  • Here is the only recording of TV broadcast of Ilya Kaler performance from the 2d round of the VIII Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow (1986). I recorded it myself on VHS tape which luckily hasn't been lost...My admiration never fades - it remains a phenomenal example of pure violin virtuosity - noble and effortless...

    I studied with Kaler at Indiana University and he changed his elbow grip, leaving it much much lower, very different from this video.

    Wonderful video and amazing playing. The unusual combination maintained through every technical difficulty, of warmth + clarity of sound (when there are many great violinists who favor one or the other) is the unique hallmark of Ilya Kaler, here.

    Come on! Kaler is a master violinist! So much better than those much more PR oriented! Fame absolutely is secondary .. just think of most famous soft drinks which oft have little to do with quality. Eric Shumsky

    Kaler's a good fiddler, but he really wasn't up to the challenge of this Kreisler arrangement of I Palpiti. no upbow staccato, bad left hand pizz, sloppy harmonics, fuzzy fingered octaves. this piece is insanely difficult, and you have to have incredible technique to be able to dominate it and pull it off, but it just wasn't quite there.

      @@bethgutermanchu7069 so i'm not allowed to have an opinion unless i'm a super virtuoso myself? beautiful sound? sure, he has a nice sound, but this particular piece is not primarily about beautiful sound. this piece is about kick-ass technique, and he didn't have it here.

      @@cornel999 Sure you can have your opinion, but why do you think you are entitled to state it publicly without backing it up. Do you have a better performance of this piece for a comparison which was done not in studio settings? Kaler performed it live at the Tchaikovsky competition. He is the only violinist in the world who won gold medals at 3 biggest violin competitions: Paganini, Tchaikovsky and Sibelius. And who are you to judge his playing!!!

    • @cornel999
      @cornel999 2 роки тому +3

      @@irinashelepov8789 there are many superior performances to this particular one - a few examples of *live* performances - Vengerov, Kevin Zhu, Oleksii Semenenko, Fedor Rudin, and others. and who am i to judge? who are you to judge *my* opinion? you couldn't just say "i disagree, i liked this performance"? you have to attack my legitimacy just because you don't agree with my opinion?

    Did he won? Why the Jury is looking Always so arrogant and bored?

    • @Frank-ty5pd
      @Frank-ty5pd 5 місяців тому +6

      BC they's all heard it 5000 times before he was even allowed to enter. His teacher was on the jury (of course). He won, it was inevitable. Plus he was an incredible violinist at that time.
