You can just see the joy in Billy's eyes, doesn't give a damn about the crowd, just in the moment having fun with a master, most likely an unforgettable moment and a career milestone
I was present at the event when a fierce storm swept over the mountain just as they were wrapping up. Throughout the entire festival, Billy, the artist-in-residence, was tirelessly giving his all, even darting between sets to collaborate with as many people as possible. It marked my inaugural experience witnessing both of these incredible performers, and in the time that has passed, I've had the pleasure of catching Billy's act at least six more times. Remarkably, with each performance, he manages to surpass his previous best, leaving me with the feeling that the sky is truly the limit for his talent.
And then in an instant be able to flash back to him playing on the couch with his dad. To Train Train Train, where it looks like he's going to fall off the cliff and loose them....and through Marcus King summer time. Yes one of the joys of modern tech.
It’s a wonderful thing that in this day and age of bluffers, rappers, and enhanced technical “music” that there are still real musicians who only need an acoustic instrument and their musical talent to captivate, interest and enthral us.
I just recently learned of Billy. He's a great picker and singer. Of course Tommy is a great picker too. As an old guitar player myself, I loved this performance. Billy picked really good but some of Tommy's runs were more advanced, both technically and stylistically. Tommy had a great mix of bluegrass, jazz, open harmonics etc. (comes with experience I guess). I can't wait for Billy to add these styles to his playing. I know he will and it's going to be great.
yes Tommy has a sophistication which comes from experience. I assume Billy will get there, he has the chops and the mentality for it. Remember, Tony Rice was a more or less straight (superb) bluegrass picker before he studied with John Carlini! Mastery is a process
As an overthinker myself, I really hate when I put together a cogent, detailed, and most importantly, inarquably correct statement, and then get told I'm overthinking it. I mean, how much thought did it take to zing in that critique of my 'masterpiece'? Wait, I think I just overthought that comment about overthinking....
I saw someone say that Billy was giving Tommy a run for his money. But look at Billy's face. He's in the moment, playing with all he's got and loving it. Tommy is right there with him and they're both improvising like crazy. This was an awesome performance by two greats. With Billy being so young, that is just awesome.
Anyone who plays guitar knows how crazy good these two can play. I could get maybe 1/4 through this, and only if I could play it at "half speed". Whew.
Wow! Makes life worth living! These guys are obviously enjoying the hell out of playing together. Turn off the politics.and just listen to these two exceptional artists. Puts a smile on your face!!
For some this would almost count as shredding and yet throughout there is 100% melody which makes all the difference. Stunning - love the eye-to-eye communication between them.
They probably rehearsed this very minimally. They are for the most part doing an improv following the structure of Tommy's "Guitar Boogie". Those looks they are giving each other are Tommy guiding him through the whole thing. Billy is just pretty much going off the whim.
Wow , these two go together like white and rice , unbelievable , I meean that's fast , and their just making up the leads as they go along , and still they manage to come back together no matter what the change , in sync or what? sick.
I first heard this song back in the early 1950's, but it sure wasn't played at this caliber of talent!. My old man could play guitar, but he would have just sat back in awe at these two playing!
You can't have a name like Billy Strings without backin' that shit up on an axe. I think Tommy could give Billy the CGP moniker. The only one fitting to, really.
@@Dreama40 Tired of listening to people like you with the one-up-man-ship. They are both great. Try watching "Wings Of Pegasus" on UA-cam--- he has done a lot of videos on great guitarists including these two.
First thing that came to my mind when i heard Billy Strings was that i would like to hear him play with Tommy. I am so happy that i can hear and watch this, so amazing! Accoustic guitar legned and acoustic guitar prodigy!
I think Billy Strings facial expressions are hilarious when he does them doing a semi solo and looking at the guy when he isn’t looking. He’s got talent tho.
I can't tell who gets the throne in your analogy. I think you're saying Billy's performance was better because it was more melodic to you but to me it was accessible, familiar & inside-the-box (brilliantly executed) where Tommy attacks it with a creative edge that steps outside the box melodically and rhythmically. I'm no musical expert so it's magic to me. The two together were really complimentary. I agree it was an awesome jam.
@@bradleysherman7513 OMG. I just watched this video again with Rude Mood playing in the background (no sound on Guitar Boogie) They match up perfectly!
When I watch these 2 play, I'm reminded I am not a guitar player, just a guitar owner.

I was there and remember all of that... crazy how fast time flies.
Not sure if this makes me want to practice more or give up.
And that's just the way you feel when you know you've seen something amazing.
this makes me want to practice, then after 30 minutes of not getting anywhere closer to them, i give up.
"Never give up! Never surrender!" - Buzz Light-year ... Also these guys practice all the time and never gave up so u can totally do it too!

Man I absolutely love how Billy is keeping the pressure on Tommy and challenging him. They both will never forget this for the rest of their lives.
Oh Tommy done forget it
these times
As an Australian I’m very pleased to see our own Tommy jam with such a extremely talented Billie boy ❤️
I love it when Tommy tears it up with the young ones like Billy and Molly Tuttle. He'll never grow old!
My fingers are sore just from watching.
Got blisters on my fingers just watching this
How do these guys not set fire to their guitars? That's what I want to know!
When you are playing guitar on the same stage as Tommy Emmanuel, you have officially "made it".
Amen.
Damn skippy
Molly Tuttle recently passed the Tommy Emmanuel test with flying colors. Now Billy Strings has done the same! Excellent!
Tommy seems to genuinely enjoy playing with these kids.
