@Ben Garland The only thing i miss in the Rhodes that a piano has is the dynamic range. The dynamic range of the Rhodes is limited. Otherwise I indeed prefer the timbres of the electric piano.
I thought for sure it was the sustain pedal squeaking. In general, if there's a Rhodes in view and something is squeaking, I assume it's the sustain pedal
Keyboard players prefer to spend money for keys, not for chairs. I have a couple vintage synths too and that's why my chairs aren't so expensive :) and Matt Johnson plays so sweet.
I am a keyboard tech who has worked on many Rhodes pianos over the years. This is amazing in that when played hard it resembles a Wurlitzer and when played soft it sounds like a Rhodes. Just getting the weight lighter is a major achievement!
I would love to have a full LP of you just playing the Rhodes and the Moog. Absolutely lovely playing , one day I’ll have 1 % of the skills you have , you know what I’d be happy with that
All I want in my life is not a girl not a Ferrari not anything other than a Minimoog and a Rhodes! I don’t care about anything else other than these two fantastic instruments!
I’m imagining the recovery room in a hospital has Matt playing these tunes for people as they wake up from general anaesthetic: ‘Nurse, do my ears deceive me or are those the sweet sounds of a Vintage Vibe wafting towards me?’
The orange colour is particularly striking Matt, very 70s. You just need the matching brilliant orange VW bay camper van to tour California playing mellow piano to the night time stars. It sounds gorgeous.
Dayum! Went from a Chick Corea kinda vibe into a sorta Vangelis "Blade Runner Blues" feel, and then... I hear a lotta Chick's influence here, some George Duke, etc etc. Really glad i stumbled upon this vid.
To quote Jay :-D Matt 'clever!' Johnson. Really wonderful sounds here. I especially like the footage at 6.20 . I sent this to my friend and we both agree it's like being high on audio
At times breathtakingly beautiful, then such a groovy jive it lifts my spirits and makes me want to dance, then chill, relaxing and dreamy again. Your music takes my spirit on such amazing journeys!
i dont mean to be offtopic but does someone know a way to log back into an Instagram account?? I stupidly lost my password. I would appreciate any help you can offer me!
What a BEAST of musician you are Matt, thanks again fir this videos, glad we can listen you play. Will love some solos or improvs from any Jamiroquai songs too! Big hugs from Argentina!!
One of the things that gets me every time I hear one of the VV pianos is how sweet sounding it is. It has that oh, so coveted soft attack of the MKI Rhodes when playing mezzo piano, but it doesn’t mean that you can’t dig in and give it a run for its money. Excellent playing, as always, you certainly do the instrument justice.
Have had the honour to see you play live in Malaysia during the F1 Circuit. Stumbled upon this today, been a fan since I was a kid. Timeless sounds always from you. Thank you.
Sounds amazing love your playing great touches with the moog! could listen for hours, had to play the Rhodes on my Kronos after this I didn’t come close but had fun, you inspire my groove, thank you keep em coming 🎹🎶😎🙏🏻👍🏻
So nice !!!!!! Quite versatile, I am surprised !!! That is creativity !!! Love it !!! I am stunned at the pairing with the synths ! Gives me ideas !!! Nice video Matt !!!!
The Boss CE-2 pedal with this piano sounded sublime!! Very useful that you can insert effects. I hope you release an album with all your favourite synths / keys. LOVE those jazzy chords with the Moog lead.
Wow beautiful phrasing and the ce2 chorus is breth taking thank you I was thinking of selling my Wurlitzer 200 until you woke me up brilliant thank you From Los Angeles and the Angels play on
I like to hear the mxr soft sounds with thunderstorm and light rain in the background be nice you play the keyboards really nice put me to sleep but it's nice relaxing
Matt, your playing really brings out the beauty of this instrument. In my opinion this Vintage Vibe keyboard is its own instrument. As fantastic and organic sounding as the Rhodes but has it's own personality. So glad they are building them!
This is phenomenal playing. I hope one day I can play at your level or at least approach it as this was extremely inspirational. It is my contention the Rhodes sound is just pure heavenly as it just hits the soul in a most illustrious and harmonious way like no other instrument. Your playing certainly highlights such a beautiful body of craftsmanship.
Matt, you're just on a different planet. I really enjoyed this video, especially the Stevie/MJ licks at 11:00. A real inspiration. You're part of the reason I am learning to play. Any tips on theory/practice you can give me I'd me most grateful. It all seems like a whirlwind at this moment, not easy! All the best.
Wow, you sound amazing on basic settings. But absolutely godlike with that phase pedal! This is just great, another piece of gear I want to buy... And your Minimoog faux-trumpet is also incredible.
Thanks so much for doing and sharing this video. Im sold on it!!!!! The fact you can carry it to a gig is what makes it so attractive!!! Can't wait to find one to test out! Beautiful playing I might add!
Here after listening to Aphex twin for hours while I work. There’s something so insanely human sounding in an instrument like a Rhodes or a piano/guitar etc. Not better or worse than electronic IDM, but that contrasts so perfectly! IMO you need both 100% -tr
the rhodes is litterally the most beautiful sound in the world

