Wesker's death in this is more embarrassing when you remember how many people have lost limbs in movies and survived. Then think of the powers Wesker had in the last movie, now think of the fact not only was he killed by a door but the door only took one foot. Albert Wesker died because a door "amputated" one of his feet, I can't think of a more embarrassing way to die.
Brilliant review as always, but you forgot to mention a couple of details about this film. Milla Jovovich's Stunt Double ended up breaking every bone in her body and ended up having one of her arm's amputated and another crewmember was crushed by a prop on the set. Just to reiterate. Somebody died and another was crippled for life a because of THIS. People's lives have literally been ruined and ended because of Resident Evil: The Final Chapter.

It is kind of interesting to watch the entire series at this point with the foreknowledge that one movie is going to barely follow the other and it's own casual disregard for its own internal continuity. It'd almost be artistic if I thought the director was capable of it.
I stopped watching after the 2nd movie because I was so disappointed how they handled Nemesis. The first and the second movie alrealdy felt like high budget but cheap zombie flicks to me.

Unfortunately, the movies here weren't meant to have anything to do with the games. They just stole new creatures and inserted them in the films as the game series progressed. The CGI films are canon and somewhat better as a result.

In the end, the Resident Evil movies are nothing more than fanfics brought to the big screen. Overblown, poorly written, inconsistent, and incomprehensible fanfics that have all the hallmarks of a bad fanfic, including making the main character OC do not steal a Mary Sue.
+bigevilworldwide1 No one ever said that the games had Shakespearean writing to begin it (if someone said that as a serious statement, he's just a very, very delusional fanboy) as at it's core, the RE games are homages to the B-Movie genre and it's over the top silliness and thats one of the most unique things about the franchise, at least IMO. But even at the worst, the games had somewhat relatable characters, so we cared enough about the stakes of the situation and the fun gameplay could make you forget about any bad storytelling, but in those movies, no one cares about Alice or her world. And even if the games, novels and comics only have slight better writting, that doesn't excuse the movies from being inconsistent piles of trash with a obnoxious Mary Sue as the main character.
The games writing and themes are not the best by any stretch, however at least they don't constantly and consistently destroy their own lore each and every installment. The games have always had a form of liner progression and in very few instances have they retconned any information in order to make the series work. I think my biggest confusion is probably the time table and Rebeccas responses from Resident Evil 0 and Resident Evil 1. These movies are a jumbled mess of Mary Sue like characters, poor writing and development, and complete lack of care to the source material.

Theory: Alice is actually a delusional homeless woman with an undiagnosed brain tumor telling an insane, incoherent story to anyone who will listen, no longer fully capable of understanding that she's just making it up as she goes. "My name is Alice, and this is my story."
That would strangely make SO much sense. A deranged mental patient who spent most of her childhood playing Resident Evil games, to the point that when her mind breaks, the only thing she can latch onto is the video game franchise of her youth. She played it as a kid, and she played it as an adult, so she puts herself at different stages of her life into the main character roll of the franchise. However, because her mind is slowly deteriorating, she can't remember exactly how things happened. As such, when she tells her story of how she was the hero of the universe in which her games took place, the story gradually becomes less connected with the actual story of the games. There will still be aspects of the games, given that it is the only thing that her broken mind can hold onto, but they won't make sense. A giant zombie with a massive axe and nails in his heaf will show up, because it was in the game, but she doesn't know where to put it. Jill will return with a mind altering robot on her chest, but it will only LOOK like the game, because Alice cannot remember what happened in the game. Her story will continue to fall apart as time goes on and her ability for rational thought disappears, until finally, the story ends when her mind is so broken that she is incapable of speech. Sorry...that idea was so good that I just started having my creative juices flow uncontrollably.

It's actually pretty adorable how much Anderson obviously loves his wife, seems like something you maybe don't see too often with Hollywood celebrity couples... But the confirm that Leon and Ada were killed by some random ass mutant in the white house battle and that Jill was killed be Wesker. While Chris they never say anything about his fate other then that at the end of Afterlife him and Claire were taken by different Umbrella Helicopters at the end of that film. SO he's probably as good as dead.
Angela Ashford, who was basically a renamed Sherry Berkin, so I can see how you forgot, if you even want to count her. The movie seemed to forget she was supposed to be based on a character from the games. She completely disappeared from the timeline. I think I’ve heard the novelization implies something happened to her, but IIRC even the novelization brushes it off.

