I find it hilarious that you are this polarizing. I live in New Berlin, sorta down the road from you. Lots of fans over here but other folks have some let’s say “strong” opinions. Not even political in nature. Most are very serious cyclists, whom I thought were pretty chill. It turns out that’s not the case. Kind of sad. I’ve been literally berated for enjoying your content. In fact I was told I’m quantitatively stupider for watching. Crazy. I’m all for supporting local bike anything so I’m here for it. 🎉
I had that exact bike. It’s ok. I had that to start cycling. Issues are the drivetrain is junk, and I quickly needed to upgrade once I improved. But it was ok to start. The zip tie thing does not work well, but I am glad u confirmed that.
you remind me of a mechanic named Ed from a shop called Bicycle Revival in the early 70's. I was 14 and bought my first 10 speed, a Chiorda with a simplex drive train. Ed was a really cool dude, an actual 60's hippy. He inspired me to become a cyclist, that was 53 years ago, have been riding ever since.
I will say I didn't agree with a lot of where you went but I watched both, more to hear the other perspective from someone who has taught me a lot about bike repair and some thoughts on life in general. Very sorry you are going through what you are. From someone who differs in opinion I definitely don't believe it was worth unsubscribing to lose the rest of your great content. I have just started a channel myself. 2 videos, a handful of views and I would definitely give you a shout out but likely isn't going to do anything to help. Ha! Maybe someday it would. Thanks for ALL your content. We all have to relax, listen to each other, and find a middle ground. I'm not going anywhere.
Like you I work on a lot of older bikes. When I find a 'crunchy' hub (19:19) I take it to the vise, loosen the lock nut and cone and squirt in some grease. I do this on both sides, then i adjust the cone so the crunchiness is gone. Takes maybe 5 - 10 minutes max. Seems like the right thing to do. On really old bikes I remove the crank arms and check the bottom bracket. I can't really tell the condition of the bottom bracket with the crank arms/chain ring attached. I find quite a few bad bottom brackets this way. I'm working on a Trek Multitrack now and when I opened up the bottom bracket it was full of rust, so I'm doing an overhaul. Can the bike be ridden without going through this exercise? Sure, but for my work it is the right thing to do. All of my work is charitable (I am retired) so I don't have to make a profit on my labor. I understand this is a factor in how much time you can put into each project. It might be interesting for the viewers to go through the exercies in a future video to show how it is done. FWIW I disagree with your political views, but I enjoy the repair videos and am always wanting to learn new techniques. Your channel is great for that, I'll keep watching.
Great video love watching I’ve learned so much I run a giant rock as my daily and watching the videos has helped me service it myself thank you buddy 👍
i watch several bike channels but I always watch the Bike Farmer because he's the most relatable and realistic. He's tuning the kinds of bikes we have in our stable, getting the most bang for our buck. For instance I learned that you don't need to replace cables unless they are bad, lubing them almost always wakes them back up. Replacing them all the time adds up and is unnecessary. I restored a set of XTR shifter pods that i bought for a song because they were "non-working". A few squirts of lube and they woke up and now I got XTR shifters! All stuff I learned from you. Keep on keepin' on!
I will ALWAYS BE here regardless of the outcome!! This is probably one of my favorite channels as of late... its gonna stay that way for a definite minute 👌🏻✌️
Hang in there Andy, you're doing great things man. I really love your vids and have been silently watching for over a year now, and I truly do appreciate your talents and skills (and humor while doing it all). I think I speak for a lot of people/subscribers/followers in that I am so glad you said what you said when you said it (election stuff). It's what many of us were thinking/feeling, but not all of us feel compelled to make comments about what we really feel on the intertubes n such. I usually avoid it, and this is one of the first times I've actually typed something and hit send, ever. Hearing your rant stand stance was actually therapeutic at the time. I think there is a large community of lurkers out there like me that watch and enjoy, and don't like to fight in the comments section. It's unfortunate that many of those other folks had to be the jerks that they were. I know it's not great for your algorithm, but I for one am glad that those who left are gone, since they seem to be too shallow to listen to a bike dude on the internet speak his mind. F them. You and your magical show and shop are a treasure. I finally got off my a$$ and joined as a member and updated my info so that i can now contribute taco money whenever I feel happy. I hope to swing by your place sometime to say hi, as I occasionally ride the Drumlin trail from Cottage Grove to Lake Mills for Dolyles Dogs (but will now be going to El Mariachi for Tacos campechanos, due to your loyalty and efforts to shout them out for us!)
That's the exact same word I used to describe that video to friends when I first watched it: "therapeutic". I'm sad that it was deleted but I respect Andy's decision.
