Swahili Lyrics:
Baba yetu, Yetu uliye
Mbinguni yetu, Yetu amina!
Baba yetu Yetu uliye
M jina lako e litukuzwe.
Utupe leo chakula chetu
Tunachohitaji utusamehe
Makosa yetu, hey!
Kama nasi tunavyowasamehe
Waliotukosea usitutie
Katika majaribu, lakini
Utuokoe, na yule, muovu e milele!
Ufalme wako ufike utakalo
Lifanyike duniani kama mbinguni. Amina.

My Best Video: "How Great Thou Art - Peter Hollens feat. The All-American Boys Chorus"
• Video
~-~~-~~~-~~-~
You have to appreciate the effort this must have taken. Two people sung a song made for a choir and its in a language neither are native to.
the pronunciation is even top notch - though they are both in a choir known for interpreting African hymns if I recall correctly
I don't think anyone who watches and knows the story behind the song actually questions the abilitiy of the two singers at hand.
Spot on...
The only video game song to ever win a grammy. and in all honesty, it deserves it.
Hey just checking again, there's a new nomination this year
@@jfp0763 make that a winner

Shame Malukah's version of 'A dragonborn comes' from Skyrim never won anything, it was an absolute masterpiece
Civilization IV Theme "Baba Yetu" done by 150 voices and some percussion. I finally was able to work with the phenomenal *****
Phenomenal! Most fave piece of music from a computer game ever! Wonderful sir! :D
Great work *****. I'm always impressed with your vocal work. Even if I don't like the subject matter I often find myself amazed by your voice. Keep up the awesome work friend.
Edit: ***** Your voice is pretty great too. :)
Hey, sometime in the future you and someone else should sing "Life is a happy song" from the Muppets
Galentw I love the idea of them doing some muppet songs.
I remembered playing this on the computer and just sitting there just o listen to this song thanks for the memories Peter.
Please please Peter, never take this song down. This is absolutely fabulous version of Baba Yetu that brings so much joy to people around the world.
Why would he take it down?
You should probably obtain local copies for offline enjoyment as well.
Don't you just love it when you click on a song, don't know what to expect. And suddenly you have been sitting trough the whole song with a smile plastered on your face. Amazing piece guys! Thank you for making my day so much brighter and continue to rock on! :D
Shrinkhead13 Ohhh I love that too! Have a great rest of your summer to go along with that day
So true!
This song is the lord's prayer done in swahili . I love Hollens version. Proud to be from a Swahili speaking nation.
your language is beautiful
Same here.... Si i'm glad I stumbled onto this song...

Makes me look forward even more to learning Swahili in heaven with my brothers & sisters in Christ - beautiful
naomi wanjiku kamau how is their pronunciation?
I'm from Kenya so I speak swahili, im a huge fan. This makes me so happy.
+Patricia Kamara You must have been so impressed with them, especially their diction....
+Patricia Kamara What can you say about their pronunciation?
Pretty damn good.
+Patricia Kamara So so good..... :-) Wamefanya vyema kabisa.... :-) They deserve a 100% grading! Wow! Malika's diction is completely amazing....I am sure the Kenyans and Tanzanians would think she is one of them...
Then you must have understood that it's just the Lord's Prayer to music
I just sang this at my summer camp last week and I loved it so much. The camp is over now and I’m crying while listening to this. My school also sang this the year before I went up to the high school. The singers all graduated and the teacher retired.
When I first heard this in my native language (swahili) I couldnt believe it! Beautiful piece of music and definately deserved the grammy win
Uhuh! Agreed!
Completely agree
+Nick Ng Swahil is a beautiful language for song, the song wouldn't sound nearly as good in any other.
+Nick Ng may you please send lyrics for this song please since you just said its in your language i really need it
+Finalcord Volen the artist chooses the language his songs are in as he would choose any other instrument in it. Get Calling All Dawns. Christopher Tin is a genius, the entire thing is just as good.
You really put effort into the accent I give you props - a Swahili speaker
I've always been curious about that. Glad to hear the accent is actually done well! I can't tell, since I don't speak the language.
is it effort or is it actually good? lmao
Raven it's good
May, I say, sir, your language is one of the most beautiful things on this earth. This is coming from a multilingual linguistics student.
Hello good day, just want to clarify with the pronunciation of "tu" in "yetu".. most videos in youtube pronounced it or sound like a "tshu or choo", is it accurate? or is it pronounced as a hard T like "tour"? It bothers me everytime I hear it. My choral group is planning to sing another arrangement and we tend to master it with accuracy from accent down to pronunciation. Thanks
wooow my swahili language from kenya ,so marvelous.

