She is such a master at painting even the minor characters with great empathy and depth! Lovely discussion here, Joe. And thank you for your kind words! (Incidentally, I misspoke when I said I most liked Jenny Uglow's biography of George Eliot. I should have said Kathryn Hughes.... I had Uglow on my brain because I recently ran across another biography written by her. My apologies.)
@@JoeSpivey02 I should not blame anybody but myself for this! although it would help if my local bookshops would stock so-called "masterworks" of fiction! I have started reading Brideshead Revisited in the meantime! Absolutely adore it so far!
Joe, I totally agree with what happens to Mr Casaban and Dorothea after marrying. I felt sad for both of them, really. I read this for the first time last Summer.
Something is interesting about novels in general, and in this case, about, Middlemarch, which gave me an idea. The statement is, underdeveloped, but is, that people are products of their circumstances and that they cannot be anything else than that they are. So, in rural England in this case (that could happen in other countries as well, in probably really different circumstances and with different outcomes), characters are somehow doomed/blessed to be what they are and have no other possibilities, that people are somehow helpless, when God made the devil stronger than the man. Is there a novel that claims otherwise, except the Biblical story about Job, that celebrates life more and offers something more rewarding than eventual reward in heaven and praise of accepting life the way it is in its mistakes?
Smoking ban, almost like it is meant to annoy me, however...😂. Any review on music? Favorite or not so favorite playlists? Music is missing in the background of lots of booktube/youtube book review videos, in my opinion. About the rugby, I do see that you are a kind of fan, but I cannot even imagine you play rugby, that would be monsterish, considering your weight/body musculature and predispositions, not to mention how literature and rugby are real opposites and how it is monstruosly ridiculous considering reading Middlemarch. I do think I will watch this livestream, but I do think it will hurt your channel and everything you have been working on for months/years to build your audience, influence SEO and all kinds of algorithms that are probably building up, and probably does not interest majority of your viewers at all. I would skip the sports completely to not ruin my channel, unless it is about biographies of athletes or mentioning of players/sports in literature
Rugby is not the reserve of brutes and caterwauling airheads. It can be a game of intricate strategy and cunning. I'll be doing just what I want to do on this channel thank you very much, regardless of how that freedom affects my audience growth. I'm here to encourage and affect, not churn out widgets for a wad of cash.

I assumed, and without mistake, that you lack some knowledge about programming/marketing in general, considering your dyploma and interests, and I do. So, it was unpaid advice. The choice does influence optimization and your channel will be further more difgicult to promote, which probably means algorithm will not recognize your potential audience and transfer you to a form of internet hell, where people who want to hear from you or people you want to discuss with will not hear you at all. I don't care about your attitude towards money, nor I deny you any liberties, I am stating the facts, and these are the facts.
@@JoeSpivey02 I did not say a thing about rugby, which is liked for a reason, but is definitely no child game sport, it is a brutal and physically demanding, definitely with no graceful moves as in gymnastics nor it is contact free, and known for controversies about brain injuries. Probably a form of mental exercise or small physical can help stimulate these areas, and I do hope some of players with injuries will have at least normal and functional life, if they find the way to recover them. And nothing to do with optimization of your channel nor content you are usually publishing

The Spivey saga continues with another brilliant entry! I am so close to hunting down a middlemarch copy!
And yet your shelves still exhibit an Eliotless frown! Shame on you sir 🤣

I missed reading this masterpiece, but definitely seen something more interesting and mind soothing.
But you could watch or analyze excerpts/scenes from movies, plays, that are novel adaptations, if you are interested in such things
4:55 are you sure about these 4? Or Dorothea? Cause I do think they are really different, according to something I have read
