Thanks for the tips! I used some of the knowledge here just to look after my bikes. The brake adjustment was the most useful; my linear pull brakes are all good now. Pledge worked well to clean up my bikes; they look great now! IIRC, you said elsewhere that any furniture polish will work fine, so I used the Pledge that I have on hand. Anyway, thanks.
If I didn't know better, I 'd swear that you took my bike out of my shed, except my bike is gray. I love how mechanics make rear wheel changes look easy. I changed the skewer on my rear wheel and yanked the brake cable out of its housing and it took me a while how to get that fixed, thank you UA-cam. I will leave the tune ups to the pros at the Trek shop up the road now that I have a bike rack that I trust.
Really appreciate videos like this. I'm either learning something new, feeling really good about the choices I made on my own bike tune-ups, or just being entertained. In this case, all three.
Former bike mechanic here, only work on my own stuff now. Nothing in cycling more satisfying than being able to maintain your own gear. I always loved teaching these skills.
After viewing a couple of videos i feel a decent need to give you 2 thumbs up for what you are doing. I am a hobby- machanic and biker / cyclist and i enjoy both, my regular daily-bike and my tuned up street, track and mtb bikes . They are all custom build by myself and maintained. And yes, you had and will have an influence. Thank you and keep on riding. Babba
I’m with you 💯 on external cable routing. I hate not having access to the whole cable. If something goes wrong it is tremendously easier to fix, or upgrade, if the cable is externally routed.
I also recommend that you check the security of the rear sprocket (I found that mine had a slight wobble). Also check the bottom bracket and if loose, undo "nut", clean, apply some nut-lock and retighten.
When I was a kid I used to religously clean my bike with stuff we had in the UK called Duraglit. It was a wadding material in a tin and was very effective at cleaning muck and grease. Just rub some on, leave for a few minutes and then buff up with a rag. Not sure if you can still get it.
This was the perfect "simple" bike tuneup demonstration!!! Only thing I'd recommend adding is showing you adding the grease to the seat tube before you put the bike in the repair stand...!!!

Nothing wrong with the FX4, but I don’t think anyone ever needs more than the FX2. The FX3 usually has a noticeable extra pop to it if you can appreciate it, but the 4 seems a bit extra. I’ve never met a Verve I didn’t like!

Great video. I just pick up a 19 specialized sirrus for a great deal. Almost the same bike but has hydraulic disk brakes. I did upgrade to a more gravel tire. Only thing I would do is drop a dap of grease on the seat post at least once a year.
Great to know how to do the tuneup myselfe, as I just got a new FX2 after my old bikes frame broke. I got a new one because it was on sale and I didn't find a used one in the right frame size form my size. Hope the build quality is the same as the old ones you like so much. So far it's a lovely bike and it rides smooth like butter. I only hated the pedals that came with it, so I changed them to some old MTB flat pedals. Hope to ride my FX2 for at least the next 10-15 years.
Funny story, 4 or 5 yrs ago I bought a stand at Aldi's of all places. You know how they always have dumb crap. Set it up yesterday and went through 3 bikes. One a winner, 2 nd I tied and 3rd an 40 yr old English racer 3spd hub bike kicked my ass. Thanks for the videos and sharing your knowledge.
I spent over 2000 on a new Trek FX Sport 5 carbon fiber hybrid bike…it shifted into 2 and 3rd gear kind of okay but felt weird and almost crunchy….i just looked at the chain and felt it and it was this like black dusty lube on there new. I wiped chain down first with bicep fiber cloth then re lubricated the chain with this shit the store said Trek needs and then re-wiped off excess and BAM it shifted perfect and the crunchy second and third gear was smooth as butter! Thank you for your videos.
Yesterday o bought a BMW folding bike of the 1990 s, made by Montague and labeled by BMW, sold to fit into the BMW car. I am so happy with this 30 years old beauty, condotion is nearly new.

Yearly maintenance before going for a ride... That's cool but even better is starting to think about getting the bike tuned now before storing it. Next spring when you take it out you might just need some minor tweaks and definitely a few pumps of air in the tires!!

