Before Jomez there was Spin tv. Jomez took it to another level but Spin tv was the first to do round coverage so they deserve a lot of respect for what they contributed.

Actually, there was disc golf video monthly and the European lcgm8 guys who did it before the spin TV guys.
And disc golf planet existed as the only live golf coverage for a long time before DGN.
Our sport is amazing. It's history is vast

@@nuiti2684 did you listen to everything they said? They didn't say that Jomez was the first to ever cover a disc golf. In fact quite the contrary, they specifically stated that they were NOT the first to post content, and that there were other things that showed stuff here and there, but that they were the first full production company exclusively for disc golf content covering every major event, not just an event here and there. And now there are multiple companies that cover every event. So it is not that they were the first to cover anything, it was that they were the first to do it at that level.

@@clintsawyer7702 they said, and I quote, "...becasue of JomezPro we have....Central Coast...these companies are there because of what Jomez did." And that's wrong. Jomez added to the escalation of post production, but the dedicated youtubers were already doing that.

UDisc surely deserves the credit you ascribe to it. Disc Golf Course Review should be acknowledged as an important online predecessor to the more mobile-friendly UDisc app. DGCR was doing much earlier what UDisc is doing now.

Great video. I agree with all of these! I would have also considered the introduction of Prodigy Disc and the formation of the first paid disc golf team. It completely uprooted the business side of the sport. The manufacturers had to reconsider how they would fairly compensate their athletes for fear of their players leaving for another company. This eventually led to Innova introducing the tour series line which is now copied by just about every major manufacturer.

back in 2004 my family went to a gas station and bought some DX sharks and tried disc golf. I was 11. It was SO BORING! I remember thinking wow go for a walk in the park and toss a stupid frisbee 50-100ft and drop it in the basket. Organized sports were my life and frisbees were for hippies. I think all I needed was to see somebody toss my disc 300 ft and it would've changed my perspective. I ended up picking it up after high school and its been my passion for ten years now.
The DX was built different back then. I regret not being able to preserve the disc.

Disc golf has become such a big part of my life, i threw my first disc om March 6th last year. Now, not even a year later I am working on getting the first 18 holes course with a double layout installed in my county. I wish I could go out every day and throw a couple of rounds.

Great video! I've played disc golf for a long time (25+ years). My dad introduced me via casual target golf in the park with lids, to purchasing my first driver in the early 2000s (a Cheetah), to learning how to actually throw drivers properly years later with the arrival of youtube, to now, with stacks and stacks of discs and accompanying gear. Disc golf is the most persistent hobby in my life. I introduced my wife to the sport and she loves it just as much. My kids aren't sold entirely yet, but they're still young. Anyway, this video makes me so happy to see how far the sport has come, and the legitimacy it's gained. I can't wait to see how far it expands, and all the amazing memories it will facilitate.

This is a great video. Please indulge me with what I think you glossed over that is the MOST SIGNIFICANT…..It was Tom Monroe (PDGA #33) and Lavone Wolfe (PDGA #580) that turned the power over to the players and it was because of them that we throw beveled edged discs. They deserve mention…or at least for you to reach out and say thank you. I have their numbers if you need them.

Interesting segment. Thankyou. For me, a big take away from the many insightful points mentioned had to be, "...It takes the money of the everyday disc golfer to keep the sport going." Renewing my membership and perfecting the lost art of championship level missed putts makes me a key cog in how this all blossomed into greatness. Uhhhh, you're welcome. I'll be getting bogeys all week. Try the veal.

Dude, I totally agree! A lot of my friends and I got our start during covid. I have to say that was one of only a few things I am really thankful for from that time was that it allowed me to find this awesome sport! I started with hand-me-downs because my buddy's dad used to play casually back in the 90s, but now I have totally gotten into it, have discs that are perfectly matched to me (the old ones were still good, but the modern ones are so much better in terms of personalizing it to my play style) and even played earlier today to my personal best on one of the local courses. So glad that this sport exists and so thankful for everything that allowed it to be what it is in its current form.

