This flick was shown on PBS Channel 13 in NY in the 1970s. Not a huge fan of PBS but at that time, it was one of the few TV outlets for foreign films, a genre I've always liked. I enjoyed this film - it's exotic local, sights, sounds and this actress was very attractive.
Marpessa was such a gorgeous woman. I finally watch Black Orpheus on YT because I heard about but never could find where to watch it. I wish she did more films. Love natural beauties like her.

I have been telling people for 40 years to watch it. The music at the end is so beautiful and get me out my seat every time. I thought she was the most beautiful woman in the world. So happy, finally someone is talking abt Black Orpheus. Everyone should watch it. Thank you so much.

I tried finding her on a US census, but she's not listed anywhere under the name Marpessa Dawn. There's a girl her age named Gypsy Dona Bailey in her hometown of Redstone Township, Pennsylvania. I wonder if that's her.
Her birth name was Gypsy Marpessa Dawn Ménor. However she enrolled in school as Gypsy Dawn Bailey. Bailey was the name of her mother's side of the family.
@@dulcebartira7211 yeah, I found a family tree on ancestry after posting the comment. Her maternal aunt Roberta Bailey Lewis was a successful businesswoman and Ebony magazine had a story on her on several pages. She sold hors d'oeuvres to airline companies.
Thank you for this episode on Marpessa Dawn! She is truly on of the most beautiful women ever to grace the screen. She was so intelligent, elegant and amazingly fluent in foreign languages. Her life story is remarkable. I hope someone writes a definitive biography about her. Thank you, Karine, for another great bio video.❤
Black Orpheus is my all time favorite movie. I watched it as a child with English subtitles. I bought it on DVD about 8 years ago and watch it in English and bought the soundtrack as well. When I was about 20 years old I wanted to move to Brazil and learn Portuguese because I loved this movie so much .In college I actually enrolled in a Portuguese speaking class but it was cancelled because not enough students had signed up. Marpessa Dawn(RIP) was so beautiful and Breno Melo(RIP) was sooo handsome!!They died within months of each other also.I still watch it from time to time. You can see that her Belgian actor husband was smitten with her and she looked so happy with him while the older first husband was probably controlling I'm guessing. It's probably why their marriage didn't last long. I read that her father was Filipino and her mother was African American.I looked them up and Lea Garcia (Serafina) is still alive but I couldn"t find much information on the children or Mira. The scenery was amazing and it won an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language filmThis movie just takes me to a happy place!! Thank you for this video on Marpessa.
Like me, she was a January Capricorn born one day apart. Most of us are reserved and private when it comes to our personal lives. We can enjoy being popular but value our privacy even more. We like being sociable but enjoy our own company just as much, if not more.
I adored her in Black Orpheus ( only film I’ve seen her) several times many times with the sound muted bc I didn’t know the language. Nevertheless as they say a picture says a thousand words . Great 🍿 movie 🎥 in my opinion.
She was a beautiful woman. I was so mad that it was this UA-cam who was talking crap about her interracial marriage and I had to remind them that she's a darker skinned biracial. She is not a black woman and she can date whoever she wants to. Her mother was a black woman who decided to date interracially and that's fine. People need to stop policing other peoples lives. I'm sick of people acting like biracial people have to date a black person when they do not. Lungs they're not disrespectful and self loathing they can date whoever they want to.
Who ever said biracial people had to date only blacks when most don't? I've never heard anybody say anything like that ! Sounds like you may have a racial complex. Making it about blacks. Wtf are you watching on UA-cam 😂😂😂

I have the movie, Black Orpheus on DVD. In my youth, when I first saw this movie on television, I thought it was quite eerie and haunting, but intriguing. It became a favorite of mine. I also felt the two leads, Marpessa and Breeno were two very attractive people. I had no idea Marpessa was American. As far as look-a-like actresses, I actually see more of Halle Berry than Philicia Rashad. That's my opinion. I would love for you to profile her co-star, Breno M. so I can learn more about him.

Thank you so much for this video on Marpessa Dawn. I never heard of her before this video. She was beautiful, talented and smart. I like that when she realized that America was not going to allow her to achieve her goals she went another country, learned the language and made her dreams come true herself. Thanks for giving me another inspirational woman to look to.
Locale...
Yes! That is how i first saw it as a kid.
I first saw it on Channel 13 as well.
A timeless beauty
You kind of look like her
You look beautiful similar to her
You're beautiful 💓
Marpessa was such a gorgeous woman. I finally watch Black Orpheus on YT because I heard about but never could find where to watch it. I wish she did more films. Love natural beauties like her.
she’s so beautiful and intriguing 😍
I’ve never heard of her before - but she really was gorgeous and mysterious. Loved finding out about a hidden gem. Thanks for sharing. I would definitely love a movie breakdown since I’ve never seen it before.
I first saw Black Orpheus. My older sister had me watch it with her and she had the album. I was in grade school and fell in love with this movie instantly. I have been telling people for 40 years to watch it. The music at the end is so beautiful and get me out my seat every time. I thought she was the most beautiful woman in the world. So happy, finally someone is talking abt Black Orpheus. Everyone should watch it. Thank you so much.
Bravo 👏🏾 👏🏾 👏🏾 I love her sound I listen to Bassa nova also her sound is similar and I didn't know who she was till your video I definitely going to find her music thank you

