I bought a 21 S-Works frame last year and built it up with XT drivetrain and brakes, WAO Faction wheels with DT350’s, Bike-Yoke dropper and some Trail1 carbon bars. Bike is right about 27.5 lbs. As trail bikes go it’s on the lighter side and, to your point, can be set up to race XC or endurance events. The engineering of the frame is impressive. If you noticed, the chain line on these bikes is perfect. I have a SJ EVO as well. They’re both great.
Amazing bike, I recently bought my comp carbon x01 build. Installed Nobl TR32 DT240 with Berd spokes and light tires, carbon cranks, carbon handlebars got it down to 25lbs in s4 ! It climbs so well that I been PR’ing climbs i set when I was 40lbs lighter in weight
I got this exact version (from the 2022 model year) for about 6 months now and I absolutely love it. The cable routing, the chainstay and downtube protection, the swat door, the udh hanger. It really feels like they thought of everything. The only things I didn't like were the pedal bob (although it's sweetened by a very active rear end), the relatively small front chainring and relatively short dropper post.
Good points! I plan to make some changes to it, chainring, wheels, bars and probably dropper. Pedal bob tamed with a bit more compression? What do you think? Do you keep in open or pedal mode?
@@LoveMTB yeah a bit more compression definitely helps. I usually just leave it fully open and close it gradually according to how fast the guy I'm riding with is 😅
I ride a Specialized Chisel, which is a light aluminum XC bike. I've also ridden my buddy's carbon fiber Stumpjumper and I can tell you it did NOT feel light or nimble. While I was putting out around 120W, my friend was struggling to keep up and he's in much better shape than I am. I ended up having to ride the Stumpjumper back to the trail head because he bonked after around 40 minutes. That being said, the bike feels like a monster truck and it eats up rock gardens and roots like nothing else I've ridden. Cheers from NY
I did buy this bike two weeks ago in Switzerland s4 in the Gloss White/Black version. The Shop sold me this Bike for 2800 CHF (3130 US / 2800 Euro). which is a absolutely insane price for this bike. I usually buy Scott Genius Bikes, but the new 2023 version with the hidden rear shock are expensive. I did instal a Dirtskirt protection on the rear carbon linkage gap to protect it from rocks. I also did replace the Butcher T9 front tire with a ground control grit t7 for faster rolling speed and save up the butcher for the next Winter. This Bike is a dream😊
I sold my only car and bought the 2022 comp carbon s3 5 months ago for 16 mile per day commuting on roads and rough trails. Never had so much fun going to work. lol.
Like you, I've just purchased the S2 and it feels really fun to ride when compared to my 2020 Alloy Stumpy. I do prefer Shimano when it comes to the shifter but the smoothness of changing gears of the NX is much better, not sure how to make it smoother and quieter. As for upgrades and accessories I've got the Shimano Saint pedals and am waiting on a Renthal Fatbar Carbon V2 with 40mm rise. I also got a Syncros mudguard for the 34 Forks and finally the FoxFolk Dirtskirt. Can't wait to ride it this weekend!
Another Trial/XC option. My 2021 GIANT Trance 29 2 *(aluminum)* is pretty much the same weight stock as this carbon fame and I was able to get it under 29lbs with a lighter wheelset. Conservative trail geo with a modern XC feel. SLX build, 130/115mm. (2022: 130/120) for $800 less but resin pads and rotors.
Funny one a way that you said that. My wife’s bike, the carbon version of yours, was stolen together with my ARC. This is a replacement for it, could not find the old Trance anymore. She absolutely loved it!
I built a carbon trail bike with Sram XX1 drivetrain components, Manitou 130mm fork, carbon wheels with Hope hubs, Maxxis tires, carbon bars, and a AXS dropper post for $4850 US. It weighs in at 27.5 lbs.
@LoveMTB I started out with the base alloy and have been slowly upgrading and learning how to do it all myself. I think the evo might be abit to much for my trails in Toronto .
I wanted to purchase one of these last spring but were unavailable in my size as were most bikes I was interested in. I ended up buying a Yt izzo and have been enjoying it.
I Ride a Scott Spark that would be comparable in components etc. However the Stumpjumper was my other choice when I made the purchase of the The Spark. My riding friends have been riding the Specialized bikes for years and swear by them. Certainly a great bike.
@@LoveMTB I really like the Spark, it is more of an XC bike which is what I prefer to ride and that is what most of my local trails are like. I really like to be able to switch the suspension on the go, from fully locked to full suspension. That was the key feature why I bought the Spark. Great bike for climbing and can hold its own on the downhill sections.
Epic Evo on paper is more XC than Stumpy. Comp comes with GX and SID. May be better value. Lot of heavy things on that comp Stumpy. if you can have only one bike, perhaps stumpy as frame weight is impressive and is more capable (trail) on paper.
I think it is more like the s-works stumpjumper is not using s-works level carbon. The epic S-works uses as 12mm fact carbon, while the regular uses the 11mm
awesome review thank you!!! I wonder why the carbon version doesn't have the pivot bearings on the end of the chainstays like the aluminum version has?
I have the 2022 alloy stump jumper love it so far. was still bit expensive just could not justify double the price to shave few pounds. I do wish my flip chip was on the rear shock though.
@@LoveMTB $2,800 but i bought it before specialized slashed prices. you can pick one up for $2,099 now. The company did send me a prevail 3 helmet for good faith cause of price slash.
Have you lightened it up yet and how long before you give opinions? Really interested with light wheels and faster rolling tires how close it gets to epic evo.
@@LoveMTB Thanks! Out of curiosity if running a single speed tensioner which one do you believe would perform better pedaling wise as SS? Maybe a stiffer stumpy frame helps in SS pedaling wonder.
@@chriss8375 Hi Chris I have never run a SS so don't know what to think. If anything get a FS with a pedal damper position on the shock? All I can think of, the Epic EVO feels stiff enough.

I prefer Epic evo over Stumpi too. It depends how much downhill capability you want and or need. Epic just flies uphill and is perfect for longer legs.
Wow! $6K and they went with Fox's low-end fork? For that price I would expect a top-line, light-weight fork. And SLX is nice, but for that price, I would expect XTR.
