Nah, I used to work at KFC and me and my coworkers always preferred original. If you go for extra crispy, you might as well just go to popeye's. Only KFC pressure cooks their chicken in the original recipe, and it ends up tender as hell fresh out the cooker.

At least of 20 years ago KFC original recipe is single breaded and pressure cooked. Extra crispy is double breaded and deep fried. Both are marinated in the secret spices that come in a pack for the restaurant. Back then there was regular and spicy if i remember right. The only variables would be how often that restaurant changed their oil and how long the chicken sat in the warming racks. Darker chicken usually meant older oil but not necessarily bad taste. The fresh oil made it super light and the taste wasnt as good actually. In between was perfect but thats the biggest variable.
I think it comes down to whether your prefer taste vs texture. I find original is exploding in flavour although a bit salty but some people love salt. Its the one thing that sets them apart from the rest. Extra crispy you gotta love that crunch and mouthfeel but a little bland and pretty much you can get the same everywhere else like Popeyes.

the original is better, as a former kfc cook the original is pressure cooked and the crispy is just free dropped into the fryer. also the original just tastes way better, the seasoning packet is much bigger and more aromatic

In my experience extra crispy misses more often and usually lacks flavour. I have had really good extra crispy though. My theory is that the extra crispy is no less flavourful but you are far more likely to get old chicken that has been sitting to long with the extra crispy since less people order it.
