Flashing Police Lights - Model Railroad Scenery

- Here I demonstrate a very simple method of adding flashing lights to a HO scale police car. It’s amazing what a couple of small flashing LEDs can do to bring a scene to life!
This technique can be used not only for your model railroad to add a police scene but if you model small dioramas or even war gaming terrain, adding flashing lights like this can greatly improve the scenery.
The method is very simple and made even easier with the Woodland Scenics Just Plug light system although using a battery or old phone charger can give similar results.
I don't even don't even make model scenery. Your videos are just so damn relaxing, I could watch them all day.
lol, thanks so much for watching :)

I dont even dont even lol
I'm gonna go get the papers get the papers.
I just came across this video even though I've been following for quite a while. It popped up in my feed. What caught my attention immediately was the Idaho State Police car! My home!! I'm working on a diorama just like this, so the timing of finding this is simply perfect! Thank you for your tutorials!
Talented, passionate, well filmed, great editing and amazing results; what's not to like?
I have no intention of making dioramas myself, but I made some stuff for D&D and Warhammer 40K some years ago and I can appreciate the art, time and effort that goes into this sort of stuff.
Sub'd
Indeed, watching how you did the whole thing has been interesting enough.
😀 Thank you.
Great videos! I want the lit effect but prefer the appearance of the rectangular "light bar" on top of my police cars. Do you think I could use your technique to install the LEDs underneath the plastic "lights", so that they'd shine through?
Nice tutorial this is very helpful for my new project. Thank you
Thank you :)
Another fantastic how too. Thank you.
Thanks Peter :) I might do some more videos adding lights and details.
Cheers
Luke
I think this and your othervvids are amazing
Always enjoyable, Rob
Thanks Rob, there are a couple of things I'd change in the future but for the basic effect this works quite well.
Cheers
Luke
Very nice 👍🏼
Good 👍 tips.
This guy is a genius, great skills and his english is so clear and easily understandable. Finally someone is not screaming and shouting in his own youtube videos for attention. He does that with his great skills. I am learning a lot here, thanks a lot!
thanks so much for an amazing comment, I truly appreciate you watching and enjoying the videos. It's great to know they are appreciated.
Thanks again 😊
Cheers
Luke
Luke Towan my pleasure Luke. You deserve it! I might come to you for ideas, just switches from h0 to N and I am about to start to build something with it. :) have a great week! 😁
The way he goes the extra mile to make his scale models look realistic blows me away.
You should make a Michael Myers scene for Halloween
Love your vids!!, keep it up!!
Thanks mate 😃
yes but why is there a cop sitting outside this house? Who was murdered?
lol, maybe the cop is single and he rushed over to see his girlfriend after work... He put the sirens on to get there quicker! But forgot to turn them off in his haste to get out of the car!
I say he was responding to as complaint about a barking dog and is just finishing up the paperwork. Safety suggests he keep the flashing lights illuminated so he doesn't get hit by a teenager using a cell phone.
No murder, he was screwing the neighbor's goat!
Nice work Luke, the flashing lights do make a big difference, a friend and myself did this with O scale cars and trucks however using the very small led's, these are much harder to work with because of their smaller size, anyway, great work as usual my friend.
thanks mate, I think next time I'll try using the smaller LEDs, it would give a much better overall effect and probably look more realistic!
Cheers
Luke
I live in the state of Idaho. Nice build, I've seen that car behind me a few times. I critique, the trooper wasn't fat enough :)
Nice one!
Cheers Michael :)
Very cool keep up the videos
this is sick man, as always u nailed it this is damn cool idea. thumbs up for this one
Thanks mate, it's very easy to do and can be easily modified if you want them to look a little better.
Cheers
Luke
bruh now I want to make a diorama cop chase
if you use smd leds you could possibly put them in the thing on top
dang Idaho State Police car lol, I deal with those guys every day living here and driving a truck
Holy crap finally
Could you do a working ho scale model train. With a red and blue light bar. That Would be cool
I wonder if you could make a light bar using a small piece of printed circuit board and a SLA 3D printer....
why Idaho police? Why not a local force from where you are? Great videos, very enjoyable.
