3:40 Correction, *Jin* is the name of the dynasty that succeeded Cao Wei and conquered Dong Wu. The clan that usurped the Cao clan of Wei is *Sima* clan, led by Sima Yan, who was later crowned as Emperor Wu of Jin.
And Zhang Jiao wasn't killed by the imperial army. He died of natural cause, which led to the Yellow Turbans fracturing and weakening.

@@nobblkpraetorian5623 What actually happened was that Shu was already being invaded by Wei at that point. Wu knew that Shu's fall was inevitable, so Wu sent their forces to try to grab as much land from Shu as possible before they surrendered to Wei. However, the Shu general Luo Xian managed to hold off the Wu attack. When Shu surrendered not long after to Wei, Wei sent reinforcements to help Luo Xian, so Wu couldn't take any of Shu's land before they surrendered even though they had sent some of their best generals to take them.

When I was a child my mother tells me about romance of the three kingdom or she often called it 'samkok'.
She always tells me that Shu is the righteous, Wu is the 'two face', and Wei is the evil.

William Wong the videos s made a mistake. shu isn't the correct name of that country. It's called Shu Han
(Shu represents the area and Han is the actual country(Court) s name.)
Simply calling them Shu would make the court be separatism because only Han had 100% legitimacy during that age.

There is a decent reading of the whole novel in the 80 hour podcast "The Romance of the Three Kingdoms Podcast", by John Zhu.
I just finished it a week or so ago, and I recommend it. Also the 2010 tv series "Three Kingdoms" is very well acted.
The novel is regarded as 70% fact, and the Three Kingdoms tv show is I would say 60% factual. The broad strokes are pretty well established history.

The Warring States period 500 years prior Three Kingdoms, Han Dynasty and Qin Dynasty (First Emperor) is equally fascinating, it’s incredible that these historical records written two thousand years ago are so well preserved, even more amazing that Chinese Hanzi writings changed little for two thousand years, thus most contemporary ordinary Chinese people can read and understanding ancient Chinese text, whereas elsewhere require highly trained historians archaeologist to decipher the ancient texts.

