Sleeping Dogs is really a under-rated gem. The combat in it is so satisfying. Not to mention the environmental take-downs. Also, the combat is awesome in Yakuza series as well.
It's not underrated, it's boring and inconsistent. You can outfight any crowd by standing inside the circle and just hitting "react" to every attempt. You will literally never take any damage. Also, you cant play it through without driving, and Sleeping Dogs has like the shittiest driving mechanics and camera ever made in the history of 3d open world games.

So glad to see Absolver and Sifu on this list! The combat system that Sloclap uses on these titles are truly on of a kind! Absolver really shines bright to me in the case that you can basically create your own combat style through moves you learn throughout the game and really make your own fighting style. Its really a shame that the game stopped getting updates. This channel never seizes to impress me with its awareness in the gaming community! ❤

Chronicles Of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay is in my opinion the best first person perspective melee combat ever created in a game, the weight, the physics its just perfection, its also fun as hell.
I'd like to point out that the combat in Sleeping Dogs is not inspired by the Batman Arkham games. The game is a spiritual successor to the True Crimes series, which had a similar combat system. Both games came out well before Arkham City did.

If I have the option, I go for melee. Man i miss Clover Studios so much and God Hand was such a banger (such an amazing studio while they lasted luckily Platinum is still a great studio and Clover live on through them (Speaking of SEGA studios, i really miss Toshiro Nagoshi being at the company, he was the man who made Yakuza what it is today, i'll forever thank him for bringing my favourite game series to life)
Hand to hand combat is always fun in games, especially ones that allows you to experiment with different moves and techniques, mastering everything. Eventually becoming a living weapon.

God Shaolin Monks was so much fun back in the day. I remember grinding the game with my friends trying to unlock different characters and finding hidden items throughout the maps, didnt realize it was underrated tho
I'm surprised you did not mention Oni. Was a notoriously difficult fighting game that sadly became more of a hidden gem. Lots of fun once you got the hang of it.
I recommend Urban Reign for the PS2, made by the Tekken creators, it's a more gang fight city crime oriented take of the taken combat formula, also being completely on a 3d plane rather than the 2d plane of Tekken. Great looking attacks combos and grapples, amazing music that pumps you up, and really fun 4 player fighting arenas. One of my favorite games of all time.
Absolutey love absolver,and i know its only a weapon type but the fists/claws in nioh 2 have some strict timing to pull off certain combos but its so satisfying
I really liked the hand to hand combat system in sleeping dogs. The skills like car hijacking and all the environmental kills are very satisfying. Wei Sheng is actually an underrated protagonist. Hope we get a sequel someday.

Great list! An older one I'd mention is Jade Empire. Take the great writing of old school Bioware and throw in a fighting game-like combat system and you get a combo as satisfying as peanut butter & chocolate. There was a wide variety of different fighting styles, too, so you could find something that worked for your play style.
MK Shaolin Monks was so good! I played it co-op with a friend who didn't own a memory card so we tried beating it one sitting. Took us 12 hours to get 50% done until the game froze and never worked again 😂 Some months later we managed to get another copy and finished it in 5 hours, an absolute banger game, wish they would remake that
Urban reign is also a great spin off from the Tekken series and was really brutal and fun to play especially with 4 players, oh the friendships lost there😂 And an old PS1 game isn't great by today's standards was fighting force, but it was so much fun back then
Good to see Absolver on this list. I was wondering if they were going to mention it, as it seems to be quite a forgotten, or at the very least, not a very talked about game, but I really liked it. The way you could select what moves you had in your arsenal to create your own unique fighting style was awesome! It was quite a hard game, but once you started to master your unique style you felt like a badass! Shame the game wasn't very long though and didn't get many expansions. It almost felt like a bit of a tech demo at times. Hopefully they'll make a sequel one day. They had an amazing foundation to build something truly special on
Breakdown is the game I forgot about but was one of the best games I played. I always tried to remember the name and I'm so glad this video was made so now I know.
Red Dead Online paired with the combat system made for some deadly memorable experiences. My character was a tiny cowgirl, so I was always ready to defend myself in saloons and small buildings against other players. I remember having Atomic Blonde levels of fighting in small spaces, pulling out knives, disarming guns, using chokeholds. It really made PvP that much more intense, interesting, and personal when you transition from a firefight into a full on knife fight. Really hope GTA 6 and more sandbox games incorporate more hand-to-hand mechanics, that’s next generation gaming.
Also in the community for Godhand players there's an infamous challenge known as the KMS (Kick Me Sign) challenge where begining mid way through chapter 2 your character's girlfriend puts the sign on his back and the point of the challenge is to beat the game without losing the sign (which I believe is lost after dying after the checkpoint, but I know is lost for using ANY godhand powers at all) it forces you to really get good at the (somewhat weak) combat system, and not able to use most of the finishers due to them using the godhand so you need to really be picky on what combos you buy while trying to keep your damage (and difficulty) high
A great list but i'd also add Mad Max to it. Very satisfying and fun melee in a similar vein to Arkham. Hits feel very impactful and heavy and is a lot of fun, the game is primarily melee because ammo for guns is scarce so becoming skilled at melee is about survivability and you can save ammo as a panic button or for bosses.
Sifu is the best hand to hand combat game I have ever experienced, after learning everything and unlocking your skills and the amazing animation you really feel like a martial arts master
My biggest wish in all of gaming is to have a realistic hand to hand combat game that feels real and not artificial. I love the combat systems in Arkham and spider man, but that feels appropriate for that kind of game but want something that feels real and gritty. Some of my favorite movies are the bourne films and john wick and want a combat system in that realm and not unrealistically fast like Arkham. The Bourne game was so much fun and displayed the combat from the movies so well in the gameplay. Sifu was awesome but want something a tad more slower with less of the combat elements you see in gaming like the wind/air streak whenever you hit someone like in sifu I know I’m going off on a tangent here but I’m just such a big fan of martial art/action movies and just looking for a realistic and gritty hand to hand combat game.