Vielen Dank für den Text!
Thank you so much for this! I pronounced the words unfamiliar to me again and again until I (think I) got it right.
I have a few questions about some parts that seem different?
1. The text says: "Utuokoe na yule, MILELE NA milele," but in 0:42, it sounds like "UWOMUWE milele".
2. The text says: "Utuokoe na yule, MSIBA milele". But in 2:47, it sounds like "MUOMOWE milele".
Listening to this in 2023, love this. May god bless y'all 🙏🏼 Love from Germany ❤
I'm a Cali girl who has grown up in Tanzania. This is the sound of my home. Thank you so much for sharing your version of this song. It was absolutely incredible
I read that totally wrong. I thought it said ”call girl” haha. They say we go blind on the eyes first.
Watching her smile made me unconsciously smile :)
She does have a very quiet, pleasant smile. Even while singing.
i know gollum is schizo... u are the good or bad one?
The good one :)
Pathetic lmao
Such a beautiful song; how how horrible it is to watch it all crumble along with your civilization because of that... abomination... that heartless... cruel... monster... Montezuma...
Or when Ghandi get's weirdly aggressive.
Spiffleh
Watch out, Ghandi just dropped the A-Bomb!
Spiffleh Ghandi was only an angry warlord in 5, not 4.
SuperHamsterhuey Not as a rule no. But I had games of Civ IV where he was inexplicably angry and aggressive. .... and then there is randomizing the leader personalities.
Spiffleh Yes, but in civ 4, just about anyone could be an angry rampaging warlord, but Monty did it the most often. Shaka and Genghis came close.
Doesn't matter how many times I hear this song, either this rendition, Alex Boye's one, or the original, still brings a smile to my face and a tingle down my back. Beautiful song no matter one's beliefs.
You're an Elite Dangerous player?
While I know this song is a prayer and I'm an Atheist I still ADORE this song. It makes me smile every time I hear it.
Wow my Swahili language 🇹🇿.... Baba yetu uliye-mbinguni
Bwana asifiwe!
It's stuck in my head because of Civilization IV, and every time I play Civilization V I think about how great is this song and Civilization IV
Welcome, civ VI
same. honestly, this should be an option for title music in Civ VI.
+Bmobmo64 Christopher Tin is composing the music for Civ VI.
Agreed. The music in Civ IV was some of the best music I've ever heard in a game. Playing Civ V always leaves me with wanting the Civ IV music.
@magney This makes me soooooo happy
This really goes to prove that you do not have to understand a word of a song to enjoy it deeply. Music speaks to your soul.
🙋🏽♀️ Yes, indeed.😀👍🏽
It is said in India that music may not save your soul. But it makes your soul worth saving.
Malukha always look like the kind of person you'd like to invite over for tea and a nice mellow conversation.
And then maybe persuade her into singing.
As a Swahili speaker I msut say I am impressed. Your accents are on point. We need to make this our daily prayer. Baraka Tele (blessings) from Kenya.

I can't believe that this is the Lord's Prayer in swahili. It's so angelical and peaceful...

This is a fantastic rendition of this song. I personally spent 2 years in Kenya and Tanzanian and speak this language (Swahili) fluently. Not only is this very musically pleasing, but it legitimately sounds Africanized. Also your pronunciation is stellar. well done!
Absolutely incredible voices. I am a 19 year old full time college student athlete suffering from chronic cardiovascular issues, I am unsure of when I may be on life support. Your music has brought me joy in some of the darkest times. I never know when the pain will stop, but I have your music to listen to! This music is the best you've ever made

If you like this song did you check out the Christopher Tim performance
I had a heart attack. I listen to this and my heart rate goes down. Thinking of you.
Gosh I’m so sorry to hear this, I can feel the emotion behind your words. My parents both died of cardiovascular disease and I can sense my system getting worse with time.. But there is an eternity with God that can await us, this short little life is but a fleeting moment! God desires no one to perish but all to come to a saving knowledge of him 😌. I think you’ll resonate but if you wish to chat further feel free. God bless!

