Sonic 1 Game Gear Speedrun in

- Alright, reached my goal time of sub 16. Happy with this for now, despite some of the dumb mistakes.
Something to note about this run: This game is timed with the convoluted "Real time minus time bonus" method. Due to the huge time bonus, plain real time is simply not an option. Usually in these cases you would use In-Game time, but this game both doesn't have an In-Game timer for Act 3s, but also the strats for hitting the signpost at the end vary for real time and IGT (IGT stops as soon as you hit it, but real time progresses when the signpost stops spinning, so you want to hit it with no speed), so it's forced to use this timing method. As a result, you see the timer paused for a period of time after the level, equivalent to the time bonus length (though it's not exactly lined up, cause I can't split right there and be ready to press the button fast enough for some of the smaller ones) - but I always confirm the total time later with full RTA - total Time Bonus anyway.
Real time: 17:59.7 | Total time bonus: 801,000
Real Time minus Time Bonus = 15:46
Onto the stage comments:
GH1: It's not often that the first level is one of the worst, but here we are. Missed the off screen jump, and just continued anyway. Lost a good 3 seconds as a result.
GH2: Even less common that both the first 2 stages would be bad. Didn't get good crabs, and missed the buzzbomber despawn. Used backups pretty well, but still less than ideal.
GH3: This is a very easy stage, but I still lost a handful of frames on the boss by jumping too early for hit 1.
Bridge 1: Best level of the run by a street, this was insanely good. The box bounce is pretty risky, as you die if you just miss it, and got everything afterwards perfectly. One of the main reasons I'm happy enough with this run.
Bridge 2: Autoscrollers are boring, but there isn't no strats here. Reducing lag and also minimising rings are important. I sadly lost 2 frames to getting too many rings, but not a huge deal.
Bridge 3: Boss on left side =(
Jungle 1: Start here was good, got the best of the options here that I'm going for. End wasn't as good, had a dropped input before the spikes so I look dumb, and then missed the roll-spring at the end.
Jungle 2: Had another dropped input here, and some dicey jumps too. But this level is so up and down, this is better than average for me.
Jungle 3: Good.
Lab 1: Beh, missed the trick here once, really costly. Otherwise good, but ugh.
Lab 2: Surprisingly alright, despite still not getting optimal bubble.
Lab 3: Crazy good. I got the roll-spring here, and commited to going for 5-3, which is really specific. First time I've ever got it in a run.
Scrap Brain 1: Some good doors, some bad doors.
Scrap Brain 2: Felt really dicey the whole time, but actually was pretty standard? Guess I was feeling nervous here, but not later for some reason.
Scrap Brain 3: Made the DUMBEST mistake by jumping too late and hitting the switch, so had to go back and rehit it. Almost hit it a 3rd time which would've been fucking awful, but this was still dumb.
Sky Base 1: Super fucking good. The lightning is on a universal cycle here, so I use a setup to get through the first one at just the right time to keep a good amount of speed. This is about as good as it gets without crazy risky strats.
Sky Base 2: Played a little safe here to make sure I didn't get cannoned, all went good.
Sky Base 3: Also good.

This is amazing, congratulations Werster
Holy Jesus, this run was amazing! Sonic The Hedgehog for the Game Gear is a game that belongs to my bloodline. My grandpa played it, my father plays even to this day, and because of that, I think this WR will someday belong to me 😉. Take care bro!
I love your Pokémon videos btw...
good luck with getting the WR for this game, although that'll be hard
I'm sure a sub 16 speedrun is refreshing after any stadium runs
King of basically everything, Mr. Werthers, coming out with his bi-weekly world record on something. Truly a man we can all learn a few things from.
0:00 Boi he about to do it
18:02 Boi he did it
Bridge Theme best theme
Nobody:
Sonic 1 master system remake: do it in 14 minutes so you can get a squirrel.
Having to slow down to hit the signpost to save real time bothers me. I suggest the even more convoluted IGT real time for act 3's
Anyway sick run of a sick game good shit. Been waiting for this one.
This is Game Gear of the year material.
merci pour la vidéo il y a pas beaucoup de youtuber qui font des vidéo sur les jeux game gear
so many eggman signs buzz
That's amazing. Great work!
Congratz brother
Bridge 1 was just sick lol
What was this run performed on? We used to speed run the first act on the game gear when I was a kid and the method shown here wouldn't have worked. You had to jump on the invincibility bonus, land about ⅓ of the way down the ramp and roll from there to land on the speed bonus on the platform, which would speed you to the end.