What happened? Well Resident Evil (the first movie) was the best of these flicks because Paul Anderson went in it to make a movie... his original plan was to make a side story that could be considered canon to the games themselves and some people back then actually did accept the first film as canon. What happened was the director Paul Anderson, met the actress who played Alice and the two started dating... they got married and since Paul Anderson still had the movie rights to Resident Evil's Live Action flicks, he kept shitting out scripts not putting any thought into them and putting his wife in the star role not only to embezzle like crazy, but to have flicks of his wife kicking ass to masturabte too. That's why the story is the way it is... With the exception of, no character but Alice is important or contributes anything to the story, even if unlike Alice they're actually from the game this is based on, everything else is an after thought being made up as things go along. Being able to masturbate to his wife fighting CGI is as far as Paul Anderson gave a shit. It's also why he changed the ending so that Alice doesn't die at the end of Final Chapter... pulling a morality test that wouldn't fly even in an episode of the original Power Rangers one that makes less sense the more you think about it "Let's make up a false incentive for you not to save the world, because if humanity's only hope for survival isn't a 100% morally strong person, then why fucking bother?".... The point is to masturbate to his wife fighting people... NOTHING ELSE..... What would kill his boner more than her dying?
This also doesn't help that Shinji Mikami wasn't involved in any of the sequels outside of the first one. The first was the best because it was much closer to the atmosphere of the games than any of the sequels could ever be. Apocalypse may be closer in references, but it rather shat on those references than respect them.
+Antichrist2000 Still, at least the first Paul WS Anderson movie had a main soundtrack theme that fit the Survival Horror tone (even if the rest of Marilyn Manson's musical score is over-the-top and out of place), did not give Alice superpowers and required her to sometimes need help (like defeating the Licker), provided a plot that could somewhat fit within the Resident Evil universe (before having Alice take over everything), and at least attempted to make something dark, gritty, and claustrophobic (as oppose to all the sequels that turned it into an X-Men knockoff with more explosions, overblown acrobatics, and fist-fights than actual scares and feelings of danger). The first one was still mediocre in my opinion, though, and it mostly only looks good at points due to the quality of its sequels.
Mark Cobuzzi back in 2002, fans were willing to accept the first movie as canon. It could have simply been an alternative story set in the game universe that even provided an origin story to the T Virus, and because no locations or characters from the games were used in the movie, it didn’t really mess with any established lore from the games. That was no longer possible though with Apocalypse.

I want the reboot to have a scene where a red haired lady walks up to Wesker from RE 1 and says. "I am Alice I work for the Umbrella Corporation." Then Wesker says "Umbrella?" Then he shoots her in the face. And then Barry shouts "Wesker!!!"
Thank you for covering this movie series from beginning to end. Frick, I remember back when you started these, back in the day. One thing I will never understand is that every video game movie practically bombs, commercially and critically, yet this series lived on seemingly forever. So yeah, you can finally put your sandwich out to pasture.... well, until that reboot happens.

They all made money worldwide , the overseas market is what kept the series going , it was a very profitable series for Sony and not just in the theaters

A series of horror movies that initially start out as a story of a boy looking into a creepy Tall Man to find that the guy has a portal to a different dimension, and a ball that drills out people's brains. However, as each movie goes along, it mostly drops the psychological horror of the first in favor of more wacky set pieces. Still for five movies over the course of 37 years, it had a (mostly) tight continuity. While there are some sudden lore changes, it was never as drastic as Resident Evil: The Final Chapter.

The twist of Alice herself being a clone is actually very appropriate for this series. it symbolizes how people wasted their time watching them over years leading to something that did not matter in the long run. it all amounted to nothing. I am a regular guy who likes good movies and I am proud to say I never paid to watch ANY of the RE films.
This is the way the Paul W.S. Anderson Resident Evil movie ends. Not with a whimper, but with a loud cry of BOOOOOOOOOOOO. Glad to see that we god this mess over with after more than 15 years.

Transformers still has its leaps in logic. Like how Cybertron was supposedly destroyed in Dark of the Moon, yet it's still around in The Last Knight. Also, Cybertron partially destroyed the moon and slightly grazed Earth. MAJOR geological disasters on an apocalyptic scale are treated as minor nuisances. So no, I'm not giving the Transformers series a pass.

I'd probably view them as closer to each other but like I mentioned the fact that Resident Evil was written by one fellow instead of changing hands over the course of the series really takes out any excuse that they might have had. Transformers may be the WORSE series but Resident Evil is (for my dollar) the dumber one.
It really takes a special blend of lazy and incompetent to make so many continuity screw ups. It really does show thay the writers didn't give a damn about consistency in the slightest to the point where I suspect even the actors began questioning why their characters were exhibiting all the motivational consistency of a person suffering a severe case lf multiple personality disorder. At the very least Transformers has maintained relatively consistent characters and their motivations have been largely the same from movie to movie.

