There were times when John gave you the impression that he liked to live quite a frugal existence, living in a standard New York flat, as opposed to the very much upmarket Dakota building, and wearing a basic watch. Rather surprised that he went for such a luxurious watch brand, it goes against a lot of the narrative about him!