I can expand more on what happened in sequence but not the actual time though. Here goes:
    - Rise of the Yellow Turban Rebellion led by Zhang Jiao
    - Dong Zhuo beat Zhang Jiao and became a tyrannic dictator while calling himself "emperor"
    - Yuan Shao had the actual emperor as hostage and forms a coalition to battle Dong Zhuo
    - Coalition formed with Yuan Shao, Liu Bei and his sworn brothers and his best general Guan Yu & Zhang Fei fighting under the banner of Cao Cao (Also another Yuan Shao ally) and the last ally, Sun Jian
    - Under pressure by Yuan Shao's coalition, Dong Zhuo burnt and sacked Luoyang, the then-capital of China and moved it to Changan while abducting the emperor from Yuan Shao (Confusing innit?).
    - Sun Jian was the 1st in the ruined Luoyang and found the imperial seal which gave him the right to claim himself as emperor but he did not
    - Dong Zhuo was killed by his men back in Changan
    - Cao Cao went on to wipe out the last pockets of Dong Zhuo's resistance led by his general Lu Bu and killed him
    - The alliance continue pursuing the end of Dong Zhuo's clan and succeed but now the emperor is in Cao Cao's hand
    - Cao Cao expanded his territory in the Xu and Yan province while moving his base of operations into Xuchang
    - Meanwhile, Liu Bei set up "shop" in the western part of China of present-day Sichuan after killing his general
    - Cao Cao retaliated and utterly defeat Liu Bei's forces while capturing his family and his sworn-brother, Guan Yu
    - Liu Bei was forced to run deeper into Sichuan
    - Guan Yu served Cao Cao for awhile before being released back. Due to miscommunication from Cao and his forces, Guan Yu and his lord's family were halted and Guan Yu slayed all those that stopped him. "Cross 7 checkpoints, slayed 6 generals" became a saying
    - Cao Cao defeat the indecisive Yuan Shao at Battle of Guandu with just 1/4th the size of Yuan's army
    - Yuan Shao died 2 month after the Battle of Guandu due to sickness. Could be an illness that's depression related after his fatal loss at Guandu which saw his whole army being wiped
    - Sun Jian died. Sun Ce, Sun Jian's eldest son took power and ruled the Wu territory of present-day Jiangdong region
    - Liu Bei continued conquering west into Sichuan
    - Liu Bei and Cao Cao go back and forth for the Central Plains
    - Liu Bei managed to employ Zhuge Liang as his advisor
    - Liu Bei also managed to employ Pang Tong
    - Pang Tong sacrificed himself for the army to escape and create a reason for Liu to fully take control of Sichuan
    - Sun Ce died due to some "mysterious injuries", his younger brother, Sun Quan, took power
    - Cao Cao decided to attack Wu and claim the whole Jiangdong region as his through Chibi aka "Red Cliff"
    - Zhuge Liang was sent by Liu as an envoy and to parlay with Wu into an alliance
    - Alliance with Wu achieved after the request by Liu to be "loaned" the Jing province by Wu (Wu claimed that to be theirs) and returned it to them after Wei has been defeated
    - Cao Cao met Sima Yi and employed him as his son's tutor. Found him too cunning and promised to never give him military powers
    - Cao Cao attacked Chibi
    - Both Liu and Sun's forces smashed Cao Cao's navy and camp. Cao Cao fleed back to Xuchang with a broken army and morale
    - Liu Bei never returned Jing Province back to Wu but instead send Guan Yu there as vanguard while Liu attacked Cao's territories
    - Zhou Yu, the viceroy of Wu and supreme commander, dies. Lu Meng took his place as viceroy and supreme commander
    - Sun Quan got fed up at Liu for not giving Jing Province back and plotted with Cao to take Jing back
    - Liu Bei attacked Fancheng and wanting to claim credit, Guan Yu left Jing Province unattended and headed north to Fancheng to "help Liu attack Cao's army"
    - Lu Meng plotted to take Jing Province then but then fell sick. Passed the attacking role to Lu Xun
    - Lu Xun and Lu Meng swoop in and took Guan's generals Shi Ren and Mi Fang by cutting Guan's armies retreat route in half
    - Guan Yu and his adopted son, Guan Ping, were both caught as POWs and executed for not cooperating
    - Liu Bei lost the whole of Jing Province to Wu
    - Cao Cao suffered a serious illness which was known to be a brain tumour later on
    - To avenge Guan Yu, Liu Bei left Fancheng and attacked Jing to claim it back at the Battle of Xiaoting which he lost
    - During the mobilization to take back Jing Province, Zhang Fei, Liu's 2nd sworn-brother was assassinated by his own men and brought Zhang Fei's mutilated body and decapitated head to Sun Quan as a defection gift
    - Liu Bei grieved for months while allowed Cao to recover his lost strength
    - Cao Cao collapsed from his brain tumour and died before restoring his military back to full strength
    - Cao Cao's son, Cao Pi, took power with Sima Yi still being his adviser and suddenly became Prime Minister with Cao Pi declaring the Wei Empire (He was actually near that status before Cao died and due to his delirious state, broke his own promise and gave military powers to Sima Yi)
    - Rest of the state started declaring themselves as Kingdoms/Empires with Liu's territory as Shu-Han and Sun's territories as Wu
    - Liu Bei died a year after the disastrous defeat at Xiaoting (He lost 3/4 of his 500,000 strong army)
    - His son, Liu Shan took power with the old and shrivelled Zhuge Liang still premier
    - Zhuge Liang, knowing that Cao Pi is weak, launched a Five Campaign Strategy to force Wei into their territory but failed
    - Zhuge Liang died just before the Battle of Hanzhong Pass
    - His dead body was plopped on a chair and his hands were moved by his troops to mimmick that he's still alive and all was but a ruse. Sima Yi, the leading commander, took the bait and retreated while never firing an arrow
    - Wei's forces retaliated at Xingshi but got routed and never attacked Shu Han for a couple of years
    - Sun Quan quickly reattack Shu Han but failed
    - Many years passed and the battles went back and forth
    - Cao Pi died of illness and Cao Rui, his son, took power
    - Cao Rui dies and Cao Fang, his son, took power
    - Sima Yi suppressed a rebellion against him and forced two of the rebel commanders to commit suicide while wiping out their families. Sima Yi would die a year after the revolt due to old age
    - Sima Shi, Yi's son, stayed and became regent (Prime Minister status)
    - Only rebelled against his waning power from Cao Fang and successfully deposed him
    - Cao Mao was placed in power and Shima Shi died to an injury wound during a revolt and died shortly after with his brother Shima Zhao taking his reign
    - Sun Quan died aged 70 and Sun Liang, his son, took power
    - Under the immense pressure from Wei and Shima Zhao, now after their shallow victory with Wu, Shu Han cannot take it anymore and surrendered to Wei. Now, only Wei and Wu were left
    - A few more skirmishes passed and rebellions happened on both sides
    - Cao Mao openly went against Shima Zhao and was stabbed to death during a conflict on Shima Zhou's mansion
    - Shima Zhou completely gained leader status in Wei
    - Shima Zhou dies before gaining leadership, Shima Yan gained his father's status and power
    - Yan quickly attacked Wu and not before long, united the land
    - The Jin dynasty was born with Shima Yan as emperor of all of China and his ancestors as various Princes and honored as the creators of Jin which marked the end of the Three Kingdoms Period of China.

