- Hunting flying bombs were dangerous missions.
Flying Officer Bob Barckley says about this hunt:
"You had to attack them from behind, then approaching to within about 60 meters, and you never knew how a shot flying bomb would react".
Only the P-51 Mustang, the Hawker Tempest and the Spitfire Mk were fast enough to tilt a V1.
I saw and stood next to a real V1 in "Eperlecques", it's very impressive !
The pilots were real daredevils to fly next to such a bomb...
This video shows one of the many Crossbow operations, who has really happened on july 14, 1944.
Some interesting dates:
13-06-44 First launch of 10 V1's, which 4 reached London.
15-06-44 Second launch of 224 V1's, which 73 reached London.
17-06-44 500 th V1 launched.
03-08-44 Biggest activity, 316 V1's launched.
28-08-44 Last Air Raid, from 94 launched V1's, were 90 destroyed in the air.
01-09-44 Last V1 launched in North-France.
Despite Crossbows, AA artillery and frequent bombings, 2340 V1's fell on London.

0:43 Fun fact: Napier Sabre engines in the Mark 5 Tempests didn't have a starter motor. They used a cartridge starter so, instead of making a whining starter-motory noise, they went bang!
Thanks for this information : )
I never saw one; a lot of trees where I lived, but you never forgot the sound and the little stutter before silence!
Think everyone who heard this sound, held in his breath, hoping he will no stutter and fly over.
had to be terrifying
Its 2020 and I am still playing IL2. It has survived 4 motherboards and processors and 5 GPUs. A record for me that will surely stand as long as Bubi's 352 kills.
Beautiful video Danny and thanks for sharing.
Your video really portrayed accurately the hazards these brave RAF pilots faced taking out the V-1 menace.
The only thing I wish you had included in your great video would be to have shown the pilot's view as they approached the V-1 and flipped them over.
Thanks again and really enjoyed it.
That was interesting, everyday is a school day, thankyou for the video
Nice to read, if people appreciate my work :)
very cool images of the equally very cool Tempest, a beautiful, bad ass fighter
Well thanks, you really know something about it ; )
Fun Fact. In 1942 the Swedes found a test model washed up on the beach. The Brits smuggled it out and with the Yanks examined it throughly. A reverse engineering project crawled along for a couple years. In 1944 funds were allocated to Republic & in conjunction with Ford set out on a production contract for 5000 of the JB-2 Loon. Approximately 1000 were delivered when Japan surrendered.
Fun Fact. There was self a A V1 test pulse jet, flying bomb with pilot cockpit in the La Coupole Museum, Wizernes, near St Omer, France.

very nice!!! Love this game
4:38: I say, that is the most genius strategy I ever saw! Who gives the crap about bullets if you got sturdy wings?
Too bad that their adversaries added explosives to the cruise missiles' wings...
Hey danny. At ardmore airport New Zealand they are building a hawker tempest,it will be ready in 2 years!
Hey Danny. No they aren't. They build Mosquitos - three, so far.
Nice flying!
Nice ! subbed
Am I right, that in real life you just had to fly really close to their wings to change air stream and make it tilt instead of actually touching it?
+ZloTip
Don't think so, maybe a change in course but he still came down somewhere in Britain.
By tilting the V1 fell into the sea and was harmless.
seems like tricky business either way, those guys had balls
Ok Ill try it. Great videos by the way I subbed. My fav is Black death. What a mystery! U should do a video about the B24 lady be good that crashed in Africa and its crew bailed out and walked for days across the desert. They all died. But they have their diary entries. Check it out unless you know about it already.
It's a year ago I made this video and worked with V1, so what I remember:
In the Mission Builder you only see the rail. On the RocketTab, select a Target far away, eg London if you put the rail in France. I filled in TimeOut: 0 - 1, Count: 1 and Period: 0 - 0. Normally the V1 departs 1 or 2 minutes after Mission start.
If it works.., let me know :)
Great vid!
That really happened?
No Dorian it's didn't happened, because V1 was so fast and English pilots couldn't catch them(just if they diving only) .If they met V1accidentally and fired on it the bulet was jammed because the steel was very hard and durable. This is a fairy tale only.I am sorry.
@@laszlomecseki5590 He appeared on a episode of Battle Stations called Hitlers Vengeance Weapons. at 30:37 he described what happened here. Though I'm still amazed a prop aircraft could (apparently) catch up to a V1.
On some WW2 footage it shows ack ack blowing the V1s out of the air.
How do you get the V1 to work in il2 1946? I place the rail in and it does nothing
0:19, Do you mean London?
However it's a great video
idiots.....
Please, do the Blitz
My Polish country mates invented wingtip method am i right?
didn't know uncle Adolph wasted them on Poland
The title is kind of misleading 1946 I think the war lasted that long
This is not the title of the video, but the name of the combat flight simulation game 'IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946'. But indeed, can be misleading.
80% of V1's got through.....
