bought a bottle or Bruichladdich either! Tried it and liked it but not made me run out and buy. So much choice these days.
So many whiskies too little time

Recommend you try the Port Charlotte 10. I love it.
I managed to get some PC Islay Barley this year, so the 10 is definitely on my list!
Hi Vin. Love Bruichladdich whisky. Great overview. What is the map in the background? India and NZ in green?
Hi! It's a scratch map, so the none gold countries are places I've tried whisky from 😄
Thinking of buying this bottle what do you guys think.
Is it no colour unchilled filtered ?
Yup, no colour and non chill filtered. Definitely get some
Love this scotch. Money well spent. I weirdly enough felt there was a tiny hint of peat. 🤷♂️
I always think there is a trace too. The same thing happens with Bunnahabhain 12 which we know has a trace of peat.
Nothing for me this time, but that's not unusual. Ive very much acclimatised to peat now so I barely get it on stuff like HP12 any more 😂
Welsh Toro I knew I wasn’t crazy lol
The worst thing with the opaque bottle is when you're going to pour a dram, and there's only a tiny drop left. It looks good, though.
Just scrape a line down the side with a sharp object and take the bluish coating off.
Î love to try this one 😄
If you can get near you then I definitely recommend it
Thanks for your tip i gonna try it.In Belgium cost price is 59€ with 2 glasses, giftpack .i think it’s reasonable

Other than an odd Port Charlotte, I don't find myself wanting to buy any Bruichladdichs at all.
I haven't but I will now!
I have this now and bought 4 bottles of Laddie 10. To be honest, Laddie 10 was slightly better.
I would definitely love to do some side by side tastings on it