@King Wiwuz IV Diversity is a part of nature. Even if you start as 1, through generations, it will diverse away. What you're stating is failure to have these diversities to think and work as one. Chinese is a very complex society with numerous ethnicities and languages - they said those languages are dialect however you wont be able to understand if you know one and not the other - no difference from speaking Spanish and English. This is their way as working as one, consider it as dialect instead of languages.

@King Wiwuz IV I would say that the Chinese identity was formed officially after the Qin dynasty after the Spring Autumn period, despite the fact that there are many different ethnicity and cultures that were captured, they underwent very rigid assimilation processes. The Chinese system of governance was not the same as the Roman system of governance where multiple cultures are as tolerated.
The Han dynasty was so great that people who are technically different ethnically clings to that identity and consider themselves Chinese. So no, the culture of China was not homogenous in its origin, it is only homogenous through very rigid process of killing dissidents, assimilation and the the remembrance of past national glories and identities that their ancestors were a part of. It's likely that is what China is currently doing with Xingjiang and also the Tibet region right now.

I fell in love with the three kingdoms period because of the Romance of the three kingdoms games, kessen 2 and Emperor: Rise of the middle kingdom. I'm excited for Three kingdoms Total War, I really hope they get this one right since the three kingdoms era is a childhood facination of mine together with the sengoku jidai period in Japan which they nailed with Shogun 2:)

      @Arthirias 5 років тому +1

Even though Kessen 2 is the is the worst butcher of the history of RotTK, it was my first exposure to it and one of my favorite games and got me into the real history of the era. The game was amazing, the music, the gameplay, and the fun characters.
If you are going to make up crap like Lui Bei fall in love with Diao Chan and make up characters like Mei Sanniang, make sure it is on par with Kessen 2's quality. People that love history will dig for accuracy, just get them interested in the characters and story. Really helps thar Dynasty Warriors did try to be more accurate and was all over the place to give you a hit of the era. Thank you Koei!!!

    • @gentlesirpancakebottoms6692
      @gentlesirpancakebottoms6692 5 років тому

@@Arthirias Yeah Kessen 2 is the worst of the Kessen games and is so quirky but it introduced me to the three kingdoms era on a more personal level and in a different way than other strategy games or games in general and the music and atmosphere is excellent. The story is pretty dumbed down and messed up though. I don't understand why. The first kessen game did a very good job of telling the actual story with a few artistic liberties. But then it focused only on one spesific event and its outcome rather than the first part of the three kingdoms era.

There was no invasion of Shu by Wu in 263AD (@ 3:30). They were allied at the time. Wei invaded and conquered Shu due to them abandoning their usual defense in hopes of luring in the enemy and cutting them off/starving them. Wu attempted to help by invading Wei elsewhere on their border but withdrew once Shu fell. They later sent an expeditionary force to "help Shu" but really to gain some territory of their former allies.

Very good! A brief description of how the 3 kingdoms played out in Chinese history and well illustrated. The 3 kingdoms warfare, politics, greediness, loads of mental and military tactics etc.. formed the basis of future marketing and survival skills for later generation. Some of the methods were not in a righteous manner, but still able to achieved the desired goal - for e.g. send your love one to marry your enemy in order to win/prevent a war. Another is to show strong emotions in front of your subordinates to gain their trust and loyalty and many more.. Modern day, it is similar to acting or shoe polishing! ha, ha..

Within two generations, the Jin dynasty would itself be plunged into an extremely deadly civil war, dubbed the War of the Eight Kings
It was terrible and plunged the entirety of China into chaos again, and northern barbarian steppe nomads exploited this and began a reign of terror that lasted for more than a hundred years - that was a time when the Chinese people legitimately faced an existential crisis
