  • Although this day started out like any other day, it took a turn for the worst quick. I had no clue what was going to happen and honestly, this was one of the scariest situations I've been in a long time.
You can learn a lot from situations like this and that's why I want to share with you WHAT NOT TO DO IN TURKEY.
I love Turkey for more than just being an affordable travel destination. There is also so much rich culture to experience, but make sure you know what you can and can't do before visiting.

They take you, check your records and if you have any record that showing military base, they will just delete that ones and release you with no problem. The fact that Turkish polices try to do their job and want to make you not worried about it's nothing serious but a formality is so lovely ( I don't know how do we use formality in english but it's in turkish translated to " formalite " and " formalite" means it's nothing important but you must do it just for obey the laws . For an example ; You're in street and there's someone tried to talk with you and you did . Then he walked a little bit and stole a purse of old lady and disappeared . If the old lady inform police about she saw you and thief together , the police would come and ask you why you were talking with thief . You probably say : " I thought he is a fellow citizen , therefore I didn't suspect anything " . After that police would say : " Okay I gotcha , but you should come with me and we will make a document about that . So it's just for your comfort , because if we do , it will be proof that you're innocent " . Your situation was like that , they took you just because of they are into their job and make a document about you didn't know the rules and you were not a terrorist that tried to make an attack or observation . If you look closely , they were saying the turkish guy in the street that "it's not that big thing but he should come with us for formality. So please translate it " and turkish guy tried to tell that this . I don't think there's no another country that has helpful and emphatic polices as Turkey . Come on, if anybody don't know any european language and did it in Europe , the cop wouldn't try to find a guy that knows your language to communicate with you and make your relax . And if you do it in America, I think they would punch and injure you until they bring you to the police station .

Some countries have tourist police that have foreign language interpreters who can intervene when there are misunderstandings like this and hopefully Turkey will one day offer the same courtesy. It's natural to be scared when you don't fluently speak the local language in a situation like you experienced but it's good that you kept calm knowing it was an innocent mistake. In the future, it would be wise to check with the government officials in the area you are visiting before flying your drone and get written permission that you can produce if requested by the authorities. If you want actual pepperoni you must ask for pepperoni, if you want pork products you must specify that too or you will get beef or turkey meat substitutes. We like pastırma (a.k.a. bastırma, means squeeze-dried meat in Turkish) and Macar Salamı (Hungarian salami) here. Hello bro, I have some questions for you...
I've planned to bring my DJI Mini 2 drone to turkey this November, but it's really confusing when I read all those articles and websites regarding drone rules and regulations....
    1) If I want to bring my DJI Mini 2 which weight less than 500g, should I register to apply the technical confirmation from Turkish DCGA before entering the Turkish customs as stated in articles said "according to the Turkish DGCA website, if your drone weighs less than 500 grams, it is not required to be registered, and it is not subject to confiscation from customs officers on entry to the country. Basically, if you want to bring in a drone under 500 grams, you are free to do so with no hassles."
    2) Do I need to register as a foreigner to get my drone fly permit?
Because this article said that, " According to the Directorate of Civil Aviation in Turkey, anyone planning on bringing a drone to the country must make an application of technical conformity. So as to qualify for submission it must be in accordance with the SHT-IHA Instruction. As a foreigner seek prior approval otherwise the drone will be confiscated."
I do hope u reply to this comment and very much appreciated the effort, thanks bro
    Nice video btw :)

then the other cop tells the drone.

It's normal procedure in mega cities like Istanbul especially the most attracted places. Plus, Turkey has suffered from a lot of terrorist attacks so you should be a bit understanding about the situation. If you read "The Drone Laws" in Turkey online before you fly your drone that would ease your pain :) Just forget it and have fun next time when you get back!

As lots of terrorist organization using drones for terrorist attacks which came a big issue in Turkey aswell. If you would like to fly drones over places in Turkey there are some requirements like getting permissions and stuff. Note: I can assure you about Jandarma Forces, in turkey if you did nothing wrong you wont be harmed or ripped of as they are not corrupt at all. Those drone footages were amazing, especially the one of bridge. I'm glad you got out safely. I can understand it's a scary experience to deal with a foreign country's military or police that don't speak the same language. For the record, talking about the weather is one of the ice breakers in Turkey along with where someone is from all the way down to the district if the person(asking) knows enough about it. Also it was the best decision for you to have recorded their discussion, so don't feel bad about that.
In Turkey, a drone under 500grams doesn't require a permit to be flown. It's still not allowed to be near airports and military locations. Up to 4kg drones don't require permit in open fields (think of hiking locations and farmlands). Over 500g drones require registeration to SHGM. Police doesn't really bat an eye about small drones. Military is a bit more strict however as you can understand. From espionage to terrorism, there are lots of un-ethical uses for civillian drones that militaries worldwide dislike.
I've seen your other videos on Turkey aswell. Glad you enjoyed your stay.

So what happened was basically you were “detained” by Turkish Gendarmerie because you flew a drone over a prohibited area. The drone lost control because they used a drone-jammer (military uses that too) on it. Police officer who told you you can probably didn’t know about drones and no-fly zones very well and that’s his fault. Since there has been a lot of terrorist attacks in the past police and gendarmerie are very cautious at points of interest like Hagia Sophia.

And someone at the end of that clip was saying the commander there that (im not sure what happened so this is my guess) "we warned him about the drone flight but after we went back he flew it again".
So let me say this they were actually so fucking kind in that video that made me irritated LOL. If some turkish guy was in there with them they probably go harsh on him. So yea even in the first second it was clear that they didnt want to make you uncomfortable, just wanted to make sure everything is safe and sound.
P.S. : After some events this year(some livonian guy i guess insulted the woman police officer saying that send me this woman to my apartment tonight and he didnt get punished) you wont get any trouble if youre not assaulting or doing damages to some places. So if u didnt do any of these just dont worry about anything. Even if u breaking the law but you didnt knew you were breaking it nothing will happen. If police or armed police is taking you or even they are restrain you, nothing will happen if u werent doing some serious shit. And these are never happen to you anyways just %0.001 if they happen you dont need to panic is what im trying to say.

Actually without permission flying drone is illegal in Turkey. In istanbul air traffic is busy, also terror organisations uses small drones for attacks. So not only above military areas, all city centers are forbidden for drones. Police can fine you from 200 dollars to 2200 dollars if you fly over Turkish city centers without a permission. We Turks also need to been registered to Transport Ministry to take a drone license. We have to stick this license code to our drones. And We have to apply for a permission to fly over cities. And to take permission for such historical places commercial permissions needed, they don't give permissions to personal applications.
In Turkey drones are allowed only in urban areas. Police was polite enough not to fine a touristic drone flight. Bu normally he could fine you 2000 dollars to fly over a historical building )))
Also if they could realise that you are recording a video secretly you could have serious problems.
Turkey is a touristic country, so military and police is always polite to tourists if they don't feel suspicious that you have undercover intentions. ))