It still causes confusion with Wes Anderson and he constantly has to field questions on what it’s like to work with Bill Murray.
Okay, hang on, I just thought of something. What if Wesker was actually a clone? If there was one slightly intelligent thing that could be done in these movies, it would be that every time Wesker has appeared in these movies, it's always been a different clone. That Wesker that was played by a different actor in the third movie? That was the real Wesker. The one in the fourth one that seemingly died in a plane explosion? He did die, he was a clone. The Wesker in the movie before this one (I forgot whether there were 6 or 7 of these awful movies, sorry) that seemed to be fighting for the good guys? He was a malfunctioning clone that forgot he was Wesker. This Wesker that forgets he has powers and died to a f*cking door? Another malfunctioned clone. I know I'm giving way too much thought to these movies, which must have been made on anti-thought, but it's f*cking Wesker! He was one of the most iconic villains in gaming for a while, for good reason! He deserves to go out on a better note! I like to think the real Wesker is alive and well, sitting on a beach being served martinis by zombie servants.
You know, Anderson said in an interview that his daughter had to practice putting up a british accent. I get that it was to match the previous incarnations.... but with everything else they don't care about in the continuity, why is the Red Queen's accent suddenly so important?
I get the feeling that Anderson only really cared about the first one. But since that was a sleeper hit, he was brought back time and time again to continue it. Only he didn't want to, and tried to sabotage each one with terrible scripts, to make people stop going to them. Until he finally went; "screw it!" and made this. But then I might be giving him a little too much credit.
I followed Phelous after watching his first two Resident Evil reviews, so the ending of this review series had me legitimately more emotional than the actual conclusion of this stupid franchise. God bless.

Definitely Paul. Michael Bay didn't write any of the Transformers movies, and one of the scripts was written during a writers' strike, so he at least has an excuse. Paul is just a hack. He wrote six films and none of them cohere together. It's actually pathetic how little effort he put into the story as a whole.
Paul just strikes me as Uwe Bowle with the RE franchise. He doesn't care about what the fans want with the movies he's just making this movie to make money and jerks off his wifeypoo by giving her godlike power and whatnot. Best.Zombie.Series.Ever!!! The carachters were soooo hashed out and relatable and did so much in the movies :) I especially loved the Alice Clones and how the plot ties in to each movie with no glaring differences. My favorite part was the Potrayal of the Red Queen! ;)
I actually laughed my ass off in the theater at Issacs' "prediction" powers. It was so fucking ridiculous that I couldn't help but bust out into a fit of hysteria. I just wanted the movie to be over with at that point.
It's a very common power to have in anime and even there I don't buy it for a second, which I remind you is a medium where characters regularly have the power to blow up planets on a whim.

Reminds me a lot of Spoony’s Ultima-reviews which had more than one good entry but also ended in terrible way with Ultima IX: Ascension and that one also liked to ignore earlier parts of the series. The movie is like someone filmed all of the conspiracy theories about what is going on in that world from the people within that same ficitonal world. Hence all the contradiction. Solved. It's brilliant and a statement on the times we live in.
The peoplecicle room reminded me of the finale of Rise of Skywalker: Appropriate, since these films have all the continuity and intelligence of the Star Wars sequels , complete with Mary Sue

After the not-return-to-the-roots that was RE7, I was happy to see Vendetta, a film that continued the over-the-top action heavy Resident Evil that I know and love.

The saddest thing about this movie is that I actually went to the theaters to see it. I'm glad to see that the writers forgot as much as I did between the last one and this because the more I looked into the cut plot threads and cavernous plot holes... the more I think that the writers are really just zombies.
That's the consensus now seeing as we've seen how asinine the series could and did get where it actively ignores the other films or as Phelous said only partially remembers them and gets the plotpoints wrong.
Imagine how good Paul Anderson's franchise could have been, if he cared to have the sequels still incorporate the basic events and lore of the RE games into the sequels and continued to portray Alice as a normal human, who is a small part of a bigger universe (like Wolverine in the Fox X-Men movies). That would have made the ending of the first movie really great. Alice could have had her own separate story of her escaping Raccoon City so she can help expose Umbrella (and maybe even meet Jill, Barry, Claire, and/or Leon after getting out alive in the end), that leaves the Survival Horror tone intact. Then, the following sequels could have Alice go on adventures similar to those of the CGI films, and possibly work with the games' protagonists, who this time will actually be portrayed in a respectable manner. Milla could be happy that she plays her own new character, Paul could have been satisfied that he is writing his own original stories that could have taken place within a similar canon as the games (like how "Game of Thrones" follows the same overall timeline as the "Song of Ice and Fire" books, but has a few of its own different directions/detours it takes), and a great chunk of the fanbase could be happy to see their franchise and characters being respected. But no, he would rather have Alice consume the entire franchise and endlessly go on in circles, with no idea of where it is going at any point.