I live outside boise and have been lucky enough to go play caliber in north Idaho. We need more courses like that in the US. My buddies and I are trying to invest in some land together to build a course just like you would a normal golf course because if we are truly going to grow this sport we have to move away from public parks and into private courses. It may take a bit for people to be okay paying 10-20$ for a day pass here but having multiple courses on the same land with a clubhouse and restaurant/bar and a practice area with driving range. Discs rentals as well. I think we are still probably 5 years out on our dream but should have land picked out in the next year to start the process

It should be noted that the old DX plastic is not the same as we have now. When Innova started making pro plastics (like pro, KC pro, XT) they did this by improving the DX plastic, and then they made a new version of DX that is much less durable than the old DX was.
This is why people threw their DX roc's for 20 years or more.

Denying the grip CCDG had (and the template they popularized for post-production) in favor of Jomez is a bit silly. If not for Ian and co and their interactions on the r/discgolf subreddit, post-produced coverage would've been stuck until DPGT tried to do it themselves (poorly).

    • @JacksonOwex
      @JacksonOwex Рік тому

Ignoring the fact that he NEVER said Jomez was the first is a LOT silly! Whether people want to admit, or even like, it or not Jomez IS the channel that most people who watch disc golf know about, from Jomez they will have discovered the multitude of other channels that cover disc golf as well!
If you REALLY want to complain and tell people you think they're silly, tell people in comments of round coverage who are trashing one channel or another that they're silly and they should watch as much coverage as possible because every view helps grow the sport and thereby grow ALL the channels covering the sport!
I don't know when all this tribalism BS started but it's incredibly disheartening to see in... well, it's in EVERYTHING that has competing brands(which is... well, everything)! It's such a STUPID concept!

I didn't know who CCDG was until AFTER I discovered Jomez! I'm guessing many people are likely to say the same thing! Jomez are the ones that REALLY CHANGED THE GAME! It's almost never the first of ANYTHING that has quite the impact of the next of that thing!
-Star Trek was great and people loved it but Star Wars came along and propelled Science Fiction(and what would later come to be known as Science Fantasy(where I would actually put Star Wars as it fits better than Sci-Fi does)) to whole new heights!
-WWE/WWF was not the first professional wrestling company in the US but it damn sure was the first one to REALLY put professional wrestling on prime time TV and go all out like they did!
-I'd take a pretty good guess UFC isn't the first MMA company but it's damn sure the one that propelled MMA to heights never dreamed of!
-There are MANY, MANY, MANY other examples as well but I don't know them all

"It just forced the playoff" never seen someone who claims to be a disc golfer say something like that about The Holy Shot. Anyway you look at it it's the most important shot of the tournament. If James had been in a better position before that shot Paul would have played more aggressively to prevent a potential playoff. Because his lie wasn't good Paul had the smart option to play safe. Which is turn forced the hyper aggressive shot James had to go for. It might not have been the "winning throw" but it's the throw that won the tournament. No question about it.

@@JesseJ588 exactly. If James doesn’t hit that shot, it’s completely over. Dude had to put it in the basket for his only chance at survival, and he does it in front a huge crowd. Getting goosebumps typing this out 😂

@@JesseJ588 I am in no way disputing the significance of the shot. It's just when the narrator says he made the shot to win the tournament is sort of misleading, as it sounds like it was a walk-off shot - which it wasn't.

I think the Prodigy/Buhr lawsuit could have been mentioned....although we don't know the outcome its seems the consensus is this will have effects on ever contract in disc golf going forward

Or it might be settled out of court like most civil cases, but I can see how it could impact the sport going forward. For a video like this, it’s a good thing he didn’t touch it because it would taint the concept with a recency bias.

I would agree with the idea it effects contracts. The just of it is Prodigy just wasn’t thorough enough with their contact stipulations. Maybe they thought they could pull a fast one on Gannon because he’s so young. But his lawyer knew how to negotiate the minor details in his favor.
Long winded I know, but the point is we’re going to see contracts look structured like MLB,NBA, NHL and NFL.

Which is odd because a LOT of guys have moved to other companies since Paul jumped as well, Simon just left DiscMania, Conrad went to... omg I forgot, whatever it happened a couple or so years ago, I believe Ricky changed companies since Paul did too, though I'm less sure about this one!