I just bought a Trek FX Sport 4 2023 model, and would it be possible that when you got some time, could you make a quick video on tuning that particular bike up please? The third gear in the front will not engage from second? Is the derraileur able to move into the third position or is the cable too tight? It is possible that the cable needs to be loosened slightly.
Hi! do you see any problem using brake cleaning cans for cars to clean up chains and gears on a bike? I used to clean mine and looks like it did a great job and was really easy to use, I don't see many people using it, is there a reason for that? am I doing something wrong?
As long as you dry everything well before re-lubing, I think it’s just fine. I don’t use brake cleaner in the shop because the spray is very intense and it really stinks!
I get into road biking from mountain biking. My friend gave me old road bike diamond bike in good condition really never used. The bike is about 15 years old. my local shop give it full tune up and taping. The chain still had grease it i used brake cleaner, did good job still has some grease on it. Anyway to get it clean? I do get some grease on my leg. Should I replace the chain?
Can you do a vid on tuning rim brakes? Not V brakes (those are easy), but the other types of rim brakes are weird to get them braking at the same time on both sides. Thanks
FX 7.1 is probably one of the best bikes ever for the average rider. Specialized and Cannondale had nearly identical bikes and used to tell people "pick the bike that has a more attractive paintjob or buy fromthe shop where the salesman wasn't a jerk." I'm 100% serious. You'll ride a bike that looks better more often, and buying a bike from a guy like BikeFarmer beats the hell out of the snooty racing guys that infest big bike shops.
You talked a bit about how people are bending their bikes out if wack from loading and unloading bikes in their cars . Have you considered a video about proper transportation of bikes?

As someone who appreciates taking things on it would be nice if a pro like you could help us little guys out. ❤
How much do you charge for a tune up? God only knows what parts would be needed, so just base price, parts not included. A recirculating, & filtered Gunk tank is THE best for cleaning bike parts, hands down. I will entertain no arguments 🤨 Something I learned in high school small engine repair class. you dont need a stand, i will hook my seat onto anything that will pull the wheels off the ground, including anyone else's bike, but most people have a tv big enough to hook onto, or the fridge handle. The best is the railing of the stairs
Curious if I should purchase a Trek FX Hybrid myself. Have a cheap Carerra Hybrid that I bought 6+ years ago that's showing signs of aging, bit creaky for a start, but recently swapped out the entire drive train (1 crank arm, front and back cassette, front deralier plus chain) as advised by my local bike shop when I had a major issue with the chain wrecking everything, lets just say R Kelly would have enjoyed the amount of bumping and grinding going on... Started to do a lot more cycling in the last year so would this bike be suitable for someone doing 30-60 miles a week? Or should I stick with the ol girl I've put some extra money into?
@@Albert5522 what do you WANT to do? If you fix up the old bike, it will cost you very little and be good for a long time. If you just want a new bike, or want one for a specific purpose, that’s ok too. I have a bunch of old bikes that I love to ride, but I bought a new FX2 with upgraded brakes for my long trips. I can load it and if I need help on the road, the guys in the bike shop don’t look at me like I’m pulling into the service department of a BMW store with a Model T.

I have an FX2 as well, and the first thing I did was trash the pedals. Don't know why they put department store components on a really nice bike.

No offense, but as a mechanic, I'd take a 20 year old FX2 over a brand new FX5 any day. Regardless, I bet that FX5 rides like a zephyr!

Totally. I suggest people do fall tuneups because shops are dead and they only need air in the spring. Some folks take the option. Most don’t!

Have a cheap Carerra Hybrid that I bought 6+ years ago that's showing signs of aging, bit creaky for a start, but recently swapped out the entire drive train (1 crank arm, front and back cassette, front deralier plus chain) as advised by my local bike shop when I had a major issue with the chain wrecking everything, lets just say R Kelly would have enjoyed the amount of bumping and grinding going on...
Started to do a lot more cycling in the last year so would this bike be suitable for someone doing 30-60 miles a week?
Or should I stick with the ol girl I've put some extra money into?

@@Albert5522 what do you WANT to do? If you fix up the old bike, it will cost you very little and be good for a long time. If you just want a new bike, or want one for a specific purpose, that’s ok too. I have a bunch of old bikes that I love to ride, but I bought a new FX2 with upgraded brakes for my long trips. I can load it and if I need help on the road, the guys in the bike shop don’t look at me like I’m pulling into the service department of a BMW store with a Model T.
Don't you check the chain wear?
