  • The Ferrari 308 has long been an icon of the automotive world, with much thanks to its large roll in Magnum PI. There were over 12,000 308's that rolled out of the Ferrari Factory over the years in various models. By far the most rare and collectible of all the Ferrari 308's is the Vetroresina, or Fiberglass model. Out of over 12,000 308's only 712 were ever produced with the all fiberglass body, which made them 331 pounds lighter than their steel counterparts. They also lacked the catalytic converters of the later models, making them the most powerful of all the 308s. Light and nimble with the carbureted V8 singing right behind the driver in its mid mounted position, there is no question why the Fiberglass 308 has become so sought out over the years. This Ferrari 308 Vetroresina is also a one family owned car since new! In this video we go into detail on the early 308s and on this particular car and what makes it so special to collectors today.

'Never have to worry about rust' should be qualified as relating to just the external panels. There is still steel structure under there so a detailed, expert inspection is essential. I've seen windscreen A-pillars with hardly enough metal left to keep the glass in!
One of the other reasons for Ferrari changing to steel bodies was complaints from dealers about the time and cost of accident repair.
But get a good one and they are lovely to drive.

Exactly. The 308 vetroresina has notorious rust issues on its frame, which is very expensive to fix.

I owned a 1976 vetroresina, Australian delivered, 308 GTB from 1994-2003, compared to the US versions, they had the reverse lights in the rear bumper(fender) with a full signal light in lieu of an integrated reverse light. Also wet-sump as opposed to the European dry sump versions, that also only had one tail pipe.

Heck yeah that 300 pounds is SIGNIFICANT!!!!
That’s the equivalent of three average California hotties body weight, or 2 KIM KARDASHIAN REAR ENDS!!!!

Sorry Colleen but these are notorious for hidden rust especially euro cars ! Many that have presented for restoration have chocked owners finding this out the hard way! Buyer beware always!

Rust in vetroresina? I don't think

@@motorfab7014 there's still lots of steel on that car that is vulnerable to rust. The unpanels are really bad. My dad had a steel bodied 308gtb and the parts that rust are the same parts that are steel on the fibreglass bodied car.

One thing I've picked up on about Ferraris over the years is how the shade of red has changed. Some years it was more tinted towards orange and other years it was a deeper red. Lamborghini has used a very intense red. It was about the same shade as the flag of the Soviet Union.

      Komradkolonel,
What a fantastic observation superb Comments 👌
My favourite ❤ Ferrari is the 288 GTO. The official 'Rosso Corsa' can appear red, a dark read, a beautiful blood/garnet red and the few I have seen lately ans some Corso event Italia a horrible orange red. 🤨
You potentially own the pride of Ferrari and its a horrible, almost orange colour.
      WTF ? ? ? 😲🥺
YES . . . the colour fades. Do something about it.
My favourite 288 GTO is the blood red colour.
However, coming from Australia and being slightly biased, I genuinely envy the hombre who bought the 'only' official Right Hand Drivd (Rhd) Ferrari 288 GTO a couple of years ago.
It was brokered by DK Engineering in the UK and it's a beautiful shade of black ⚫ ! 👌👍

@@FrostedSeagull The 288 GTO is also my favorite Ferrari. It was a monster that required some skill to drive. It didn't make compromises like the Testarossa did. It also had the proper shade of red for a Ferrari or any Italian car. I think that Lamborghini had a much more intense red but the red on the GTO was very similar.

This poor old 308 sure needs some work, its running like a bag of rocks wasn't it.......I'd imagine the carbs will be coming off for some work, and the ignitiion system, needs a good going over too, most likely the fuel pump also....But you know all that having seen so many of these cars through your dealership......
As others have said, they certianly have hidden rust issues with the chassis, and its worse because people just assume because its a fiberglass car it doesnt rust....The UK cars get it very bad because of the salt they use on the roads in winter.... But certainly, you're not going to have to worry much about panel rust and dodgy panel repairs using excessive amounts of body-filler and so forth, I feel thats what your angle was with the rust/corrosion.....
    Always enjoy you reviews!!
