Jockey mistake - goes for home too early

- Опубліковано 27 жов 2010
- Australian jockey Rhys McLeod 'goes for home' in the Moonee Valley (Melbourne, Victoria, Australia) straight despite there being another lap to run. 3000 metre handicap which was run on Thursday 24th January 2002. No surprise, McLeod's mount (Mystic Outlaw) ran 72 lengths last and the jockey was given a lengthy suspension. Note that the cameraman was fooled too as he tightens in on the 'winner' the first time around. The caller is Greg Miles.

Was actually in attendance for this, the first and only time that I’ve heard unambiguous laughter from punters at the racetrack!
I trained that horse, he came out and won his next 3 starts over hurdles so not all lost. It was an honest mistake and nobody felt worse than Rhys. He called me and the owners the following day to apologise yet again. People make mistakes, he was approx 25-1 so was hardly in the betting......
Tanzman78 You're a class act Sir
And you talk shit
@@jadetaylor8341 and you don't I suppose
Cheating fuck
@@nugsruleify who cheated?
You can bet that no matter how many races Rhys McLeod wins, he'll be mostly remembered for this one, LOL.
The jockey still rides. Rode Cedarberg to win the Group 1 The BMW in 2011. Also rode Ethiopia to win the Group 1 ATC Derby in 2012. It was just a simple mistake and I'm sure he has learnt from it. We all make mistakes.
He is still riding winners - won on "Five Bulls" for Nick Ryan at Bendigo, Victoria on 25.11.21
Also - it was Damien Oliver who won that race on him. Rhys only sat on the horse once of 17 starts - Ironically the horse's last start and ran 7/13 - the horse was retired immediately after that race
If I owned that horse I'd start running it over 1200 metres, was a good performance up until then haha.
It's happened to lots of good jockeys over the years. Funny though. At Longchamp in France, there are two different winning posts, depending on the distance of the race. The great Willie Carson once got them mixed up and rode a finish 100m too soon on a filly called High Hawk. **it happens.
Yes, I always thought that was a stupid set-up at Longchamp.
'Keep going son' lol.
Yeah, I watched it late last night here in the US. When I found out the jockey's name, Rhys McLeod, I thought, hey, that sounds familiar, it couldn't be the same guy that blew the race in the UA-cam video? Its a strange world isn't it! The horse Ethiopia came from last to win the Australian Derby, I think it deserves most of the credit.
Moonee Valley is in Melbourne, Australia. It's in the suburb of Moonee Ponds. It is Melbourne's 'third' racecourse behind Flemington (1) and Caulfield (2)
Cool story.
On the subject of jockey errors:
Many years ago I backed a horse - CASPIAN SEA - even money favourite in the Grand National Hurdle, at Flemington. The Jockey waited and waited. How I wished he had taken off. I kept yelling "take off now. NOW! NOW! Move now and you absolutely bolt in". Then just as he made his long awaited move, the second favourite crashed to the turf - and you guessed it, Caspian Sea fell right over the top of him! My hundred dollar bet bit the dust! I was absolutely shattered. Gazumped. 100 dollars was worth a lot of money back then. I have never forgotten the absolute desolation of that falling feeling, and it was my first ever big bet.
Caspian Sea, the horse that should have won that day, by well over 25 lengths!! The slow thinking jockey's name - long forgotten!
Neil Harrington Maybe he was just riding to instructions, the spill was unforseen in all fairness and I'm sure you'd have made a killing otherwise. It's a part of the game I suppose. Hope both jockeys and horses involved survived unscathed
😂😂
he wanted to win the race twice that's all...
The poor horse is a trained stayer! He's probably thinking: WTF!!! as he's belting around the corner first time LOL.
Keep going , son! You might find a taxi out of the state before anyone catches you!
It's not the first time it's happened, but a sdenior hoop making such a bad error in this day and age is unforgivable
I’ve been playing the horses almost 50 years now and I’ve never, ever seen anything like that. Wooooppps- how embarrassing is that?
Seems like the jockey had a bigger bet on another horse to win hahaha
Not really. If it were a 1400 race or even a mile, I could understand it. But tactics are huge in staying races and this shows clearly that there was no communication between trainer and jockey. Even if they didn't speak at all a good jockey should keep an eye on the form of the other horses in the race just to know how they run their races. And even if he didn't do that, the snail-slow pace and the reluctance of anyone to go forwards should have made him realize that he was not in a sprint.
Why would they suspend him!? That's pretty fucked up he just made a mistake it could happen to anybody!
To me i think the jockey who knows there is a steep way after the first bend,he took long lead in order to cover the steep way and keep his horse in front ,but the horse got tired with that steep way,it is mis judgement ,it happens in racing .
No. Most horse only have a 400 full gallop sprint. You can choose to use it at any time but once spent that's it. You do not "sprint" early in a 3000m event
Here after Michael Poy at Kyneton
He's now working as a disc jockey.
Got sacked.......played the 33's at 45rpm
Actually he is still riding winners - won on "Five Bulls" for Nick Ryan at Bendigo, Victoria on 25.11.21
@@IB-1963 “Actually” it was a joke, I really couldn’t care any less about horse racing. And before you asked, I watched the video because the title grabbed my attention just like many others on UA-cam.
@@RealLife73 Yes, I got it - but thought you might have wanted to know he was still about - this video clip is 11 years old and your response was 4 years ago. I am glad you responded - I have often wondered if people keep their accounts for a while or No. Cheers
It happened here too in UK, I believe it was Brian Taylor on Snow Knight - but they kept going and won the prestigious race !!
That must have been a while ago ! Didn't that horse win our Derby - mid 70s ? I'm guessing '74, but I was only 10