Nothing like a Rhodes and a Moog.
@Ben Garland The only thing i miss in the Rhodes that a piano has is the dynamic range. The dynamic range of the Rhodes is limited. Otherwise I indeed prefer the timbres of the electric piano.
When Johnson's musical fingers are jamming on its keys, would be the truth.
nice to see professional musicians also have squeeky chairs sometimes
I was just thinking "I hope Matt has a better chair or else he might harm his bottom!". :)
I thought for sure it was the sustain pedal squeaking. In general, if there's a Rhodes in view and something is squeaking, I assume it's the sustain pedal

lol
Better than a troublesome stool!
release an album of those little jams and noodling arounds with the moog and the electric piano, you will be surprised with the appeal
this appeals to me very greatly
I would definitely like to hear this. Reminds me of Herbie Hancock or Cory Henry but with a vibe somewhere in between library music and deep space.
Hahahaha agree
I would buy it now
Yes plssss!!!
Came for the orange keyboard. Stayed for the vibe of a lifetime.
Damn, that Vintage Vibe and Mini Moog combo is giving off some "Moon Safari" feels

The iconic sound of classic rock and jazz that everyone loves, great that it's been brought back!

would kill for an albums worth of just jamming with this sucker as the lead instrument, maybe some light percussion to go with it.
Apollo Kreez yes!
Yup. Would be some serious "downtempo" type music or ambient.
And a bass guitar.
The odd gentle vocals here in there. No words though. An album of Rhodes and Ride Cymbal would be tight.
Something about this gear and the sounds they make that just makes you look forward to the future with a touch of romantic nostalgia of the past.
Imagine a chill Jamiroquai album with these spacey sounds.. all recorded on an old Ampex 4-track
Search "Digital Vibrations-Jamiroquai"
Was going to say just prefer an entire album of Matt exploring sounds in his own space !! This is brilliant
I think you just described the first two jamiroquai albums
Jack Selby-Smith 4 tracks not enough.

I’m imagining the recovery room in a hospital has Matt playing these tunes for people as they wake up from general anaesthetic: ‘Nurse, do my ears deceive me or are those the sweet sounds of a Vintage Vibe wafting towards me?’
"Nurse, is this heaven?"
that piano and the moog were made for each other.
I practiced for a whole hour and still didn't sound like this guy. Most definitely one of my favorite artists.
It's interesting that it's a modern remake of a Rhodes but the form factor of a Wurlitzer.
The orange colour is particularly striking Matt, very 70s. You just need the matching brilliant orange VW bay camper van to tour California playing mellow piano to the night time stars. It sounds gorgeous.
Funny you should say that, I have a 70's camper and that's why I chose that colour!
Aawww
I keep coming back to this. So hypnotizing.
500 miles high......
I dream that this man will produce an album with this instrument.
What a combo! Moog, a Space Echo, a beautiful Electric Piano and a ton of talent from Matt. So glad you posted this after your Moog One video.
Which moog is that?
@@jpilot07 Think Matt has a Minimoog Model D.

Rhodes is the best electric piano ever made it's dreamy bell like tone resonates like no other. Thanks for the excellent performance 👏.
Rhodes with the model d is pure eargasm... Well done Matt, I viewed the video several times. Looking forward to your album.

The combination of you, Rhodes and Minimoog is so laid back. I just melted into my chair listening.👏👏👏👏
5:01 got some Hey Arnold Vibes around here, brings me back to childhood
So nice to sit back and listen to these magical sounds.... let's get a video on the minimoog next! I'm in love with that patch.
There are some points where you sound like Lonnie Liston Smith. I'm thinking of the slow reflective interludes
I'm absolutely loving the combination of these two instruments.

I love the sound of vintage electric piano, reminds me of 70's neo noir movies. Kinda makes me want to learn to play, actually.
Perfect Video!
Beautiful mellow electric piano sound. Also I've never been felt moog's sound attractive like this!
Absolutely beautiful Rhodes sound, especially with the phaser.
I love that you set up the sound mix on the video so we could really appreciate how the piano sounds. Good job!