Be patient. There are worse things in life than an angry Algo. I went thru cancer 8 years ago and was not supposed to make it, We I finally got out (Drs quarantined me and I had to wear masks) I was just amazed how much complaining I heard. All over stupid stuff. I was just glad I was alive no complaints from me. I have a different outlook now and really appreciate everything. I turn 70 next year and plan on a 70 mile bike ride with my two kids and their spouses. So the coffee will be ready at 6:10 AM, it will taste great and I’ll be waiting for the sunrise. One little observation. We are the richest nation in the world and we don’t have any health care. If you don’t have your health you have nothing. We need health care for all! Your algo willl come back just keep talking.
I absolutely LOVE this bike porn channel😆. So, have you ever considered doing an "Advice" column only it's for UA-cam, kinda like Dr. Ruth or Ann Landers and it would be questions and answers about our own personal relationships with our bikes and how to "fix" them😆 or maybe you already do something that, idk. Anyways, love your videos...and your rants. I try to watch when I can but if I'm at work then I let it run to the end and rewatch it later when I have time. I've been a lover of bicycles since I was about 9 or 10 years old. My first one was a beat up old thing with no chain and no brakes that the neighbors let me have. Taught myself how to ride by walking it up the hill and coasting down. Was always fun trying to stop. Then I got a Western Auto brand bike with the ape bars and cool banana seat with sparkles and 1970s mod flowers decorations. Loved that bike. Me and that bike went for miles out in the country, down to the river, to the local gas station for cold sodas in the summer, through the mud puddles and over gravel roads. What a blast it was! Riding bikes has been a lifelong love affair. Keep up the good work! Hopefully things will turn around soon.
Just like the others - still here for you! Consistent bike repair content that isn't advocating for using all of the most expensive, specialized tools is very important to me and I'd imagine important to others too. Even though you aren't making how-to's I've learned a load from your videos, and have been able to maintain my bikes at the local co-op better than ever :)
It's so hard to keep peoples attention... we're easily distracted. I like bikes. I like learning. I like discussing. I'm a right leaning type of guy. I like your channel.
You know, the irony of the situation is I'm a right leaning guy too. I just think Trump is an asshole and the Republicans have become a fascist cult! What's a guy to do?
Crunchy hubs could benefit from grease, but oftentimes it’s not worth the effort. I should probably go back and squirt some in there though, you’re right.
Enjoying the channel, great stuff. I guess you film these videos "out of hours" as I never see you getting interrupted by customers calling around. Our local bike shop is forever getting people popping in and I think the guy who runs it must just be constantly interrupted mid flow through his jobs, which if it was me then I would find that rather annoying.. Either with phones calls or face to face customers. Keep up the good work and I am sure your channel will get back on track and prosper. I did see your videos re: elections but being from the UK I just found it interesting to hear your views.. All the best , Joe
I think that now that the big poopstorm has gone, there still is a lot of cleaning up to be done, and it will take some months for all the brown stuff to go away. But it will go away in the end, and the channel will get wind again. Meanwhile, I stay here, because I find it fascinating to have a live perspective into "normal" cycling in another nation and continent with a culture which is light years away from my one. Keep up the good job, we need it.
Keep doing what you’re doing. No need for forgiveness. It is a shame that people turn their back on adult conversation. It is important to talk about all issues. Love the work and the music
One of the cheap fix-up bikes I bought just wouldn’t adjust out the shifting. The chain was so worn I could push and pull each link…it was close to an inch longer when pulled.
New subscriber here. Algorithm found me after the videos you refer to, so I don't know what it was about and I don't want to. Here's what I found, though. A guy from Wisconsin who talks Wisconsin. My husband is from Wisconsin, so I have a soft spot. A guy who works on bikes and I've just bought my first bike (used) in 30 years, so a knowledgeable person who is also opinionated and so explains WHY he holds those opinions...I mean it hit all the buttons all at one time. So your new people are out here and we are finding you. Also got "Still True" queued up as my next read.
There’s no need to apologize for anything you said. Rational people agree with you. I love the channel and hope this engagement helps. How about some Gib’s merchandise?
Watched until the end. Didn’t see your political opinion videos, but would have respected your opinion regardless… even if they don’t agree with mine. I do agree 100% about the importance of being able to discuss ALL topics, without getting offended, or “cancelling” the content creator. I love your content. Let’s turn this algorithm around!
