Welcome to HEAVY DUTY COLLEGE (HDC). In an effort to preserve and perpetuate Mike Mentzer's legacy and teachings, I am bringing forth whatever audio and video I had in my possession and posting videos on this channel. I have been assisted in this enterprise by John Balik, the ace photographer and publisher of Ironman magazine, who has shared with me photographs that otherwise may never have been seen. The response has been fantastic, as this channel has fashioned a platform where people can learn directly from Mike himself about his life, his bodybuilding and nutritional beliefs and his philosophy. He named his method Heavy Duty, but it was always about more than merely sets and reps. It encompassed knowledge about exercise to build the body, the importance of recovery for the human organism, well-settled nutritional science principles, motivation to tackle difficult obstacles (from getting the most from yourself in an exercise session to facing the challenges that often confront us in life). It also dealt with philosophy, which brought all of these things together, and added considerably more, as learning about how to think critically and independently applies throughout all areas of life. As Mike pointed out, bodybuilding does not exist in a vacuum apart from the rest of the world, and that man is an integrated unit of matter and consciousness.
The HDC logo symbolizes all of this with a subtle nod to the creator of the method in its design. Collegiate letters, such as you would find in universities that seldom make learning as fun as Mike did, in terms of what you can immediately apply in your life.
If you ever read an article or book of Mike’s, if you ever listened to one of his lectures or attended his seminars, you always came away having learned something you didn’t know before. That is real education. You can think of HDC is your alma mater.