According to Rotten Tomatoes, Transformers: The Last Knight was worse than this movie. I honestly disagree, since while TF may not have been very good, at least I could see what was going on in Transformers, Resident Evil makes it hard to see _anything_ and when there is decent lighting it's so ugly that it makes Suicide Squad look like the Mona Lisa by comparison.

And Michael Bay has some other movies that I liked (except for Pearl Harbor and the various horror movie remakes, but I don't pay attention to them), such as The Rock, The Island, the two Bad Boys movies, Pain & Gain, and 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi. The only Paul W.S. Anderson movie I liked (or for the most part tolerated) was the 2008 remake of Death Race, and that's it.
Naw I have to disagree, Michael Bay sucks at his geography and action continuity. It's like you keep asking where are these characters now? or how did they end up right here? People Bamf out of thin air a lot in his TF movies. Yet for some strange reason if it's not transformers the other movies he directs seem to have competent geography and character location spotting. With anderson despite the abuse in shakey cam and slo mo , you know where the characters are and the location. But The shakey cam hinders the vision when it comes to what's killing them, let alone chasing them. he steady's the cam for the wide shots or in the case of ruby rose flying into a fan for a cgi gore effect. shitty lighting and bass blasting in your ear also does not make an exciting action scene. This is a shame too cause he never resorted to these type of techniques in the beginning. Seems like he picked up these techniques cause they were popular in action movies so he wants to try it. Oh wait, he's not very good at it to begin with. But no body is telling him that this shit is not working in his movies and he needs to stop and go back to basics. Could you even imagining him directing another Mortal Kombat with the way he directs these RE films? I'm just holding out for hope that if he does direct a new and original movie he would learn to go back to his old film style and tell a damn story, a coherent story. Or he can finally cut loose and give us something exciting again with a kickass tune playing in the background.

I have a theory. I think Anderson was not only aware of continuity fuck-ups, but actively created them. Why? Well, it was the last movie and I think Anderson wanted it to be ambitious and epic, not just in scope, but in story too. He wanted to give the fake impression that this whole franchise was building up to something bigger than it actually was. He thought, "You know what be cool? If it turned out Umbrella was actually doing THIS the whole time. and you know what else would be cool? If Alice was actually a clone of Alicia Marcus the whole time!" Apparently her being a demigod wasn't enough, she also had to be tied to origin of the T-virus as well. It wasn't enough to make a big dumb action movie. He wanted to blow the fans minds with big twists and a fake character arc for Alice (28:43) to try and retroactively give the series an ultimate conclusion that the series doesn't earn at all. It doesn't matter that it doesn't make any sense, all that matters is that the audience BELIEVE that the franchise they have been watching was this one grand, well thought out, six film saga. A saga that has finally come full circle with all those homages to the first movie (Because hey, you like the first one, right?). Anderson wants to thank you for watching his movies, but doesn't really care if you actually paid attention. In fact, he actively wants you to not pay attention, so you can be amazed by how great he is as a storyteller. Basically, Anderson as director is dependent on the idea that you are a naive idiot. Just a theory, though.
This makes sense, after all.. as Phelous pointed out many times.. the films wanted to remember things that happened in the past, but at the same time NOT remember things.... That would be a lazy way to try to make a master piece, get enough things right, but wrong, at the same time so that someone not paying full attention would think they saw something brilliant. An illusion was created but phelous was too smart to see through it.
ColetheAero Well it's a plausible theory. Plenty of movie goers watch a flick once and never see it again, filling the time with other films or something otherwise worth attention. If Paul was actively aware of the chronology errors, that make this some kind of Meta-Art film. As long as you don't remember specifics, by making specific references on scenes you vaguely remember, your brain will fill out the blanks, even if the info is wrong. He's trying to give you false memories.

