  • After a tough few months, the West Somerset Railway pulled itself through with a commemorative anniversary gala. It celebrated the 40th Anniversary of the full reopening of the line, which took place in stages from 1976 to 1979. A feast of mixed traction took part in the event from steam to classic diesel traction, with good weather too which provided a nice shine to the event. The main highlight being the two Manors doubleheading hauling a 14 coach train along the whole line, so turn up the volume in just listen to them roar!
    Locomotives featured:
BR (WR) Manor Class No.7828 Odney Manor along with No.7802 Bradley Manor
    GWR 5700 Pannier Tank No.7752
BR Class 14 D9526 (making an unexpected appearence rescuing 7752 which failed at Wiliton)
    BR Class 37 D6948
With this fine event, it is hoped that the WSR long continues to run into the future for generations to come.

I wish I'd stayed on for the return run - that night shot at Stogumber was brilliant!

After the train had past they can be heard climbing and whistling another two miles for 10 mins, as the high winds had subsided at that point. So was quite a spectacle still after they had disappeared into the darkness

@@Railscenevideo I did stay at Stogumber station for another 30 mins just to enjoy the peace, tranquility and nature of the station. At late at night you can hear the sounds of Tawny Owls hooting/screeching, foxes calling and all sorts. Its why Stogumber is one of my top 3 favorite stations on the line, the other two being Crowcombe and Blue Anchor

I don't blame you I was pretty much the same at Washford Bank as the bank is in a deep cutting where engines working hard is gunna make alot of noise. But with two Manors I was nearly deafened by their sheer sound volume! (no joke)

I am so lucky to be living more or less on the doorstep of this great railway, and can visit pretty well anytime. Been fascinated by the line ever since I was a youngster back in the 60s. Have now volunteered to work on it in my retirement! What could be better?

Its strange as it didn't show on any timetables, plus the Pannier seemed to be fine didnt look like it had any issues

Simply brilliant photography! Sights and sounds fantastic, how did you get the Manor's to sound their whistles so enthusiastically? Loved the whistle through Stogumber at the end. Fantastic video!
