      Chadi, I actually just bought this book because of this video and received it yesterday. It’s a very interesting book! I was going to ask, did master Kano not like newaza, or did he simply just prefer throws? I wonder how good his newaza was?

    I just got finished reading through a book called, "The Toughest Man Who Ever Lived," which is entirely about the life Mitsuyo Maeda, and it is just astonishing to me how many incredible fighters from Japan came from that era! Small men who routinely ran roughshod through very big and well skilled opponents! Real fighters, and true warriors that did so much to promote the art back then. It is very sad to see that so much of Judo and BJJ today are exclusively sport focused, and have mostly lost the self defense/ real fighting aspect that they were built on! It is even more shameful how so few BJJ practitioners know their history, and the masses try to pretend like jujitsu comes from Brazil!!! It doesn't matter how you spell it jiu jitsu, jujitsu, jujutsu, etc... it comes from JAPAN!!! BJJ practitioners like to tell everyone different either because they don't know... or, are being deceitful that "ground fighting" was invented in Brazil by the Gracie's. I guess they never heard of Ne Waza?! Ground fighting was not invented in Brazil! They can say it all they want, but NOTHING is true about this! Japanese invented the "ground fighting," and the overwhelming vast majority of ALL the submissions accredited to BJJ. As far as I'm concerned BJJ, should stand for "Basically Just Judo."
    Personally, I love watching film of Japanese Judo/Jujutsu of this era, and the old Masters doing their thing! I often wonder what the curriculum of the art was like back then, and how much it differs from today.

      That’s true. In fact, when Maeda was teaching Judo, it was called “Kano JuJutsu”. Not “Judo” then. That’s where the Gracie’s got “Jiu-Jitsu” from.

    A modern legend who has done an extensive study of him is Yuki Nakai. Though I'm no longer on Facebook, when I was on it, I noticed that Yuki Nakai posted to a Japanese martial arts historian, Yasuyuki Fujikura, that he was making a close study of SK Uyenishi.

    I really enjoy your channel & the videos you upload. Very informative. I've been training in martial arts since 1973 when I was a kid.
    The vast majority of my training has been in stand up arts such as Karate, TKD & various styles of Kung Fu.
    This past January I decided it was time to empty my cup. Put my black belts aside & become a student again. Once a student, always a student.
    I'm currently training in Danzen Ryu Jujitsu which has elements of various Japanese Jujitsu systems as well as Judo & I'm really enjoying being a beginner once again.

      @anonymous BJJ has it merits but also limitations. I live in Southern California South of LA & to be honest based on my own experiences the kind of people that are likely going to attack you are going to come @ you in numbers so that takes the ground & pound game out of the equation.
      In my own opinion & my opinion is based on all my martial arts training since 1973 & I've seen it all trust me is on the street the best thing to know how to do is throw someone who's trying to attack you as nine out of ten people do not know how to break fall.
      Rolling around on a padded surface is one thing as it has give. A person being slammed to the concrete as the result of a good throw is not going to get back up @ least right away which gives the defender a window of opportunity to get out of the area of danger.

      Yes but you need a reputable school

    • @fennec812
      @fennec812 4 роки тому +1

      Many schools of traditional Jujitsu are still extant. Many schools also generally considered sword schools have a Jujitsu component. You can look up “koryu” to start doing research. While some Koryu (old schools) have made it to the west, the vast majority only continue to exist in Japan. Some are fickle with foreigner participation, too. Having said that, some of these schools are in various states of decay or are trying to open up. Research is vital here, especially if you’re planning to go to Japan to train.

      Judo incorporated many of the techniques that were developed by tanabe and the handa dojo, techniques that were used to defeat the kodokan. One of higher ranked judoka in the west was Ito, who used the stage name of daibutsu, and who's claim to fame was that he once defeated miyake of the handa dojo in high school. These "school boy" duel meets were where a lot of the new newaza was developed. So you may see judo, but you're actually seeing the source of the judo technique
