Great question! It is holding up great. No issues in the build quality. 1) I think a bigger opening or multiple openings would work better. I try to keep a quarter inch mess netting over the opening but in the fall, the leaves can clog the opening quickly. The gold fish also seem to find their way into the box as well at times - no harm to them, but I’d rather they didn’t get in there. Haven’t figured that out yet. 2) this set-up doesn’t adjust well to changing water levels of the pond. During dry spells, the water level can go down leaving the filter useless till I add water or God does. 😃 I’m sure there is a more perfect pool filter design out there, but I’m not in a rush as this system I have is passable, just not perfect. Thx for watching!
Just wondering if we put this straight inside the pond by putting some stones and bringing it to the level where we want it to be… I mean that way we don’t have to create a gasket or anything…. I guess it should work the same way. Correct me if I’m wrong
Hey Joseph, Water is SO pervasive, I think the gasket of Lexan is necessary. You could try tape, but personally, I don’t think it will work long term. I did not just use the Lexan gasket but also used the marine sealant. I think the gasket would also fail w/o the sealant. If you find a different way that works, be sure and let us know in the comments so readers can try other ideas. Thanks for the comment and for watching!
how has this setup worked for you long term? I want to update my goldfish pond but wouldn't you want the pump pulling water from the bottom of the pond?
You just saved me 400$!
Hey bingo,
That is so cool - way to go! We love to hear it - thx for watching too!
Well done man! I have an old roughneck box twice that size I was thinking about using for this, thanks. And thanks for the lead on the pump!
Hey M,
Cool! Sounds like a large project! Have
fun & Thx for watching!
Where is your filter?? All that debris is just going to get pumped right back into the pond or it's going to clog up your pump!
Great ideas thanks
Hey Steve,
Thx for watching
What kinda and what size nuts and bolts did you use?
Hey King…,
Don’t remember exact size, but stainless will limit rust.
Thx for watching!
Great video very informative.
Hey Mike,
Thx for watching!
Great explanation and idea, thanks for explaining and posting this video to help others.
Hey Noel,
Thanks, and thx for watching!
Been 3 years. How's it held up? What would you do differently?

Hey Amit,
If the whole box is going to be under water all the time then that’s is fine. No gasket needed.
Thx for watching.
Would you please share the hardware that was used to bolt the skimmer to the liner. Thanks I’m building this soon! Thanks for sharing.
Hey ABS…,
Lexan - got it at Lowes. Can buy by the sheet. Hope your project goes well!
Thx for watching!
Do you think you would need a gasket if you used seam tape to seal around the opening? I would use duct tape around the hole first to soften the edge.

Is lexan another name for plexiglass? I have some plexiglass on hand and want to use it for making the face plate.
Yes. Lexan is a very strong type of plexiglass.
Thx for watching!
what traps the leaves and debris?
Hey Bass…,
I have a net at the mouth of the skimmer opening.
Thx for watching!
What about a filter net for leaves?
Hey Trista,
I do have small mesh by the entrance. Plus I cover the pond in the fall to eliminate most leaves.
Thx for the comment.

Hey Brody,
It's been working great. Doesn't pull from bottom but skims the top..
Thx for watching!
We’ll done but the way you were holding those tools made my heart jump! Be careful!
Hey Sky,
