Coming Home to El Salvador - Salvadoran Perspectives Part 3

  • Since moving to El Salvador, we've met so many Salvadoreños who've made the choice to come home to their country of birth. In a previous era, the flow of people was from El Salvador to the United States and elsewhere, but today more and more people are coming home to rediscover their heritage, their culture, their families, and their roots.
    In the third instalment of our Salvadoran Perspectives series, we bring Regina's story of returning to El Salvador after 47 years of life abroad.

    Thank you for sharing your story Regina. It is very similiar to my wife's. She fled the civil war in 1985 at 17 years old and only visited a handful of times over the decades because of the security situation but thanks to the recent miraculous turn of events, she decided she wanted to return. We made a couple of visits and quickly realized we wanted to retire there. So, we purchased a home last year in playa san diego, la libertad, which is still under renovation and plan on relocating there when its done by this fall. Muchas gracias presidente Bukele. Que Dios le bendiga!

      25 years in the United States and you never bothered to learn English? No - it is doubtful you will be allowed to return to the US. Especially after 25 years, not paying any income tax, you owe the US tends of thousands in unpaid back taxes, and under the new reclamation law you owe El Salvador taxes too. El Salvador will not process your passport request without proof that you have paid your US income taxes, you will be denied a Salvadoran passport. Since you have 25 years of freeloading and unpaid US taxes that probably will not happen. Life has responsibilities - it is sad you refuse to obey them.

I am seriously thinking about moving back, or staying 3 months out of the year, I also like to travel to other countries, but mom left a little home in el Puerto La Libertad, I have a hard time leaving when I go visit. Most I have stayed is 3 weeks. When I retire I want to try 3 months first and see how I feel. Most important contribute to my people somehow. Thank you for your videos!

    The relationship between the US and SV is changing in the coming year when it comes to taxes. Because so many Salvadorans live illegally in the US, so they do not pay US income taxes nor are they paying SV income taxes, the SV government will be cracking down on Salvadorans who live and work illegally in other countries. The SV government will be demanding a copy of your US income tax return for all Salvadorans living in the US in order to process SV income taxes, additionally SV consulates will not be renewing the passports of Salvadorans who are unable to show they have paid both the US and SV taxes by providing tax returns. Since any individual can obtain a tax id number from the IRS, there will be no exceptions to anh Salvadoran national living in the US being unable to provide a completed and paid US tax return. The US tax return will be used to calculate the tax liability for Salvadoran nationals living in the US.
    Of course if most Salvadorans had ever learned the duty of social responsibility these efforts by the Bukele administration would not be needed. Unfortunately, social responsibility is not a concept that most Salvadorans are willing to accept - stealing and robbing from working Americans and other governments is. The Bukele administration is right to demand these actions - Salvadorans need to start paying taxes and stop living and steeling off the work and efforts of others. Nothing is free, and a government cannot afford to provide basic services when the population refuses to accept their own responsibilities to pay their fair share.

    • @twopeopleinparadise
      @twopeopleinparadise  Рік тому

      Fair comments.
      The Salvadoran people we've met here in El Salvador certainly understand their responsibility to their community, and refreshingly so.

    • @c.martinez516
      @c.martinez516 Рік тому

      You are so ignorant and racist. Most Salvadoran in the US are legal and most are US Citizens. Perhaps you should also learn about the civil war that United States waged and financed and forced so many Salvadoran to flee. Obviously, your are prejudiced and ignorant.

    • @cxa340
      @cxa340 Рік тому

      @@c.martinez516
      1) actually no - most Salvadoran nationals living in the US are not US citizens, more than half are living under some form of illegal status
      2) the US never forced El Salvador to take the financing nor wage it’s civil war, nor did it force Salvadoran communists to try to overthrow a democratically elected government. Basic adult responsibility says not to force on to others the mistakes you make yourself - the problem in Salvadoran culture is that personal responsibility does not exist.