The real twist is that umbrella cooperation was a clone itself, so those different plans and actions of them came up in the movies, they just forgot to mention that somewhere.
The post credits should have been Alice waking up in an umbrella facility after the events of the 1st movie only to reveal they put her into a dream like state to gather data from different scenarios. That would save the continuity, lol.

Wesker's death in this is more embarrassing when you remember how many people have lost limbs in movies and survived. Then think of the powers Wesker had in the last movie, now think of the fact not only was he killed by a door but the door only took one foot. Albert Wesker died because a door "amputated" one of his feet, I can't think of a more embarrassing way to die.
Brilliant review as always, but you forgot to mention a couple of details about this film.
Milla Jovovich's Stunt Double ended up breaking every bone in her body and ended up having one of her arm's amputated and another crewmember was crushed by a prop on the set.

It is kind of interesting to watch the entire series at this point with the foreknowledge that one movie is going to barely follow the other and it's own casual disregard for its own internal continuity.

I stopped watching after the 2nd movie because I was so disappointed how they handled Nemesis. The first and the second movie alrealdy felt like high budget but cheap zombie flicks to me.

Unfortunately, the movies here weren't meant to have anything to do with the games. They just stole new creatures and inserted them in the films as the game series progressed. The CGI films are canon and somewhat better as a result.

No one ever said that the games had Shakespearean writing to begin it (if someone said that as a serious statement, he's just a very, very delusional fanboy) as at it's core, the RE games are homages to the B-Movie genre and it's over the top silliness and thats one of the most unique things about the franchise, at least IMO.
But even at the worst, the games had somewhat relatable characters, so we cared enough about the stakes of the situation and the fun gameplay could make you forget about any bad storytelling, but in those movies, no one cares about Alice or her world.
And even if the games, novels and comics only have slight better writting, that doesn't excuse the movies from being inconsistent piles of trash with a obnoxious Mary Sue as the main character.
The games writing and themes are not the best by any stretch, however at least they don't constantly and consistently destroy their own lore each and every installment. The games have always had a form of liner progression and in very few instances have they retconned any information in order to make the series work. I think my biggest confusion is probably the time table and Rebeccas responses from Resident Evil 0 and Resident Evil 1. These movies are a jumbled mess of Mary Sue like characters, poor writing and development, and complete lack of care to the source material.
The games are at least consistent and people's motivations don't radically change to being the exact opposite of what they were one game ago.

That would strangely make SO much sense.
A deranged mental patient who spent most of her childhood playing Resident Evil games, to the point that when her mind breaks, the only thing she can latch onto is the video game franchise of her youth.
She played it as a kid, and she played it as an adult, so she puts herself at different stages of her life into the main character roll of the franchise. However, because her mind is slowly deteriorating, she can't remember exactly how things happened.
As such, when she tells her story of how she was the hero of the universe in which her games took place, the story gradually becomes less connected with the actual story of the games.
There will still be aspects of the games, given that it is the only thing that her broken mind can hold onto, but they won't make sense. A giant zombie with a massive axe and nails in his heaf will show up, because it was in the game, but she doesn't know where to put it.
Jill will return with a mind altering robot on her chest, but it will only LOOK like the game, because Alice cannot remember what happened in the game.
Her story will continue to fall apart as time goes on and her ability for rational thought disappears, until finally, the story ends when her mind is so broken that she is incapable of speech.
Sorry...that idea was so good that I just started having my creative juices flow uncontrollably.

But the confirm that Leon and Ada were killed by some random ass mutant in the white house battle and that Jill was killed be Wesker. While Chris they never say anything about his fate other then that at the end of Afterlife him and Claire were taken by different Umbrella Helicopters at the end of that film. SO he's probably as good as dead.

What happened? Well Resident Evil (the first movie) was the best of these flicks because Paul Anderson went in it to make a movie... his original plan was to make a side story that could be considered canon to the games themselves and some people back then actually did accept the first film as canon. What happened was the director Paul Anderson, met the actress who played Alice and the two started dating... they got married and since Paul Anderson still had the movie rights to Resident Evil's Live Action flicks, he kept shitting out scripts not putting any thought into them and putting his wife in the star role not only to embezzle like crazy, but to have flicks of his wife kicking ass to masturabte too. That's why the story is the way it is...
With the exception of, no character but Alice is important or contributes anything to the story, even if unlike Alice they're actually from the game this is based on, everything else is an after thought being made up as things go along. Being able to masturbate to his wife fighting CGI is as far as Paul Anderson gave a shit. It's also why he changed the ending so that Alice doesn't die at the end of Final Chapter... pulling a morality test that wouldn't fly even in an episode of the original Power Rangers one that makes less sense the more you think about it "Let's make up a false incentive for you not to save the world, because if humanity's only hope for survival isn't a 100% morally strong person, then why fucking bother?".... The point is to masturbate to his wife fighting people... NOTHING ELSE..... What would kill his boner more than her dying?
This also doesn't help that Shinji Mikami wasn't involved in any of the sequels outside of the first one. The first was the best because it was much closer to the atmosphere of the games than any of the sequels could ever be. Apocalypse may be closer in references, but it rather shat on those references than respect them.

