  • This beginner video tip shows how to force thin sheet into a handy concave shape using physics. The materials I used to demonstrate this were 26 gauge sterling silver sheet, and 14 gauge sterling silver square wire. I use My-T-Flux and hard silver solder. This idea could be applied to so much more than just an interesting band. I enjoy sharing my knowledge with others, as I've taught people for most of my life. This hobby turned into a fun side gig for me for years while I taught public school. I love suggestions and hearing about others' experiences. What is your favorite project? I hit the like button when I walked in! After all, it's YOU!! 🌺🌺🌺 Great trick! A tip I recently realized, using MAUN (British brand) parallel pliers you can put the wire into the jaws and keep going along the wire (to straighten), the pliers have a pass through, very helpful. It's a great way to make a piece light. 👍👍👍

      Really good idea Amanda! That sounds like a fun experiment. My guess would be that the thicker the edge wire you use, the more pronounced the curvature will be. I'm eager to hear the results of your experiment!

    Fantastic work as always Chad, a spinner ring comes to mind. The corners of the wire experience higher stress compared to the flat sides. The uneven stress distribution causes the wire to deform more easily at the corners, leading to twisting. Also torsional forces come into play when oneside is compressed and the other stretched, which is what you described. Take care and have fun!

    Lol thanks for the endorsement of metrics Chad. I follow several jeweller/silversmiths and the American ones (well, those who don’t use metrics anyway ;) )do tend to drive me nuts with their “fractions of an inch” lol. I’m allergic to fractions, and besides,particularly with tiny measurements, mms work SO much better and more accurately. Anyway, thanks for this. I’d never considered this as a way of creating a concave band, but it makes total sense when I see it done. Yet another eye opener 😅 Just as a matter of interest, you spoke a little about the issues of heating pieces being soldered, but do you ever use a charcoal block for soldering? I use mine pretty much all the time, and love the way it helps heat the piece, tho I know they aren’t everyone’s cup of tea.

    • @chadssilversmithing
      @chadssilversmithing  Рік тому

      I've gotten so used to the Solderite pads I use for classes, that I rarely use my charcoal block except for making balls. With spray-on flux, the Solderite pads deteriorate more slowly than the charcoal does, and are cheaper to replace. Thanks Pauline!

    Hi Chad, Thank You for your video's I watch them over and over. What would your idea be on adding a inner band to this ring at the end so it would be straight thru? And I was wondering why I never see you mark your work?

    • @chadssilversmithing
      @chadssilversmithing  Рік тому +1

      Hello Mark. I'm glad you like them! If you did do that, make sure to drill a hole in it so expanding and contracting gasses inside don't do anything weird. I generally mark rings with my initials inside the band, but my .925 stamp was lent out and never returned. Was actually about to order a new one:). I generally don't mark earrings, just because sometimes its hard to find a good place. Bracelets, yes. Pendants, if I can find a spot on them to do it.

    Great video! Thank you for sharing! Is the ring comfortable to wear? Have you tried using half round wire instead of the square? Would it have a similar effect? You've really got my curiosity going.... ;)

    • @chadssilversmithing
      @chadssilversmithing  Рік тому +1

      Hello Cheekylittlefox! I suspect half round would have less of an effect, but I have not tried it. It should be comfortable as long as you round the edges of the square wire a bit. Thanks for the comment!

  • @SP-fy4fx
    @SP-fy4fx Рік тому +1

    Love the video. I'm curious if you could make a spinner ring this way since the ring metal is bending the way you need. The big thing, I would think, would be a way to keep the spinner from attaching to the ring while soldering the ring closed. Yellow ochre? Anything better? Or just easier to make the spinner traditionally with 18 gauge?
    Beautiful ring. Does potential slumping of the 26 gauge start the concave process?

    • @chadssilversmithing
      @chadssilversmithing  Рік тому

      I was actually thinking about that while I was doing it. I think you are right though, and keeping the solder away from the inner band might be a pain. Not sure what you mean by slumping?

    • @chadssilversmithing
      @chadssilversmithing  Рік тому

      If you mean the actual curve, I think the square wire on the edges tries to twist outwards as you bend it into a curve forcing the sheet to curve inward in the middle. I hope I answered your question:)

  • @nikkiscustomdesigns717
    @nikkiscustomdesigns717 Рік тому

    Why do you always make a paper measure before making the band?

    • @chadssilversmithing
      @chadssilversmithing  Рік тому

      Thanks for the good question Nikki. It’s much easier to wrap that around a mandrel and get it snug so you get an accurate measurement. Some thick wires are pretty hard to bend:)