Gotta say 1 game not on this list I consider EXTREMELYYY underrated, is Remember Me. The story is okay, nothing crazy special. But the world itself is amazing, and the combat is truly inspired. I haven’t play anything else even close to it and I really wish more people were aware of it because damn that’s as a great game!
I was waiting with baited breath for Sifu and really really glad to see it as number one. I got so addicted to the game that I got 100 hours easily within just two weeks of owning it. I go SO addicted to it that I had to detox from it and not play it after week three because I was just so overstimulated from it by then lol. I look forward to getting back into it eventually though.

I recently finished Sifu and it definitely is one of the best martial arts games ever. It was pretty tough and I wasn't a fan of the rogue like type of design but I still immensely enjoyed it. The story was also pretty basic but the hand to hand combat was so satisfying.
Breakdown in the thumbnail! Hell yeah! that game still looks alright for being an original Xbox game, there’s a unique feeling to the game, sadly the controls aged horribly, but it’s still a fun game nonetheless.
My favorite is still path of neo. Not much of a challenge and you can just gun through it but taking down legions of dudes with kung foo in slow motion was awesome to me.
Can't forget to mention Enter The Matrix on PS2. Granted, yes, there was a lot of shooting action, but the hand to hand combat was necessary to take out the agents and other parts. Using your focus ability really made you feel like a bad ass while karate chopping enemies
I think the arcade version of Ninja Gaiden was a really cool side-scrolling fighter. There were a lot of nifty interactions you could do, like flipping in the air and grabbing enemies around the neck to throw them across the screen. Backflipping off phone booths, grabbing onto hanging signs and kicking out at enemies. I always thought it was a shame it was never released on home consoles. The NES series had a totally different playstyle.
Omg.. No one EVER talks about how great Jet Li: Rise to Honor was! I was genuinely surprised and happy when you mentioned it. My father bought me a PS2 just because of that game alone.
Nothing like God Hand indeed. I started playing it recently and I am on the final stage now. Got a lot better than before. Done most of the challenges too, even that stupid 15 second timer challenge where you die in one hit. Really love the fact that there are 100+ moves to choose from and roulette moves are so fun to perform! It's challenging and humorous. One of the best beat 'em up games, imo. Edit: - Finally finished it, can't believe it only took one try to beat the final boss on normal mode. The credits were so fun too :D
Please give more Love to Urban Reign from PS2 it deserves more attention, there is nothing like its local multiplayer. I want some more games like that. Also, thanks for the mention of GOD HAND & Mortal Kombat Shoulin Monks, I really enjoyed those games and hoped they deserved more recognition. Great Video BTW, TYSM.

I still don't get why everyone thinks Mirror's Edge 2008 is SO much better than Mirror's Edge Catalyst... Whilst I love them both, Catalyst felt finished (for what they wanted to do). I felt like there was actually a story to follow and that it wasn't just a racetrack while running... I still love Catalyst to this day.
Love them both for different reasons. The immersion and ambience in ME2008 was unparalled, being able to reach and explore these behind the scenes sections of a modern-but-real feeling city was crazy fun. Whereas the story, graphics and visual direction of Catalyst accompanied by the expanded parkour move-set is incredible just the same.