I don't think he was on Cedarberg (RIP), I reckon it may have been Oliver??? Anyway, his ride on Ethiopia in the Derby was superb, and he handled the celebrations post-race with a heap of class. Was probably within his rights to go off tap considering the occasion but no histrionics, and looked after the horse and his fellow riders over the line. Credit to him. G Boss take note.
shux422 - G. Boss need not take notice as he has 3 Melbourne Cups in his Trophy Cabinet. Would have been 4 if he didn’t get suspended before this years great race, as he would have been riding the Light Weight winner “Vow + Declare” 🐎🐎🐎🏆🏆🏆
You are correct (rainy day so I checked the official horse results) Cedarberg won 4/17 Starts: 10.1.10 Ryan Maloney; 25.9.10 Chris Symonds; 9.2.11 Michael Walker and the last race it ever won Damien Oliver was on board 2.4.11 before being retired on 6.8.11 which was the only time Rhys McLeod EVER sat on the horse when it was a 60-1 chance - it ran 7/13 in the 1200m Good4 AURIE'S STAR Group 3
i'm not a vet but I know a horses ass when I see one. lol
He set a great pace but I wonder what he told the trainer when he got back or did he keep on going home with the horse?
There were probably no dramas. The horse was 25-1 and in reality a Hurdler not a flat ground race horse. It ran another flat race after this incident and then put two wins together over hurdles. It then never came close to winning another race either on the flat or over the hurdles and was retired in April, 03.
didnt get fired actually mate, he rode a Grp 1 for the trainer last year
I agree; did you see the gymnastics celebration at the end of this years (2012) Dubai World Cup?!
Nolan's mistake was minor compared to this mistake... Nolan still won! He just didn't check behind him to see where the other horses were lol
Super win by Ethiopia - looks a star. Fourth lifetime start winning a derby; so much improvement to come. Scary!!! Have to say hat's off to Rhys though. Impressed with how he handled the moment. No ridiculous histrionics which has unfortunately become the norm these days (see Boss, N.Rawiller, idiot Barzalona). Got the laps right too, pretty important that bit!!
Jockey trying to find a hole to hide in hahaha
You're fired
Our last minute jockey change did this. Race was mile and sixteenth. Muddy, Rainey day. All we could do is laugh. What are you gonna do? Lol
Unprofessional to not know what distance he's actually running. I know people make mistakes but geez. Mistakes also created Chernobyl
Poor bastard! X
Kieran McEvoy a great jockey won it :) i remember this dude in the UK
Or even Kerrin - yes, I used to prefer him to Frankie Dettori when they both rode for Godolphin
KAF128 - Kerrin still rides for Godolphin on occasion as of 2019 for trainer James Cummings, grandson of the Legendary “Cups King” J.B.”Bart” Cummings, and has many many Group 1 victories, including 3 Melbourne Cups. 🐎🐎🐎🏆🏆🏆.
I don't think the cameraman was fooled, it was quick thinking to capture something out of the ordinary. I don't know how you could confuse 1200m with 3000m but stranger things have happened.
Why, boy did he make a stupid mistake. McLeod's mount (Mystic Outlaw) ran 72 lengths last and the jockey was given a lengthy suspension, why the suspension thou?
You have to ride the horse to "instructions" and give your mount "every opportunity of winning" as per the rules of racing.
This is weird from Rhys.. maybe he had a bad sleep the night before and everything got shuffled in his head :o
He should never be allowed on a horse again, how do you get the distance wrong by more than half the distance?
I'm sure banning someone for life for one mistake isn't an overreaction.
At least Rhys got double the cheers
How would you feel if you were the owners, or worse still the POOR HORSE!!!
1:29 Keep going son, keep going!
I never saw a horse race like this race then let’s go to a slower gallop?
Please somebody tell me what was this? 🇺🇸
Bronx Cheers.... I haven't that phrase in decades. XD
Pretty simple, he made a big mistake and I'm sure a lot of punters lost out a lot bigger than he did - can't allow jockeys to make mistakes of that nature and get away with them, otherwise you could slip a jock some cash and tell him to do the same! Suspension the only fair punishment!
I bet the owner saw purple of rage when seeing this happen :D
Not the brightest lightbulb in the stable.
Are jockeys regularly checked for listening devices when weighing in after races?
I bet that jockey face would be hilarious when he realised the truthXD
does he not realize the race is still going when the horses are beside him and still picking up speed?
horsepony3
I mean, the horse was under whip and rode out a strong tempo 1200m, rallying it again clearly isn't worth it at that point, you could easily break down and injure the horse or even kill it by demanding more, the horse isn't going to win after expending all that energy early, so what's the point? Cut your loses, call it a day.
Bad, bad bad jockey, he's a professional how can't take on count the distance? Thinking on hes wife ?
The commentator's remarks towards the jockey are admirably conciliatory and deprecatory - obviously no relation, not even via deportee, to John McCrirrick.
He used up all the energy in the start...
wow... that is a horrible thing to forget. ooooh, poor guy.
Unfortunate
Someone's getting fired!
Trainer to Jockey: We both need money... so.. take him past the first turn and just let him go!! when you cross the line I will shuffle the owners to their cars and tell them to make our cheques out this week.
How long was his suspension? They'd need add a few weeks for stupidity. Surely a jockey knows how long hi race was.
that jockey mistake, nearly would have be beaten by Nolan mistake on black cav... lol
lol I'd be so nervous I would do that too😂😂
lol, why did they ban him.. he made a mistake.
That's Australian jockeys for you
Of course that's never happened in the USA or the UK has it ?
AnotherFastnet70 - Haha, I’m just wondering what this Jerk’s riding credentials are! I’m thinking that would be a Far Bigger laugh than his Ill informed comment. But then again, these (SAE) SELF ASSESSED EXPERTS, have vastly higher IQ’s + have never erred ever EVER. 🤣🤣🤣

