  • Check out my new book that you can pre-order now. Simplify Vegetable Gardening will be available on 16th Feb 2024. Pre-order now to be the first to get a copy of this book that has all my personal tips. geni.us/SimplifyVegGardening I set 30 chicken eggs in a homemade incubator with automatic egg turner after finally sorting out issues at the old site where I keep my chickens, I have now decided to increase the number of chickens I keep back to where they were before all the trouble started.
    In the episode Have I given up keeping poultry video • Have I Given Up Keepin... I said that I would collect chicken eggs for a few days and incubate them in my homemade polystyrene incubator.
    This video was filmed three days later, I have collected 30 chicken eggs that I want to incubate. Out comes the old trusted polystyrene incubator I built years ago and I run you through how I set the chicken eggs in the incubator

  • @MuddyBootz
    @MuddyBootz 6 років тому +4

    A really useful piece of kit to build. Do you spray the eggs a few days before hatching to soften the shell? In my younger days I used to breed canaries and that is something I would do, together with fitting a birdbath for the hen to dampen her feathers. Do you remove the chicks ASAP when they hatch, into an incubator? Would it be possible to set up a time lapse on the hatching date? Nice one mate 😀👍🐥🐥🐥🐥

      My grandad kept chickens,but was a very sparse set up including an old clean mop head to mimic the mother hen and an infra red lamp.I like the idea of a timelapse set up.

      Hiya mate. I dont need to spray the eggs closer to the day due to the humidity being raised to around 90%. I have a video of eggs hatching in this incubator here from a few years ago. ua-cam.com/video/lIjATkstuvs/v-deo.html I will set up a camera, but dont have a timelapse and my camera keeps shutting off after around 15 mins

    With the hole for the fan, do you have a hard time keeping your humidity and temp at the right setting?

    • @simplifygardening

      No because there is no hole the controller and fan block it and there is a plate that seals it off, it does not draw air from outside only moves the air around in the container

    Not sure why you would remove the tray, assuming your talking about the water trays, they help the humidity . I have never moved those and always got a good hatch rate. I just stopped turning them about 4 days till hatch.

    • @simplifygardening
      @simplifygardening  6 років тому

      No Fishmut. not the water trays you need them for the humidity. I was talking about the egg turning tray, you need to remove this so they can not be rotated for last three days and so the chicks can move around unhindered when they hatch

    • @gadfly72
      @gadfly72 6 років тому

      FYI, chickens is either sex / both sexes, adults; chicks is unsexed fluffies, both sexes, before feathering.
      POULTS are young hens, either too young to lay yet, or who don't yet lay full-size eggs. [Pullet egg = the 1st few eggs laid by a young hen, they can be 1/3 to 1/2 the size of a mature-size egg.]
      Typically, U hatch about 50% each sex, so U always have many-more Ms than U need; separating Ms from Fs & even desexing the Ms to reduce aggression & increase growth, is a good idea. Ms will pester hens year-round, & will fight with one another; U can't have more than 1 sexually-mature cock bird, they'll beat the tar out of each other, & upset the whole flock. All that fighting & aggro disturbs everyone.
      Desexed Ms / testes removed are called CAPONS. They won't tread the hens constantly, nor will they fight one another incessantly. Much calmer birds.

    Cross breeding is fine Tony but inbreeding is a bit dodgy. They say that when it goes right it is called line breeding when it does’t it is inbreeding. One of my best crossbreeds is a cuckoo marans x buff Plymouth rock. The cocks are born white so I can dispose of them after hatching.

      sex-linked color in the chicks is great! -
      Being able to sex the chicks reliably & simply is a big help. :--)

      You can set the temp to what ever you like all the way from 0 to 60 degrees c. I have it set at 37.5c for the hens and duck eggs that are currently in it

    Там одно из яйиц синие, почему то?

    • @simplifygardening
      @simplifygardening  6 років тому

      Это из-за породы курицы. некоторые цыплята откладывали белые яйца, закладывали коричневые яйца, а некоторые закладывали зеленые или синие яйца. Это было сделано из креветочной ножки. Надеюсь, что это поможет вам :)
