Had a D1 and as I recall we didnt follow the manufacturers instructions with those front ball swivels, whatever they are called, but we would fill it about halfway with gear oil and then put about 10 squirts of grease in there. The combination seemed to work well enough.
In the end it was just a weak ABS seal in the old swivel housing. A little sealant solved it completely.