I don't comment under YT videos very often. I like to hear your thoughts, whether I agree or disagree. sharing your thoughts implies a thought process and that's always a good thing. Keep on rollin'
May I ask what ((Wheel truing stand)) you are using? And keep up the good work on ALL your videos, be it fun, running, or truthful about how you feel….Only your true fans know and respect all you say and do regardless of others opinions …thanks for keeping US and our bikes Tuned ❤😂TwoFansFromCanada 👏👏🇨🇦🇨🇦
You don't need to apologize for expressing your honest opinion. To quote Aristotle ... You will never do anything in this world without courage. It is the greatest quality of the mind next to honor. And, from Lippmann ... He has honor if he holds himself to an ideal of conduct though it is inconvenient, unprofitable, or dangerous to do so. You are in good company.
OK, I'm sick of politics too and would love to hear your opinions on other things as well but can't fault you for needing to rant. It sucks that people came at you like they did and the algorithm is being weird about it. That said, I see real value in your channel and do draw inspiration and education from it. I'm inspired to tune up my own bikes and not write off the older ones. That said, I have also come to understand my LBS better and understand why they do what they do better now. I feel like they take one look at my FrankenMarlin and think "what do I charge for fixing this guy's mistakes?" lol
See my other comment but I've stuck around because I let people believe in what they want to believe in as long as it doesn't affect me kids or other people in a negative way then I'm cool with it it's okay to go off topic just don't do the Hot topics you know what I mean I love you videos anyway❤❤❤
“Hey Andy I made it to the end!” hang in there, we’re with you BTW the algorithm will push your vids with a minimum of 7 words, so..remind folks to write at least 7 words in the comments
I mean I don't understand what people get so offended and salty but it happens and it's getting worse and I was one of the people in the comments and it's probably not a good idea to bring politics in this not that I care but because it's going to bring some slack to your channel which you don't deserve keep up the good work and don't mind the haters let him be your MOTIVATORS, you can only apologize so many times and you've already done that publicly so I wouldn't worry about it from here going forward just pump out a few more extra videos to make up for it 😉
Hey man, Sad about the outcome of those videos, i've been following your videos for some time, and it really gives me the bike workshop, or guys around bikes shitchat vibes. But instead of 3 or 4 people, you are talking to thousands looking at a one way conversation about political position. we can see the danger here. But well this days is quite sad, people migrate to other things and cancel whatever, because they feel attacked, get violent because they lack skills to talk and discuss views on life and politics. On another note, thank you so so much, for all the insight, the humor, and the non pretentious advice about bikes. Keep it going! Regards from Portugal!
Don't let it get 2ya! hell it's impossible to agree with someone on everything. If people don't realize that they need to do some work on themselves and you are not to blame!
I guess u need to give "time" to the algorithm, hoping it'll get "kinder" for the upcoming winter? Keep up man - would be nice to have some sort of shop tour or u give some updated opinions about your recently built (personal) bikes about your prefered choice for bikepacking, touring etc, just diversify a little bit ("the rant stand" -> cool tshirt name idea, isn't )

In fact I was told I’m quantitatively stupider for watching. Crazy. I’m all for supporting local bike anything so I’m here for it. 🎉
yeah, serious cyclists don't like me very much because I think they're silly.
@ I don’t mind it. We are silly. 🤷♂️
Sorry you're dealing with a backlash from what were two great videos.
Thanks hey!
🌮
Thank you!!
Thanks!
For your show and conversations!
Thanks! Great videos, keep them coming! God bless!
Wowza! Thanks hey!
Hope things get back up and rolling for you Andy, I love the channel thanks for all your hard work ❤
I will say I didn't agree with a lot of where you went but I watched both, more to hear the other perspective from someone who has taught me a lot about bike repair and some thoughts on life in general.
I’ll give you the label of interesting. Enjoying all of your videos even if we do have a few differences. Keep doing what you like to do
Like you I work on a lot of older bikes.
I see you made a short video showing how to overhaul a hub. Good job!
Great video love watching I’ve learned so much I run a giant rock as my daily and watching the videos has helped me service it myself thank you buddy 👍
Thanks
i watch several bike channels but I always watch the Bike Farmer because he's the most relatable and realistic.
Thanks hey!
Giving you a comment to boost you up, don’t lose hope to stand for what it’s right
Sorry to hear about the algorithm. But I’m here for the long haul. Love the channel. Love the vibe
Nothing better than a tight well lubed bottom bracket.
@ min 23. Take heart. One of my major revelations as an adult is that smart people do dumb things.
Only the smart people know when they’re doing dumb stuff. ☝️
Really good content don't worry about it keep going ,in a hundred years who's guna care.i love your videos.
Please do! I’m often around!