Still, at least the first Paul WS Anderson movie had a main soundtrack theme that fit the Survival Horror tone (even if the rest of Marilyn Manson's musical score is over-the-top and out of place), did not give Alice superpowers and required her to sometimes need help (like defeating the Licker), provided a plot that could somewhat fit within the Resident Evil universe (before having Alice take over everything), and at least attempted to make something dark, gritty, and claustrophobic (as oppose to all the sequels that turned it into an X-Men knockoff with more explosions, overblown acrobatics, and fist-fights than actual scares and feelings of danger).
The first one was still mediocre in my opinion, though, and it mostly only looks good at points due to the quality of its sequels.

Mark Cobuzzi back in 2002, fans were willing to accept the first movie as canon. It could have simply been an alternative story set in the game universe that even provided an origin story to the T Virus, and because no locations or characters from the games were used in the movie, it didn’t really mess with any established lore from the games.
That was no longer possible though with Apocalypse.
So... When the reboot comes out , will we get nongamers wondering where Alice is?

Think about it: how many men and women are capable to produce two or more kids in these conditions? bigevilworldwide1 I'm aware of that as well but you also should see the coincidences. both directors married both star actresses, both movies have the lead actress over shadow the supporting characters. each "final" movie comes up with some BS platitudes of how special and powerful the main lead is. the difference is underworld didn't go too out of it's way to break it's own continiuty. also they don't make nearly as much money as the fast and furious and transformers movies. so you tell me why are they still continuing to be made.

A series of horror movies that initially start out as a story of a boy looking into a creepy Tall Man to find that the guy has a portal to a different dimension, and a ball that drills out people's brains. However, as each movie goes along, it mostly drops the psychological horror of the first in favor of more wacky set pieces. Still for five movies over the course of 37 years, it had a (mostly) tight continuity. While there are some sudden lore changes, it was never as drastic as Resident Evil: The Final Chapter.

Equestron lol Good call on the Phantasm comparison. I love that series but damn, it's got its fair share of continuity errors from one film to the next.
The twist of Alice herself being a clone is actually very appropriate for this series. it symbolizes how people wasted their time watching them over years leading to something that did not matter in the long run. it all amounted to nothing. I am a regular guy who likes good movies and I am proud to say I never paid to watch ANY of the RE films.

Could this be the dumbest series ever? No seriously in terms of just failure of storytelling it's almost... beautiful. Bearing in mind that we had ONE guy writing all of this and that SAME GUY directing over half of it just how did he manage to screw it up to this level? If anyone can name another series where the writer screwed up to this level it would be greatly appreciated.

Darkslayer289 Transformers had 8 different writers and it still managed to confer a more involving and consistent narrative than this train wreck of a series. It's shot poorer but on the whole Transformers is clearly the more intelligent series.
Transformers still has its leaps in logic. Like how Cybertron was supposedly destroyed in Dark of the Moon, yet it's still around in The Last Knight. Also, Cybertron partially destroyed the moon and slightly grazed Earth. MAJOR geological disasters on an apocalyptic scale are treated as minor nuisances. So no, I'm not giving the Transformers series a pass.
Darkslayer289 Oh definitely don't give it a pass, I was just saying that on the dumbness scale Transformers is about an 7-8 where as Resident Evil is about a 9. I'd probably view them as closer to each other but like I mentioned the fact that Resident Evil was written by one fellow instead of changing hands over the course of the series really takes out any excuse that they might have had. Transformers may be the WORSE series but Resident Evil is (for my dollar) the dumber one.
It really takes a special blend of lazy and incompetent to make so many continuity screw ups.
It really does show thay the writers didn't give a damn about consistency in the slightest to the point where I suspect even the actors began questioning why their characters were exhibiting all the motivational consistency of a person suffering a severe case lf multiple personality disorder.
At the very least Transformers has maintained relatively consistent characters and their motivations have been largely the same from movie to movie.