Maybe Luke is a spud lover.
Probably because it's harder to get australian police cars, plus they never had any Dodge Monaco.
@@doubledarefan most of the US' potatoes come from WA
I wondered the same thing

A very helpful tutorial. Thank you. I assume that the theory of lighting installation is the same for al other road vehicles. I do have one question though, how did you get the lights to flash like that?
you can get LED's that are flashing . . . .
I think thats What Luke used. Something like this perhaps: lighthouseleds.com/led-component-lighting/animated-leds-flashing-blinking/3mm-led-flashing-round-top.html
Thanks Luke, Philip was right, I used flashing LEDs. They automatically flash red and blue any time power is applied to them. They are very simple to use and you can use the same technique on any vehicle that you want flashing lights. you can get all sorts of colors.
Hope that helps.
Cheers
Luke
Another good video, but using led's like this dates the vehicle being used. So now off to Evilbay to see if there's any led light bars I can use in 1/32nd or 1/36th scale.
yeah good point, I have been getting into Arduino and I'm going to be working on doing animated lights using micro LEDs which should look much more realistic.
Checked Evilbay and while they have light bars, they're each the same color. But then just found this web site selling Pico size led's. Hope it helps you & others.www.etsy.com/listing/78996400/tiny-led-light-set-for-miniature
This is so cooool
Luke - a great series on scenic techniques, very well presented. But now I'm confused - is BCRR an Australian interpretation of an American prototype or is it meant to be thoroughly Australian? In this, and several other videos, you have detailed some vehicles retaining left hand drive - is LHD still illegal in Australia?
That is very cool! I like how you did that. too bad you couldn't get an LED to fit in the original light bar that was already on the car.
Thanks mate, yeah next time I do this I'll use the micro LEDs and try fixing them to the existing light bar, it would look much better I'm sure!
Cheers
Luke
cool
Thanks :)
Now i can set up my full scale bank robbery! YAASSS!
Superb. Thanks heaps Luke. Do you fly to Tassie?
Great video.
You mentioned that you soldered the LEDs in series. How were you able to get them to flash independently?
The same question I would like to ask. Great tutorial, by the way. Thanks, Luke
nice
I am new to wiring and electronics but I am confused how you wired to red and blue leds in series but yet they have some sort of delay and help anyone?
Just a note from my own experience: Always check that the led's work before you glue them on :)
Good point... That has got me before in the past!!!
Cheers
Luke
Where did you get the LEDs for the flashing lights?
For more of the Idaho State police look up MST3K. Last clear chance. You'll thank me later
How did you work in the flashing effect of the LEDs?
Ток нужно было светодиоды подпилить и надеть оригинальную мигалку сверху, было бы еще круче!
thanks for the fantastic tip, I didn't think of that but next time I'll definitely try that!
Cheers
Luke
Why is it that whenever my state is mentioned, it's always in the place I lease expect it?
Wut do I need make sumting like this?
dude i live in idaho too
is there a way to make diy crime scene tape. that would be amazing if you can make a video with that!
I've had a couple of thoughts about trying this! I haven't got any ideas just yet but I did consider printing the tape onto thin printer paper and cutting it into small strips???
Still have to do some experimenting though!
Cheers
Luke
+Luke Towan are you contactable through skype so i can show you some of my ideas
wouldn't it have been easier to use small rgb leds?
these LED's are bipolar ? + - = red - + = blue ??
What size miniature do you use in your dioramas?
Could you tell me about scale of human model you use?
Hi, they are HO scale which is 1:87th scale.
Cheers
Luke
What size LED do you think would work best on a NSW level crossing signal?
I would probably try starting with the smallest LED's first. I think a crossing signal would look good with a 3mm LED or even a 1.8mm LED. But if it was me I'd use a 3mm one.
Cheers
Luke
Cheers Luke. I'l use 3mm LEDs
What is the song used in the beginning
It's call 'Hero Theme' and it's free to download and use from the UA-cam audio library. 😊
thank you
Hey, +Luke Towan, if I were you, I would learn to do like +Rivet Counter does with this vehicles and implement his techniques into your vehicle. Trust me, you would love to see his videos.
what the first song?