Doing what's done here, landing on the invincibility, bouncing and rolling from the top of the ramp would just land you in the spike pit just past the speed bonus.
you just have to hold up and right when going down a ramp and you gain insane speed and you fly through the act
lol nice werster is the runner lol, I googled 'Game Gear Sonic 2 WR speedrun' and I got this. I wanted to see a non TAS Sonic 2, the only one was a TAS on google. I remember Sonic 2 being so hard, I played it more than any other gamegear game, I didn't have any other sonics. I had Lion King (also had Lion King on Floppy DIsc and pretty sure they were the same), Power Rangers and maybe sonic spinball I can't remember anything else, I may have had Sonic 1. I just remember Sonic 2 felt different compared to every other sonic game, the flow of the maps isn't the same, I'm not saying it's a bad thing, change is nice.
Were you manipulating the screen scrolling in act 2, to make it go a little faster? Waiting until it caught up to you, then jumping/running to the right making it scroll further, and a bit faster a tiny boost of scroll speed to keep up, or does that not make any difference?
Awesome run. How do you deal with jumps not coming out during lag?
Was The Green Hill Zone Boss Music Once In A Sonic 1 Sega Genesis Prototype?
God dame your good at this game, good job though!
To me.. This shoulda been called sonic 2 because its basically its own game
was this run on a game gear though? seems to be glitching where mine doesn't glitch, and doesn't have the slow down issues when the screen gets graphic and animation heavy. looks more like an emulator run and the CPU setting in the emulator is set to overclock in order to smooth out the rough slow parts
This run was done on a gamegear emulator
Just a question: Why does it say at 11:32 that you have 9 lives, but before that, you have 12? And at 13:55, you lose your life (when you had 9), but your life counter doesn't go down?
this game only shows 9 lives during stages, but special stages/results can show the actual count.
because of this, you can lose 1 life out of 12 and the game will display the life count as 9.
You done good Werster
Haven't read the F.A.Q. in a while. Why does Werster die in Scrap 2? I assume it's too reset something, but I don't want to go with just guesswork.
He activates a button, and then dies to spawn past a door that was previously lock and now opened
This is R A P T O R S P E E D
That is insane.
I remember when game gear beat the shit out of game boy
Childhood Broken
Hello, how do you record on game gear?
i was curious on why doesn't he just walks trough the question mark at the end of a level, isn't it faster than jumping?
Breaking the question mark by jumping on it is way more faster than spinning it by just walking
Realtime still counts while the sign post is spinning.
wooooooooooooooooooow
wait that death was intentional?
The death in Scrap Brain 2 is intentional yes. The switch you hit just before closes the door behind you, and so if you don't die you have to go all the way around through the level, but the death respawns you right before that at the transporter, so much faster.
I Have This On My 2DS.
SMS version is better
Will werster ever be reinvited to gdq
Now that it's a PC cesspool of corporate asshats using what used to be a basement group of freinds idea to rake in millions? Doubtful.
GDQ is too expensive for him to go to anyway, it costs a couple thousand at least to get there and back from AUS with the price of hotel rooms and stuff.
Is this the beta?
my hight score is 1 524 080 👍🏻. my speed run 19:22 😰
Did anyone else notice that he was pausing the time whenever he got to the score screen?
I’ve never seen a run of the this game before but that usually isn’t the norm for most games.
Just want some clarification on what is up with that.
Read the description for full explanation. Using completely real-time without pauses is dumb because you can actually clear the level slower and actually be faster overall because the time it takes to get the bonus points is shorter at the end.
Not really much of a speedrun if you wait around at the end of the level letting the clock tick down lol.
Which is why he pauses the time and as he also explains in the description, afterwards he goes back and double checks everything to confirm the time.
Thomas H Thanks, I didn’t think about reading the description because I’m dumb.
Why the sounds remind me Link's awakening?
Speed run Pokémon reborn ;)
Rik van der Looij isn’t that the really edgy fangame?
Wdym edgy? It’s not for kids no, if that’s what you mean
He doesn't typically speedrun romhacks or fan games
Emmett H it is a stupid edgy game
Samuel what do you mean stupid? IMO it’s one of the best fan games ever. Not just Pokémon, fan games in general
lol 1:04 he just jumps through the spikes... I die when I do that... cheat run.