that's just funny - can't be all perfect can they?
For something similar from Ireland look at Roger Loughran on Central House at Leopardstown in 2005.It's hilarious how he stands up in the irons.Search under ' jockey mistakes winning post' or 'Hi Cloy 2005'.
ha! to anyone who had a bet down
how could you think your riding a 1200m horse in a 3000m race??,was it a pick-up ride and he did no form before the race at all??
But drink water "° looked like he had too go 🚦 🏃'.
Wtf was he smoking? 😂
How on earth do you misjudge by 1400m lol.
he should go back to school to learn how to count until 2

dont expect too much from an aussie jockey, they aint all frankie dettori
leepsl11 - We have plenty here in 🇦🇺 Past and Present that have been and are, the equal of Frankie. He actually got suspended in our Biggest race “The Melbourne Cup” about a week ago, for causing Major Interference to a couple of other runners. Very Amateurish from a supposed “Polished” Jockey, when as is mount was “Laying In” he should have stopped riding about 30m earlier (to straighten his mount), but opted not to, hence the “Big Suspension and Fine”. The horse he Checked severely, finished 4th but was going to win the race for sure, until the incident. The stewards protest was upheld and Dettori’s collect went from $55,000 for second prize money, to $15,000 for fourth prize money, oh, and a suspension and fine to boot. Frankie has been comin’ to 🇦🇺 year after year for about 16 years or so, trying to beat our best, and as of 2019, he hasn’t succeeded yet. So I’d be more than happy to put one of our 🇦🇺 jockeys on any of my horses whether it be here local or abroad. And FYI Ryan Moore is a far better rider than Frankie Dettori, AND he won our Melbourne Cup (at his 1st or 2nd attempt) about 5 years ago on Protectionist. 🐎🏆🇦🇺
What a knobjockey. it's a 3km race not a 1km.
HSimon1981 - And how many races was it that you won again sorry hmmmm? Knob Comment from an (SAE) Self Assessed Expert. 🤭😴😴😴
Mega fail

they don't carry guns in Australia , don't they ?
Bien pendejo mi apá.

Horses were not put on this earth to be used and abused for man's pleasure. If you can call greed, desperation and ego tripping pleasures. Horses are ancient healers and have the power to replenish and save a man's soul . How man chooses to enjoy this game called horseracing just proves that Satan really does exist and those men have no soul to be saved. Horses do not enjoy racing they run through fear. It is fear that you are enjoying. Think about that .Take as long as you need .
It sounds like you'd enjoy Rick Gore and his UA-cam channel think like a horse
Horses have nothing to do with saving the soul
Mishelle, what about the horse and cart days. I guess that's cruel too. Making them drive us to the tobacco shop how disgusting.
Mishelle Mccormack - Horses do NOT run through fear. Dumbest comment of the Millenium. Who helps you through life?
You are stating generalisations and you have No clue. Many trainers will tell you about particular horses who get upset because the Trainer wants to spell them between preparations - they refuse to stay in the paddock and come up to the Stables at what is the regular morning work out times. Many horses display human ego characteristics - Just look at Black Caviar - strutting over to the Crowd for applause after each win and prancing around like a Prima Donna
HAHA! So funny! LOL :)
I bet that jockey doesn't race anymore.