It still causes confusion with Wes Anderson and he constantly has to field questions on what it’s like to work with Bill Murray.

Okay, hang on, I just thought of something. What if Wesker was actually a clone? If there was one slightly intelligent thing that could be done in these movies, it would be that every time Wesker has appeared in these movies, it's always been a different clone. That Wesker that was played by a different actor in the third movie? That was the real Wesker. The one in the fourth one that seemingly died in a plane explosion? He did die, he was a clone. The Wesker in the movie before this one (I forgot whether there were 6 or 7 of these awful movies, sorry) that seemed to be fighting for the good guys? He was a malfunctioning clone that forgot he was Wesker. This Wesker that forgets he has powers and died to a f*cking door? Another malfunctioned clone.
I know I'm giving way too much thought to these movies, which must have been made on anti-thought, but it's f*cking Wesker! He was one of the most iconic villains in gaming for a while, for good reason! He deserves to go out on a better note! I like to think the real Wesker is alive and well, sitting on a beach being served martinis by zombie servants.
You know, Anderson said in an interview that his daughter had to practice putting up a british accent. I get that it was to match the previous incarnations.... but with everything else they don't care about in the continuity, why is the Red Queen's accent suddenly so important?

I love how these movies went from not remembering any previous movies to not remembering THE previous movie to not even being able to remember itself.
I get the feeling that Anderson only really cared about the first one. But since that was a sleeper hit, he was brought back time and time again to continue it. Only he didn't want to, and tried to sabotage each one with terrible scripts, to make people stop going to them. Until he finally went; "screw it!" and made this.
But then I might be giving him a little too much credit.
The first one was the only one that had the creator of the games onboard, so that might have something to do with it

Definitely Paul. Michael Bay didn't write any of the Transformers movies, and one of the scripts was written during a writers' strike, so he at least has an excuse.
Paul is just a hack. He wrote six films and none of them cohere together. It's actually pathetic how little effort he put into the story as a whole.
Paul just strikes me as Uwe Bowle with the RE franchise. He doesn't care about what the fans want with the movies he's just making this movie to make money and jerks off his wifeypoo by giving her godlike power and whatnot. I'd rather have George Romeros script even if it wasn't 100% accurate to the games it pisses me off capcom shit in his face. God rest his soul.

Best.Zombie.Series.Ever!!! The carachters were soooo hashed out and relatable and did so much in the movies :) I especially loved the Alice Clones and how the plot ties in to each movie with no glaring differences. My favorite part was the Potrayal of the Red Queen! ;)

I actually laughed my ass off in the theater at Issacs' "prediction" powers. It was so fucking ridiculous that I couldn't help but bust out into a fit of hysteria. I just wanted the movie to be over with at that point.
It's a very common power to have in anime and even there I don't buy it for a second, which I remind you is a medium where characters regularly have the power to blow up planets on a whim.

It’s nice to see that you had finally a chance to bring this series to an end. Reminds me a lot of Spoony’s Ultima-reviews which had more than one good entry but also ended in terrible way with Ultima IX: Ascension and that one also liked to ignore earlier parts of the series.

After the not-return-to-the-roots that was RE7, I was happy to see Vendetta, a film that continued the over-the-top action heavy Resident Evil that I know and love.

The saddest thing about this movie is that I actually went to the theaters to see it. I'm glad to see that the writers forgot as much as I did between the last one and this because the more I looked into the cut plot threads and cavernous plot holes... the more I think that the writers are really just zombies.
i'm glad you admit that the first film is a pretty decent movie. they did just really go off the rails from the second one on, though.
That's the consensus now seeing as we've seen how asinine the series could and did get where it actively ignores the other films or as Phelous said only partially remembers them and gets the plotpoints wrong.
if i remember correctly, what he said was that it could easily work as another story in resident evil universe.
Imagine how good Paul Anderson's franchise could have been, if he cared to have the sequels still incorporate the basic events and lore of the RE games into the sequels and continued to portray Alice as a normal human, who is a small part of a bigger universe (like Wolverine in the Fox X-Men movies).
That would have made the ending of the first movie really great. Alice could have had her own separate story of her escaping Raccoon City so she can help expose Umbrella (and maybe even meet Jill, Barry, Claire, and/or Leon after getting out alive in the end), that leaves the Survival Horror tone intact. Then, the following sequels could have Alice go on adventures similar to those of the CGI films, and possibly work with the games' protagonists, who this time will actually be portrayed in a respectable manner.
Milla could be happy that she plays her own new character, Paul could have been satisfied that he is writing his own original stories that could have taken place within a similar canon as the games (like how "Game of Thrones" follows the same overall timeline as the "Song of Ice and Fire" books, but has a few of its own different directions/detours it takes), and a great chunk of the fanbase could be happy to see their franchise and characters being respected. But no, he would rather have Alice consume the entire franchise and endlessly go on in circles, with no idea of where it is going at any point.