I first started to learn this song for choir class, and one day, my teacher being the awesome woman that she is, found this video and showed it to the class. A few weeks later, after finding it, I watched this video almost ritualistically each morning until the concerf, and our choir didn't even come close to how amazing your production here is
Amazing job an thank you for a spectacular recording of this song.
When you guys started singing i almost burst in tears
I have no idea why

Weebo is a reference to those obsessed with Japanese culture, this is sung in Swahili. Your term doesn't match up.
Andrew Bondarenko ok
I consciously admit that this is the most beautiful song on Earth. It gives you so much positive energy and will to live that it's almost unbelievable that it was created by humans. That is how I imagine power of Holy Spirit.
The song is beautiful, the voices are beautiful, the editing is beautiful. Masterpiece.
I remember singing this song with a choir. I loved it. I always felt so happy and calmed singing it. I am very happy you covered it.
Me too!!
By far the best non English version of the Lord's Prayer I have ever heard. Swahili is such a rich language.
I know this video is 7 years old, but this is absolutely fantastic. The visceral sound of percussion with voices alone is moving. And seeing that this is the Lord's prayer in Swahili makes it more fantastic. Thank you for putting this up!
Christopher Tin did the original, it's far better in my opinion
This one just feels like parasite yanno
Yes! Me too. I love this song so much, but I never knew what language it was in or anything. Just heard it and loved it!
It doesn't matter how old a song is, as long as it's good... it will last for years :)
My entire school choir sang this last year for my senior year. It has such and impact when the entire stage is full of people, singers lining the aisles and all of us singing. Its something that you don't get other than live, even though this is a close second.
I'm not religious but that song is the best...
Malukah consistently amazes me with her ability to sing in other languages. A native Spanish speaker who can sing in Spanish, English, Swahili, and even DOVAH from Skyrim.
Today I learned I am no joke doing this for my choir. After over 4 years, I knew I had to come back. Thank you for being a prophet, Peter Hollens.
-how introvert are you?
=We made an entire choir just the two of us.
A lot of Peter's stuff is done solo, sometimes with nearly as many voices.
Still 2 people.
Both my wifes's church choir (Wesley-Knox United Church, London, Ontario) and concert choir (the Karen Schuessler Singers) have sung this many times with a tenor chorister that has the Swahili down pat. It never fails to move people. The most surprising time I ever heard it was at the fountains beneath the world's tallest manmade structure, the Burj Khalifa in Dubia. I always wonder if the mostly Muslim audience was aware of what it was. Whatever, this rendition is amazing. I expect it took many takes to create the effect of a large choir. So wonderful. Kudos to all. H
Two of my favorite human begins on the planet performing the music of a third. Such love for you malufenix , ***** and Christopher Tin. Beautifully done! -Austin
Austin, you always know JUST how to say the nicest things. You are amazing too man, don't forget, ha
The sad part is....i have now watchend over 100 versions of Baba Yetu - no joke - performed by choirs all around the world. And this is the goddamn only version that
- doesnt sound like crap
- has no problem with the audio recording
- doesnt feature audience applauding or screaming midst performance
- only features "typical" instruments like no piano, no e guitar etc.
- features 2 genders singing
I tried to find a version with a choir but it seems you 2 did the best version that exists on this planet. And this was the version i started with...could have told me that i wont find any better.
I had the same experience. heard it here first and went looking for other versions. Should not have bothered. Hard to improve on perfection!
+Orkar Isber (Estar) If you can get the original done by Christopher Tin in a lossless format (like I do) and have good speakers, then THAT also sounds heavenly. Speaking of which...
+Orkar Isber (Estar) Christopher Tins original version with the Civ 4 music video.

I love this song and I so agree with what u say
And all this time when playing Civilization IV I have been listening to our Father being praised and I had no idea! Praise God and his son our Lord Jesus Christ!
You can enjoy this song even if you are an atheist and don't understand the lyrics. Glory to mankind!

I got a story for you all: Back when I was in high school, during junior year as I recall, the school band was holding its annual concert in a few months. The music had no real theme, but one was Baba Yetu. As usual, they needed the official go ahead to make sure that they didn't suffer from copyright infringement. (It happened while I was in middle school, so I don't know the details.)
So they called up Christopher Tin directly (don't know how) and he said that we could only do the song if HE conducted the song. The school agreed and we got to see him LIVE! I only watch the concert, but my friend, who was in the band at the time says that he's an awesome and nice guy.
That is AWESOME! Good for your friend to be part of that experience and I hope you enjoyed seeing Chris lead the band in your school! :D