I know I’m going off on a tangent here but I’m just such a big fan of martial art/action movies and just looking for a realistic and gritty hand to hand combat game.

@@Hayabusa217 sifu was a damn good game but still felt a little fast and included elements like the air streaks whenever you swing at someone. Feels a little cartoonish but i totally get it it’s a game. I guess I’m just a sucker for realism and watch way too many action movies
Play absolver, it's gritty and cool as fuck also that game needs more players so it can be brought back from the dead
@@cutcutado absolver is a great game but again still feels a tad cartoonish for my standards. This is just me by the way I’m not discouraging the game, I just have really specific wants in gaming lol
Red Dead 2 has realistic-feeling fist combat, even though it lacks depth
I didn’t realize how good Sifu was until I played it. The difficulty on master mode really makes you feel like a kung fu master when you get good at it

Gotta say 1 game not on this list I consider EXTREMELYYY underrated, is Remember Me. The story is okay, nothing crazy special. But the world itself is amazing, and the combat is truly inspired. I haven’t play anything else even close to it and I really wish more people were aware of it because damn that’s as a great game!
The memory mechanic was something although I'd be buying a new keyboard after playing that game.
I was waiting with baited breath for Sifu and really really glad to see it as number one. I got so addicted to the game that I got 100 hours easily within just two weeks of owning it. I go SO addicted to it that I had to detox from it and not play it after week three because I was just so overstimulated from it by then lol. I look forward to getting back into it eventually though.
I just gave it a go becasue of this video... Will try some more but so far I don't like the combat as much as Ghost of Tsushima which I can't beleive is not on this list..

I recently finished Sifu and it definitely is one of the best martial arts games ever. It was pretty tough and I wasn't a fan of the rogue like type of design but I still immensely enjoyed it. The story was also pretty basic but the hand to hand combat was so satisfying.
God Hand is forever golden.. that game was damn tough back in the day... especially the boss fights.. still one of my best old time games tbh

God Hand is one of my most favorite games ever. Finished it literally over 50 times. Needs a remaster or a sequel
My favorite is still path of neo. Not much of a challenge and you can just gun through it but taking down legions of dudes with kung foo in slow motion was awesome to me.
And Yakuza would 100% have made the list if it weren't for the mandatory Old Japanese Man table games... 🤦♂🤦♂

Can't forget to mention Enter The Matrix on PS2. Granted, yes, there was a lot of shooting action, but the hand to hand combat was necessary to take out the agents and other parts. Using your focus ability really made you feel like a bad ass while karate chopping enemies

I think the arcade version of Ninja Gaiden was a really cool side-scrolling fighter. There were a lot of nifty interactions you could do, like flipping in the air and grabbing enemies around the neck to throw them across the screen. Backflipping off phone booths, grabbing onto hanging signs and kicking out at enemies. I always thought it was a shame it was never released on home consoles. The NES series had a totally different playstyle.

Omg.. No one EVER talks about how great Jet Li: Rise to Honor was! I was genuinely surprised and happy when you mentioned it. My father bought me a PS2 just because of that game alone.

Nothing like God Hand indeed. I started playing it recently and I am on the final stage now. Got a lot better than before. Done most of the challenges too, even that stupid 15 second timer challenge where you die in one hit.
Really love the fact that there are 100+ moves to choose from and roulette moves are so fun to perform! It's challenging and humorous. One of the best beat 'em up games, imo.
Edit: - Finally finished it, can't believe it only took one try to beat the final boss on normal mode. The credits were so fun too :D
Recently beat the game as well, fighting Tiger Joe with no god hand was probably the toughest thing in that game

Shaolin Monks is hands down one of my most favourite game to play with my brothers!! We need more games like it man!!
Please give more Love to Urban Reign from PS2 it deserves more attention, there is nothing like its local multiplayer. I want some more games like that. Also, thanks for the mention of GOD HAND & Mortal Kombat Shoulin Monks, I really enjoyed those games and hoped they deserved more recognition.

I still don't get why everyone thinks Mirror's Edge 2008 is SO much better than Mirror's Edge Catalyst... Whilst I love them both, Catalyst felt finished (for what they wanted to do). I felt like there was actually a story to follow and that it wasn't just a racetrack while running... I still love Catalyst to this day.
Love them both for different reasons. The immersion and ambience in ME2008 was unparalled, being able to reach and explore these behind the scenes sections of a modern-but-real feeling city was crazy fun. Whereas the story, graphics and visual direction of Catalyst accompanied by the expanded parkour move-set is incredible just the same.