That's the exact same word I used to describe that video to friends when I first watched it: "therapeutic". I'm sad that it was deleted but I respect Andy's decision.
Dude, now I have to go the rest of my day with the unforgettable close up of your face while rubbing a rear derailleur 🤣
YOU’RE WELCOME
Thanks! Great content, can you add a link for your apron? What is your favorite Taco?
The aprons aren’t available, but we’ve been working on it! Thanks hey!
Sorry to hear Andy! I hope things will come back around for you ❤ support from Australia
Excellent channel. You’ll bounce back. Good luck
I enjoy your content.
Do you wash or throw out your dirty rags? Thanks!
Good question! I was wondering that for a while, too...
When I was working in a shop in the early '80s we used those pink-ish rags that are still available today. They were sent out somewhere for cleaning.
you've inspired me to start farming bikes and I found my local bike co-op so I got started on reviving an 80s road bike.
Another great vid. Hang in there!
Just a quick note for the algo. Enjoy the channel. Keep at it.
Thanks for showing to drop the springs on the brakes to adjust the pads. Didn't know that, saves fighting.
Praying to the all mighty algorithm for you 🙏
I am with you Bike Farmer!
Crunchy hubs need grease 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Thanks for all the videos!
Crunchy hubs could benefit from grease, but oftentimes it’s not worth the effort. I should probably go back and squirt some in there though, you’re right.
Would love to see you customize one of these some time. Colored grips, unique tires, seat, bars, racks, etc.
Mmmm... Tacos!
HEYO! WOW!! AMAZING 🥹 🙏🙏🙏
Keep doing what you’re doing. No need for forgiveness.
It is a shame that people turn their back on adult conversation. It is important to talk about all issues.
Love the work and the music
Thanks!
OMG Thank you!!
You’re gonna love the book! Thanks for the sub and welcome to the greatest channel in the entire universe!
Oh yeah. I like the music on your videos...
Thanks to Bike Farmer, i am farming a bike at "Bike Saviors" in Tempe AZ. It is a lugged Trek 520 medium that i will convert into a Gravel.
Really nice info on equalizing brake pull.
Thank you for the nice video.
Thank you for the nice comment!
There’s no need to apologize for anything you said. Rational people agree with you. I love the channel and hope this engagement helps. How about some Gib’s merchandise?
Pays for the next cable you have to replace.
Yes! Thank you!
Keep on rollin'
you will recover. You post good videos.
Great bike.
Part of it might be that Winter is coming and lots of folks are putting their bikes away for the season and not focusing on bicycles now.
Thank you for continuing to push out these bike videos
I enjoyed your content and I continue to learn from this channel
See my other comment but I've stuck around because I let people believe in what they want to believe in as long as it doesn't affect me kids or other people in a negative way then I'm cool with it it's okay to go off topic just don't do the Hot topics you know what I mean I love you videos anyway❤❤❤
As long as you are being authentic, respectful and yourself, I believe that you’re gonna be fine 👍
I think those videos might have been a misses on the “respectful” part. The contempt was fairly palatable, and people will pick up on that.
“Hey Andy I made it to the end!”
hang in there, we’re with you
BTW the algorithm will push your vids with a minimum of 7 words, so..remind folks to write at least 7 words in the comments
Seems right that a truing stand, is a place of truth.
The TRUTHING STAND!!
Be patient little grasshopper and they will come. Love the rant stand, it's only a few minutes of the video.
I mean I don't understand what people get so offended and salty but it happens and it's getting worse and I was one of the people in the comments and it's probably not a good idea to bring politics in this not that I care but because it's going to bring some slack to your channel which you don't deserve keep up the good work and don't mind the haters let him be your MOTIVATORS, you can only apologize so many times and you've already done that publicly so I wouldn't worry about it from here going forward just pump out a few more extra videos to make up for it 😉
Don't worry, eat tacos!
Dan the man!!!
It is my humble opinion that cycling reflects every possible life lesson. Trans: You can say whatever the hell you want!
Don't let it get 2ya! hell it's impossible to agree with someone on everything. If people don't realize that they need to do some work on themselves and you are not to blame!
TAKK FYRIR! I ❤️ Iceland!
I guess u need to give "time" to the algorithm, hoping it'll get "kinder" for the upcoming winter?
Keep up man - would be nice to have some sort of shop tour or u give some updated opinions about your recently built (personal) bikes
about your prefered choice for bikepacking, touring etc, just diversify a little bit
("the rant stand" -> cool tshirt name idea, isn't )
You are right on point Andrew, Being a self employed small business with responsibilities and life issues also we understand or we don't.. You have to cull the herd occasionally..