3 years later I am compelled to listen to this every time I run across it. What a wonderful rendition of a spiritually edifying piece.
Well, I've never heard the anthem of Earth before. It ain't bad.
Joseph Pettit the Lord's Prayer in Swahili... the anthem of earth? sure, that works
I mean if this was the world anthem it would kinda imply we are all a heavily religious race.
Tree Turtle at one point we were all religious in one form or another... Atheism is a recent development.
Speaking more to Christianity as a religion. Christianity was the first successful religion to (initially and in ideal practice) declare all nations and people equal and of equal worth. It is the believer's inability to get past his own culture that has marred it into a 'Western' religion, when it reality it was never meant to be so. While it does not treat all faiths and all actions with equality, Christianity declares that one God made all and all are equal before that God (Israel was a 'chosen' nation, but this was not unique as most religions were also regional/cultural in nature.) They did not state that your nation/city-state neighbors, whom you are probably trying to kill and conquer, are just as 'human' and 'worthy' as yourself.
I don't deny we used to be but many aren't anymore so the claim that it gives the wrong impression is still valid.
Atheism's actually older than you think. There were atheistic philosophers back in ancient Greece over two thousand years ago, for instance. Religiosity's been more dominant and it was usually rather dangerous or at least ill-advised to be openly atheist for much of human history but it's not as new as you'd think. Just more accepted.
OUR FATHER, JUST MAKES YOU WANT TO SMILE...... LUV IT!!!!!
this makes me happy. new civ comes out in 1 hour! BABA YEEEEEETUUUUU!!!!

(Amina) (Amen)
When malukah sings is just so beautiful...
This never gets old. Still blows my mind how you 2 sound like a full blown choir. Thank you.
I shared this with my Swahili friends in Kenya--they were amazed at their language being sung in such a beautiful way! Absolutely beautiful!!
I hereby nominate this song to be the Planetary Anthem of Earth.
***** It wouldn't exclude anyone but atheists and possibly some deists who don't believe in an active God, so they don't believe in the efficacy prayer. The words of the "Lord's Prayer" aren't explicitly Christian, it was just originally prayed by Christ.
Emily Jacobson And the Hindus, and Buddhists, and Taoists, and Jains, and Zoroastrians, and pagans, and animists... Atheist, Abrahamic, and deist are not an exhaustive list of religious affiliations of the population of Earth by any stretch of the imagination. Aside from the fact that the lyrics very broadly represent only a subset of Earth culture, they say very little about us, and what little it might say seems unflattering to me.

OK, so Baba Yetu might be a mad choice simply because the lyrics doesn't describe us.
But can we keep the language of the anthem as Swahili? 'Cause it sounds boss.
Heh well many foreign languages sound pretty amazing as lyrics, especially when you don't understand them. I'm also fond of Sanskrit.
Arkalius80 I find it strange that one claiming to be fond of Sanskrit wouldn't know better than to claim those adhering to Vedic religions would have a problem with this song. Brahma, Prajapati, Krshna... any of this ringing a bell yet? You're also wrong about Zoroastrians. Their religion is the closest to the Abrahamic religions outside the group itself.
im pretty sure 2 million of the views are me watching this fucking over and over
+bzeljn yup
Hahahahahaha......
Me too. Such beautiful music.
Hmm....
3:30 is the length of the song.
That is 210 seconds.
210*2,000,000 = 420000000 sec
420000000/60 = 7000000 min
7000000/60 = 116666.666667 hours
116666.666667/24 = 4861.11111111 days
4861.11111111/365.25 = 13.3089968819 years
you, sir, are either a timetraveller. Or a liar. Wanna believe in the first one though. How is 2027? :P
well if he is looking it 40-50 times a day ?
I love this! Great job once again man, keep them coming!
Looking forward to your album!!
Being a Kenyan citizen I really appreciate the efforts put on this song ,bearing the fact that they didn't understand it,its the Lord's prayer in Swahili
This is the first time while watching a youtube video that I actually wanted to leave more than one like... omg such a great performance
Your voices mesh so well together. Would love to see another collaboration with you and Malukah.
I am amazed by how beautiful this language is.
I saw my friend sing this in a choir concert and he was just in love with this song. I played this for him and he nearly cried. Said this got to him deep in his soul for some reason.
It's not often I see someone touched by a song and this song always does.
No way you did this song!!! I'm doing this for choir!!! I got all the solos
Wow, congrats! You must have an amazing voice to get all the solos. I hope you have fun and enjoy singing it. 😊
No words... seriously that was amazingly beautiful
Is this heaven.. hello? God ?
I'm pretty sure he asked because the song is so beautiful lol.
Sure... I want a hamburger, a big package of Chips and a little drink.
Can I pay with unicorn chocolate?
Probably this is played in elevator to the Heaven.
Beep; God is not at home at the moment. You may leave a message after the beep. BEEEEEEP.
We sang this song in my freshman year of high school. I just graduated this past year and listening to this made me tear up with memories from choir as I sang along... Thank you both
