PART 6 - BMW F650 BUCKING AND STALLING...WAS IT THE BATTERY ALL ALONG??

  • The stalling issue is back! Lost power about 10 miles in to a trip, bike was bucking and then stalled again at the side of the road. The diagnostic tool is reading a battery fault. Could it have been this all along? I will replace the battery soon and continue to test the bike.

    Hi, Katy
    Check voltage at the battery
    - over 12.7V ? Very OK.
    Voltage while engine is running
    - over 13.3 V? That is good for old bike.
What I found from sudden stalling even while high speed running was-
Loosened terminal of battery, BMS and broken power cable .
    Check fuses also definitely!
Sometimes keybox cable falls off too.
It's old bike- buddy. Don't be stressed too much. The monster will be just OK.
    Cheers.

Thank you, that is very helpful. I will run some checks. I have been meaning to replace the battery but I seem to have done the more complicated things first 🙈 I have noticed that the metal terminal fixed to my battery seems a bit wonky so it could be faulty/damaged.

When I bought mine in 2016 I had the same stalling issues. Some days 5-6 times in a row. Other days nothing.
2017 installed a new lithium ion battery. since then, the stalling issues are gone.
Good luck Katy :) and awesome to see the diagnosis tool 👌🏼

Thank you :) I have just installed a Motobat battery and am hoping it will resolve the issue. Only time will tell. I need to take it for some good runs first. The one I bought only a year ago must have been faulty, or I’ve damaged the metal terminals on the top when tightening the pos and neg cables. Will keep you posted :)

Hi Katy! It also can be some connection issues in cirquit. But yes, battery change first :)

Hiya, I will change the battery first and then see what’s happens. Thanks for the tip. :)

Just dropping this here in case anyone needs it:
I had a small issue with my -05 Dakar cutting out at idle (at red lights, when coasting, etc). Thought it was something fuel-related, but apparently all I needed to do was:
    - turn on the ignition
    - wait for the oil lights etc to go out
    - twist the throttle 3 or 4 times slowly from closed to fully open and back
    - wait a few seconds
    - then start it without giving it any throttle (just letting the starter do its job)
Apparently the computer doesn't like any throttle at all when starting, and gets as confused as a first-time flyer at Heathrow if you do it too often. This trick just resets the idle control as far as I know, not sure if it has any impact on high speed stalling.

Thanks Leon. I also find that works for me when I’ve had issues stalling at slow speed. I always wait for the lights to go out on the dash before starting or she runs funny. Hasn’t cured it at high speed though. Hoping the new battery will make a difference but I haven’t had the chance to ride her much lately. Thanks for the message.

Hi Katy, I live in Australia and I have been enjoying your UA-cam series
A few years back I had a Kawasaki Vulcan 1600 Cruiser ( V Twin Engine ) that started a cut out whilst I was riding , ie the engine would lose all power completely!
This was very dangerous for me, particularly in traffic as I had to get into the left hand lane somehow and pull over on the side of the road, the problem was intermittent and would happen unexpectedly.
When it did happen and I managed to get to the side of the road safely the bike would start back up ,after I turned the ignition key on and off, therefore I knew it had to be some sort of electrical issue?, and it was.
There was a faulty "FALL OVER SENSOR" under the petrol tank that was causing the issue and once this was replaced the bike was fine but it took a some time to actually diagnose the problem by a process of elimination.
I bought the bike brand new and the problem started happening after the bike had done around 5000 klms
By the way I have a BMW G650GS myself and therefore find your UA-cam video's very informative and helpful

Sorry to hear that you have also experienced this dangerous situation when riding. It seems to have happened to a lot more people than I thought it would have. When you are on 2 wheels it is risky enough as it is, let alone having stalling problems when travelling at high speed. Well done on fixing your Vulcan. Let’s hope the new battery will help my bike, or if not that I will be able to find whatever the electrical fault is that is causing it.

Happened to me too last year, the first time I left the city for a bigger test-drive no less, stalled at the side of the road, it was quite a scare. But changing the battery and cleaning the area a bit seemed to resolve it, did not have any issues since. Be sure to clean the oxidization off those cable heads that attach the battery itself too.

Thanks for that. which battery did you buy? Yes, it is no fun stalling or losing power whilst riding. At least we are both safe!

I can't share a link for antigravity batteries here. I fully recommend them. Re-Start ATX-12AH-RS is the one on their site

Thanks. I have already installed a Motobatt battery but if I continue to have problems I will take a look at the ATX-12AH-RS.

@@HaynesGarage Yeah I was recommended these when I tried to buy shorai. They were backordered and the owner of adventuredesigns website said that he didn't know when they would get them. So he recommended this. Said it's what he uses in his F650. They have a special feature that prevents you from draining the battery beyond starting voltage. Previously you had to get to the battery and push a button on it to use the reserve. Now however they have a remote that you plug into the battery tender cable to activate reserve. I haven't put it on a tender all winter and it still starts each month.

Oh no! I'm glad you are safe and sound. There's a guy in Canada named Kevin - very knowledgeable about the F650. He experienced the surging and stalling problem and always found it was directly related to the battery. He switched to Shorai brand lithium and said it has been great since then.

I went to get a shorai and they are on back order so Adventure designs' owner recommended antigravity to me. Never looking back. Way better than shorai.

I had an ongoing issue with my F650 gs stalling, at low revs but at high speeds too. Turns out someone had tried to rob the bike and tried to break the handlebar lock by forcing it. This misaligned the handlebars and put slight tension on the throttle due to how it was routed. Then when I started the ignition the computer was getting a wrong reading on the throttle position. This meant it cut out the engine while riding. I realigned the handlebars and rerouted the throttle cable so it would not get pulled. I make sure to have the hadlebars centred now and wait for the red light to turn off before starting the engine and it hasnt cut out since!

    • @HaynesGarage
      @HaynesGarage  Рік тому

Thanks for the info. I believe my throttle cable is routed ok on my bike but you’re right, this can confuse the computer and create running issues. I’m convinced my problem was with my old faulty battery but only time will tell. My next job will be fixing a leaking fork!
