  • Exploring an Eastern Orthodox (Ukrainian) Church In The Middle of a Forest
You've heard other explorers say "abandoned in the middle of nowhere", "abandoned in the middle of the woods" and "abandoned in the middle of the forest" right?
Guys, watch the drone footage at the opening of this video and you will see I am not joking when I say that this is a church found in the middle of the forest.
This is the farthest and most remote location that I have ever explored in Canada. My car bottomed out several times on the way in and any times I thought that my car wasn't going to make it.
I received a message from someone associated with this location
"It's not abandoned. It is in good condition because it's maintained by the people who still go there.
The property owner visits regularly. Not sure when this was recorded but I dusted and swept up last week when I visited 🙂
Not much to be done about the mice, unfortunately.
To settle the discussion in the comments - it's Eastern Orthodox (Ukrainian).
It was built in the early 2000s (my dad helped build it) and it is intended for religious retreats.
Although it's on private property, random people seem to visit often.
Fortunately there have been no real issues with vandalism."

It's UKRAINIAN ORTHODOX. I grew up Ukrainian Catholic in Manitoba. Lots of small church's like this in Catholic or Orthodox around the prairies. They service partitioners in the surrounding areas. Sometimes a priest is set to do mass at 3-5 churches in an area. He'd do one mass at one church one week then the next church etc. Or sometimes they'll come in from a bigger city and do mass at the church once in a while. There were probably people in that area but they all moved away or died over the years, just like what's happening in Manitobas small Ukrainian churches. Old baba's and Dido's, families all left the rural areas. Sad, but life.
This kind of reminds me of Gimli Manitoba's Ukrainian Catholic church.
Maybe they're renovating an old church. Only use this one for special religious occasions in the summer months.
    But it's definitely not abandoned!!!!

The Akathist Hymn book on the mantel was a Greek, here is a Wikipedia look up with a paragraph of Akathist ....
“An Akathist Hymn (Greek: Ἀκάθιστος Ὕμνος, "unseated hymn") is a type of hymn usually recited by Eastern Orthodox or Eastern Catholic Christians, dedicated to a saint, holy event, or one of the persons of the Holy Trinity. The name derives from the fact that during the chanting of the hymn, or sometimes the whole service, the congregation is expected to remain standing in reverence, without sitting down (ἀ-, a-, "without, not" and κάθισις, káthisis, "sitting"), except for the aged or infirm. During Eastern Catholic and Orthodox Christian religious services in general, sitting, standing, bowing and the making of prostrations are set by an intricate set of rules, as well as individual discretion. Only during readings of the Gospel and the singing of Akathists is standing considered mandatory for all.”

There are groups in Canada that restore the old churches in parries and forest founded by the first waves of immigrants who farmed and worked in those areas (my guess lumber). They have numerous Facebook groups (and they actually ask people not to post photos of the interiors of the churches so no one scopes it out to steal things). A few things: traditional Byzantine churches, both Orthodox and Catholic, don’t have pews or chairs, apart from maybe along the wall, only to be used by the infirm who need it.
Also, while you obviously did so in ignorance, it is actually sacrilegious for you to have gone through the middle doors into the sanctuary (called the Royal Doors), as only ordained clergy (deacons, priests, bishops) enter through them, and only they stand in the space between the altar and doors. The two doors on the side, commonly known as the “deacons doors”, are for non-clergy (and, the deacons, as they only enter the Royal Doors when carrying either the gospel book or Eucharist).
Also, the upstairs room with only the carpet may be a makeshift poustinia.

Based on books, I'm leaning towards Ukranian, Slovak, or Russian Catholic chapel.
The left most icon in the iconostasis is Our Lady of the Inexhaustible Cup, again leaning towards Eastern Catholic. I'm going to share video to an Eastern Catholic priest who lived in Canada for several years and may be able to help solve the mystery.

What you will find in Canada, is that the majority of Ukrainians outside of the post USSR live in Canada, and just like in allot of places in America, the turn of the century and up until the Second World War the majority of “Russians” were from what is today the Ukraine, so even some of the old Russian Orthodox churches are Ukrainians (politics, political identity, similar cultures, same orthodoxy).

The art is what is know as eastern ortodox . I saw more than one lang. in the books . My guess would be that people form a number of Eastern Europeain countries used the church at one time . Maby it had a good road that got removed .

Could be a Ukrainian Catholic or Ukrainian Orthodox church (Ukrainian Catholics as well as other eastern Catholics tend to celebrate the Byzantine liturgy, same with the orthodox Christian’s). Eastern Catholic Churches and orthodox churches tend to look the same (cause they Basicly are the same just under jurisdiction of the pope and apart of the Catholic Church instead of the Orthodox Church, could be political reasons or dogmatic reasons)

As people are saying, some sort of eastern Orthodox. But there have to be mechanicals somewhere, basement? or it would be in much worse shape. Looks like a retreat center to me, and has to be in use, because the chalice is still there. It would have been removed by the church if not.

If you “don’t do church, or anything religious”, how about you avoid trespassing in sanctuaries, walking into all the rooms, and even walk behind the altar? Please don’t “touch” things that are sacred to others. I quickly understood that you were really not educated about Christianity upon hearing your comments while taking your “private tour” into the church. Please have a sense of decency and respect. I’d you’re unsure and you clearly see that you’ve entered a sacred space, just admire it for what it is, and don’t go roaming behind altars, or go up the stairs of the building as if it was your own.
    Thank you.

You should have not gone in the alter, that is still a holy place, as a non baptized orthodox Christian, you usually aren’t allowed to enter the alter without permission, especially the way you did it. Only clergy passes through the main entrance to the alter, and only clergy touch the alter table, you conducted yourself poorly. It’s gods house so in a way I don’t think you are trespassing but you have no grace, you don’t go to someone else’s house and walk right up stairs and start putting on their clothes or jumping on their bed……

I wonder, if it's Northern Ontario (there are about 25 in Ontario, more in Sask etc) if it is a Doukhobour Church. Per Wikipedia - The Doukhobours or Dukhobors (Dukhobory, also Dukhobortsy, Russian: Духоборцы; literally "Spirit-Warriors / Wrestlers")[1][2][3] are a Spiritual Christian religious group of Russian origin. They are one of many non-Orthodox ethno-confessional faiths in Russia, often categorized as "folk-Protestants", Spiritual Christians, sectarians, or heretics. They are distinguished as pacifists who lived in their own villages, rejected personal materialism, worked together, and developed a tradition of oral history and memorizing and singing hymns and verses. Before 1886, they had a series of single leaders. The origin of the Doukhobors is uncertain. The first written records of them are from 1701, although some scholars suspect earlier origins.[4]
They reject the Russian Orthodox priesthood, the use of icons, and all associated church ritual. Doukhobors came to believe that the Bible alone was not enough to reach divine revelation,[5] and that doctrinal conflicts can interfere with their faith. Their goal was to internalize the living spirit of God so that God's spirit would be revealed within each individual. Biblical teachings are evident in some published Doukhobor psalms, hymns, and beliefs. The Doukhobors traditionally ate bread and borscht.[6][7] Some of their food-related religious symbols were bread, salt and water.[8]
Can continue reading about them on Doukhobors - Wikipedia.
