Very interesting, though it might prove difficult to harvest the olives in the future with so much plants underneath. Plus I wonder if watering indirectly a mature olive tree won't weaken it in the long run, keeping its roots closer to the surface, thus not needing to grow deep to find moisture. Either way, love your content it is very inspiring!

Nice job. However, I wonder if irrigating these plants will hurt the olive tree. Also, the variety of plants you chose seems to require very different irrigation and soil needs. Not sure if one of the plants is blueberry. If yes, it likes acid soil which is different from many of the others. Best of luck.

Great job! The olive tree just 1 root with multiple branches, probably a fire survivor tree? If you want it to grow properly unfortunately you need to start it fresh leaving 1 or max 2 branches out of all those.
Hi Bronze, you're totally right, but as we're in summer, the shade that is provided this way is more important to us to establish the other plants. Once they're settled we will prune the olive back to 1 main leader trunk.

Yes and trees aren't cheap either so I really don't want to stuff it up and have them die either. It's very daunting 🙄

hi guys, beautifull work !! but just for info, i did almost the same thing last year also in Portugal at my friend s olace and after a few weeks lots of roots from the olives trees came up to take advantage of the irrigation water. So we had to do it again and put some geotextile underground to avoid that issue. good luck and keep going guys. you are on the good path !
Hi Frankgers, the roots of the olive will not pose any problems. In fact, the root systems of all the trees, shrubs, plants combined will create a mutually beneficial relationship with different groups of bacteria, fungi and soil life. The irrigation is just to get the surrounding plants established. Max 2 years. After that we'll remove the irrigation and let the plants survive on their own. The quality of the olive oil and olives will become much better this way!
Awesome video! Careful new roots don't grow at the base of the tree over time and wrap around it choking it if they soil you added is high. Doesn't look like you added way too much though and the end look of it is amazing!
Thank you! We added roughly 15cm (about 6 inches) of compost. We try to remove most of the compost around the trunk and in autumn will prune the olive back to 1 leader. The available growing space will be overtaken by all the other plants we planted so there will be only one way for the olive and that is down!

You both have nice job good carrier why you both left that metro city life and chose this simple life?.... please reply sir.....
In our opinions... there's no better way of living life than being immersed by nature. Farming/homesteading can provide that.

Great job! One question, what is the water source for the circular irrigation system? is the pipe connected to a nearby tank? I would appreciate if you expand a bit on it.
For olive trees you Need a scissor with the cut on both sides 🤗 there is a more precise cut
Is this a nursery garden? It seemed a loureiro tree in there. It becomes a big tree, bigger then the olive tree. And some other in the midle of the olive tree regrow...That olive tree will regrow big and strong just by being pruned and have other plants cleaned around it. It dosent need all that compost and mulch, nor that much water. And the suculents also thrive in more harsher conditions...

Plenty of citrus fertiliser around your feijoa will produce bumper crops in the future. The bay tree will get enormous - at least that was my experience in NZ
Always wondering where you get that huge amount of compost ground from.... also in previous video’s on agriculture without digging. Me too, I would never use tractors or dig....if I had that amount of compost....every year....So my question is: ‘where does that compost come from and how much do you pay it?....Thats so important for young serious interested farmers...in fact it is one of the most important questions in agriculture.
I have a farm in the north of Italy, with very heavy clea ground and we invest much time, enery and ideas in building good soil. We have also three cows but it’s by far not enough for compost on all our ground for our food ... We got self sustainable in many things, but good compost remains so precious and not easy to make... In video’s they never talk about this basic start....always about no digging and never how they actieve to have all these compost ground... :)

Nice! Wondering does around the tree serve any purpose? We planted young trees, and some plants, then they were eaten by deers and Schnecken

Was the mulch gathered little sticks or did you get it from the forest floor?
I'd keep an eye on that tree. When you mulch up the trunk like that, they will start growing roots from the trunk into the mulch. Those roots can wrap around the tree and strangle it.
I thought the back hose was a soaker hose, but then you watered with a different hose. Is the black spiral hose for daily watering and you were just giving a good initial soak with the other hose? Thanks!! I'm trying to do similar things in our yard, learning as I go!
Hi Andrea, indeed! Just gave it a very good initial watering. From now on it will just be the drip hose we installed.

Hi Pieter. Indeed! Not too long ago a fire damaged most of the olive trees here. The previous owner cut them down with a chainsaw, but fortunately many of them have resprouted.
Rps a solar well pump company has a pressure pump that works on solar or ac you can adjust the pressure from 5 to 24 pounds it might help you save on fuel
How did you select the plant varieties to plant so close to the olive tree? Or was there no criteria?
Hi Vicente. We selected the plants based on the layers of a food forest and their uses, applicable to this climate. The canopy tree in this little feature is the olive. The smaller trees under that are going to be bay leaf and feijoa (which will be pruned, harvested, used for future cuttings and are planted towards the western side to provide shade during the warmest time of the day). The shrub layer is filled up with edible berries: blackberry, blueberry, currants. Herbaceous layer is filled up with a large diversity of different Mediterranean herbs and the canna indica (which has edible roots). Groundcover includes strawberries and a variety of drought tolerant succulents. For the vine layer we planted a grape. And we filled up the gaps with annual vegetables like peppers, eggplants, bush tomatoes, lettuces, onions and some melons/cucumbers. Hope that helps!

I wonder how are you going to harvest the olives or anything in the middle when the plants grow and there are no gaps for stepping closer? I understand that with that density you are discouraging weeds to grow, but just wonder about harvesting.
I'm very interested why you chose portugal. Is desertification and climate change a worry, and is portugal in that sense a good coice for someone going off grid?

Most tree's here in Australia if you build up the soil around them they get root rot and die

need make few solar home mad projects. one would shake with plastic roof or sides or both. hole top under roof leave water out. use dry out fire wood. cut own border from tree stack with spacer in this building dry out make own furniture future or sale wood some money. solar project two. painted with grill or furnace black paint. make box. staple black screen bottom sloop tope put plexus glasses top roof or glasses. had problems both. glasses break in winter if cat goes bathroom on it. plexus glasses bow in heat summer. that not end world want moisture leave bugs food. dehydrate garden food. pepper super easy dehydrate. when get tiny shriveled peaces put blender make spice powder. or soak olive oil use subs or pezza. same tomatoes might put salt tomatoes. soak olive oil few days before use them. keep dry in mason jar storage use old lides keep dry last for ever. dehydrate oregano, basil in leave flakes or powder. dehydrate garlic and onion into powder. all used make home made tomatoes sauses. yet figure out how make solar boiler boil water. so until then have stove make home made sauce. powder stuff let do this winter when want house hot.