I feel sad fore the cop cant drive away ☹️
You don't connect the positive of one led to the negative and say it is wired in a series. That does not sound right at all.
Thanks for the comment Dennis, from what I can understand from the comment, to connect the LED's in series they are basically daisy chained together connecting the positive of one LED to the negative of the next LED and so on. A quick google search for LED's connected in series should show you some images of what it was that I was demonstrating in the video.
Cheers :)
actually he does, and that is what it is called, if it was positive to positive and negative to negative they would be in parallel...
musicbasedrum same here
i know how to do that
lol, thanks for watching :)
make a car pold over
101th
ha ha ha 😀
*goes to a mansion in Idaho and sees a police car floating*
OMG
Freaking amazing, The possibilities are endless, A++
Thanks :) it's all about planting the seed :) there is so much you could do with these LED's.
Cheers
Luke
I was surprised to see my home state's police! I've been really wanting to get back into diorama making. I might have to! Thanks for the tutorial!
You welcome 😃
Lol clicked on vid cause I saw the Idaho state police logo, we don't get much attention
I've tried to do this 10 times, it NEVER works, what am I doing wrong? 2x L.E.D (1 positive leg to negative on other) then soldered two lengths of wire to 3v battery including a resistor in line on live feed. Nothing happens. Both LED are working after testing individually
Another great tutorial. Scott
Thanks Scott :)
Nicely made video, succinct and easy to follow. Cool. Laurie.
Thanks Laurie, glad you enjoyed it :)
Cheers
Luke
where do you find this cars?
Do you also build complete dioramas apart from the seperated sceneries?
yeah, I have a few different videos on my channel showing how to build complete dioramas. I have a playlist called 'Realistic Scenery Series' you can check it out here:

Luke😊
Hey... that's where I live, pretty cool!
You live in a miniature....?
Quick tip, sand down the top of the led lens
what if you wanted it to drive with the lights on?
4:43 that cop car has idaho on it and thats where i live
How I make lights Siku? I have Siku BMW 520 police
what scale is it?
Wait...whats the name of the instrumental song in the beginning?
That us a really neat idea, have to do a fire engine and an ambulance next 😁
Hi Luke. Nice tutorial. As usual. Thanks ! Could you write where these two color flashing LED are available, please?
Hi mate, I go them from a train exhibition and have no idea who the seller was! Although if you try ebay I think you should find a few sellers.... probably from china? Like most electronics, but I buy plenty of stuff from there, only problem is shipping usually takes a while.
Hey Luke, you can file and polish an LED to get specific profiles or to fit them inside something.
I've not really tried that but from what a few people have been saying is that yes it would actually look much better if I filed the led's to get a better shape. I guess you'd just have to avoid filing too much to avoid going all the way to the filament!
I'll give it a shot next time.
Cheers
Luke
another ace tutorial luke check out shedring railways mate they do some good stuff with lights in models
Thanks mate, I'll have to go check them out :)
Cheers
Luke
I absolutely love all of your videos!
Hey Luke, Nice build! I had my hands up over my head right away. I'm a little late getting to watch this one, as a construction crew took out my phone and internet last Friday morning with a motor grader. I just now got it fixed and am trying to catch up. Great job as always! Cheers, Dan.
Thanks Dan, I know just how you feel, we had the internet out for just a few days earlier this year! It's amazing how much we rely on the internet to get stuff done! Glad you've been enjoying the videos :)
Cheers
Luke
Very informative. Thanks for sharing.
No worries :) thanks for watching.
Cheers
Luke
Would be good if there was a way to add a small battery inside the car so you could move it without the weirs being in one spot.
totally! That's something I'm actually trying to work on... Planning on filming a tutorial showing headlights, taillights and blinkers as well 😀
oh wow that would be nice.
hi can these be hooked up to a bus wire on a layout
yeah certainly 😊 That's what I plan to do with this