Fair enough, but whatever: "reverse polarity" may have been from there, but after that, it's used in every technobabble piece of sci-fi schlock you can find.
So just say "reverse the fan." Reversing polarity is something that you'd only hear a captain in a B sci-fi movie say. Then again, I guess this movie kind of qualifies.

I'd guess that I use the phrase or a variant about twice a month on average. Honestly I was so glad to see it being used correctly for once that it was probably the only line in the film that didn't piss me off.

I honestly disagree, since while TF may not have been very good, at least I could see what was going on in Transformers, Resident Evil makes it hard to see _anything_ and when there is decent lighting it's so ugly that it makes Suicide Squad look like the Mona Lisa by comparison.

And Michael Bay has some other movies that I liked (except for Pearl Harbor and the various horror movie remakes, but I don't pay attention to them), such as The Rock, The Island, the two Bad Boys movies, Pain & Gain, and 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi.
The only Paul W.S. Anderson movie I liked (or for the most part tolerated) was the 2008 remake of Death Race, and that's it.
Naw I have to disagree, Michael Bay sucks at his geography and action continuity. It's like you keep asking where are these characters now? or how did they end up right here? People Bamf out of thin air a lot in his TF movies. Yet for some strange reason if it's not transformers the other movies he directs seem to have competent geography and character location spotting.
With anderson despite the abuse in shakey cam and slo mo , you know where the characters are and the location. But The shakey cam hinders the vision when it comes to what's killing them, let alone chasing them. he steady's the cam for the wide shots or in the case of ruby rose flying into a fan for a cgi gore effect. shitty lighting and bass blasting in your ear also does not make an exciting action scene. This is a shame too cause he never resorted to these type of techniques in the beginning. Seems like he picked up these techniques cause they were popular in action movies so he wants to try it. Oh wait, he's not very good at it to begin with. But no body is telling him that this shit is not working in his movies and he needs to stop and go back to basics. Could you even imagining him directing another Mortal Kombat with the way he directs these RE films?
I'm just holding out for hope that if he does direct a new and original movie he would learn to go back to his old film style and tell a damn story, a coherent story. Or he can finally cut loose and give us something exciting again with a kickass tune playing in the background.

I have a theory. I think Anderson was not only aware of continuity fuck-ups, but actively created them. Why? Well, it was the last movie and I think Anderson wanted it to be ambitious and epic, not just in scope, but in story too. He wanted to give the fake impression that this whole franchise was building up to something bigger than it actually was.
He thought, "You know what be cool? If it turned out Umbrella was actually doing THIS the whole time. and you know what else would be cool? If Alice was actually a clone of Alicia Marcus the whole time!" Apparently her being a demigod wasn't enough, she also had to be tied to origin of the T-virus as well.
It wasn't enough to make a big dumb action movie. He wanted to blow the fans minds with big twists and a fake character arc for Alice (28:43) to try and retroactively give the series an ultimate conclusion that the series doesn't earn at all.
It doesn't matter that it doesn't make any sense, all that matters is that the audience BELIEVE that the franchise they have been watching was this one grand, well thought out, six film saga. A saga that has finally come full circle with all those homages to the first movie (Because hey, you like the first one, right?).
Anderson wants to thank you for watching his movies, but doesn't really care if you actually paid attention. In fact, he actively wants you to not pay attention, so you can be amazed by how great he is as a storyteller. Basically, Anderson as director is dependent on the idea that you are a naive idiot.
Just a theory, though.
This makes sense, after all.. as Phelous pointed out many times.. the films wanted to remember things that happened in the past, but at the same time NOT remember things....
That would be a lazy way to try to make a master piece, get enough things right, but wrong, at the same time so that someone not paying full attention would think they saw something brilliant. An illusion was created but phelous was too smart to see through it.

Well it's a plausible theory. Plenty of movie goers watch a flick once and never see it again, filling the time with other films or something otherwise worth attention.
If Paul was actively aware of the chronology errors, that make this some kind of Meta-Art film. As long as you don't remember specifics, by making specific references on scenes you vaguely remember, your brain will fill out the blanks, even if the info is wrong.