Hi Karine! Could you do a breakdown on Waris Dirie? She’s a model, actress, author, and human rights activist from Somalia and was a survivor of fgm. She has a book and movie about her life called desert flower. I think she’s be great to do a story on.
Great idea! The movie was ok, but the book was so good!
Yes,Waris is beautiful 😍
👍🏽
I was like ‘Marpessa Dawn?!’ Then you showed the snippet of Black Orpheus, and I was like, ‘Oh yeah! I remember her!’
Her and Denise “Vanity” Matthews look just alike just drop dead gorgeous R.I.P to both of them
I agree. Two very beautiful ladies
And their birthdays are a day apart
Yes Yes Yes I thought I was tripping.
Oh never hear of her but she is sooo BEAUTIFUL
This sistah was fine as hell and I never knew that she was this talented!! I bought Black Orpheus a couple of tines along with the sound track! I fell in love with this Sistah!!!
Woooow I never knew this about her…… how did y’all find this about her?
How can you be THIS beautiful. She’s unreal…
She is on the same level of beauty as Aaliyah, Vanity Denise Matthews or even Iman
Black Orpheus brought my Mother and I to tears after watching it on t.v. Only saw it once and my heart still chokes on the memory....
Ms. Marpessa soo beautiful & absolutely gorgeous and her skin tone is everything 😍😍❤️🔥, this is my first time hearing about her 🫶🏼
I adored her in Black Orpheus ( only film I’ve seen her) several times many times with the sound muted bc I didn’t know the language. Nevertheless as they say a picture says a thousand words . Great 🍿 movie 🎥 in my opinion.
I own the Black Orpheus DVD and I never thought to research the actors in it. She was perfection.
Omg love her in Black Orpheus love that movie ❤️✨ thank you for this!!!
That mix of what she is, was beautiful. Black and Korean, beautiful brown complexion, but looks more black.
Oh I was waiting for this one👏🏼👏🏼💚💚💚
She looks so much like Janet Jackson, Halley B and also Vanity as well. She is gorgeous. First time I ever heard of her. Love that she was private.
It was one of the best movie, she should have gotten an Oscar.
She was gorgeous. Wonder why she wasn't pushed to be a bigger Star.
To the commentator regarding how she looks, she reminds me more of Jayne Kennedy.
I never heard of her but, I enjoyed your/her story.
This woman is beyond beautiful
Marpessa Dawn was very beautiful!!! and talented woman.
Never heard of her, now I'm obsessed.
I'm from Pittsburgh and, virtually, no one has heard of her. Amazing!
Marpessa Dawn was 1 of those unknown gems in Hollywood's earlier years an extremely beautiful woman
Her skin is beautiful even in black and white film. It glows! Wow they were a different breed back then.
Yassss i wanted to know more about her. Thank you queen.
Thank you for sharing this story about Ms. Markessa. She was a natural Black Phillipino beauty nobody really even talks about.
Yes a breakdown on Black Orpheus. I fell in love with that movie at 10 years old and still remains one of my favorites.
Omg!!!! So happy you did this on her. I absolutely love her and wished there was so much more on her.
There are some images of Marpessa in her later years, and even with white hair and age she was still absolutely lovely.
Her dad was Filipino .
Oh lordt. She looks black so..
Who ever said biracial people had to date only blacks when most don't? I've never heard anybody say anything like that ! Sounds like you may have a racial complex. Making it about blacks. Wtf are you watching on UA-cam 😂😂😂
Lace cocoa..She was a Black Woman she lived through the Jim Crow Era in Racist WHITE Supremacist America so get a 'grip' it is what it is or what it was luckily she wasn't Lynched in America during that time [yes] Black men , Black Women and Black children were Lynched..And Lace cocoa nobody cares about who this Black Woman dated and married 'cuz' for most Black people in America 'Whitey' white men or white women ain't [never] been 'Where its at' girl , Ew! Mzungu white folks 'mutants' make my 'eyeballs' 👁👁🤮🤮🤢🤢'Vomit'! But the 'sistah' she was drop dead gorgeous a Black [goddess] May she Rest In Power! Hallelu-YAH!
@@lexh5121 No she doesn’t she clearly has Filipino features
I have the movie, Black Orpheus on DVD. In my youth, when I first saw this movie on television, I thought it was quite eerie and haunting, but intriguing. It became a favorite of mine. I also felt the two leads, Marpessa and Breeno were two very attractive people. I had no idea Marpessa was American. As far as look-a-like actresses, I actually see more of Halle Berry than Philicia Rashad. That's my opinion. I would love for you to profile her co-star, Breno M. so I can learn more about him.
I was not familiar with her ….so thank you so much for educating me. One of your best work!
Such a class beauty! She just glowed on screen! Such a great star!
