Ive done the same thing in my pond, with one difference... I made a big "push net" from the black nylon construction netting you see on the sides of the road during construction projects. Put floats on the top of the netting and weights on the bottom. Then you get a couple guys on each end to drag it through the pond and corral the duckweed to one corner. It makes sucking it out 10 times faster. Only other thing i can add is that your having the duckweed because there is a problem with your water. Order yourself a pondvwater test kit and see where the problem is. Then you can start to add things to your water to actually correct the problem so weeds dont grow at all. Good job and good luck.
Thank you for the advice! I think most of the problem is from the ducks waste and just from my property itself. Between the ducks and the property, the water has a lot of nutrients in it. Testing it is a good idea though. Thanks again!
I’m just a dumb engineer, but I’m an experienced fish keeper and I know that duckweed and other blooms happen because of the fertilizer that washed into this pond. Something else will need to grow to keep up on the supply of nitrates, nitrites, ammonia etc.
Yes I think the majority of the nutrients come from the ducks that live on the pond in the summer plus my property is very fertile in general also. This year I actually dont have any duckweed on the pond tho for some reason.
I've had a similar issue in the past on a 1/4acre pond. I skimmed as much duckweed as I could. I add 80lbs of NaOH and 120 talapia fry. Still good years later.
If you are really worried about the ducks getting in the bucket just roll up some chicken wire and stand it up in the bucket that should keep them out, i assume the bottom of the bucket has a weight in it to keep it upright.
If you put in a small fountain and pump to run it on the other end of the pond, the surface movement between the two running pumps would direct most of that duckweed to the skimmer bucket in a single afternoon.
I would tie some small floats to the sides so it doesnt sink completelly even when full, hole in the bottom small hole, pull wire trough, tie big rock at other end, adjust height and bend the wire inside the bucket, ofc some stronger wire.
I love duckweed the thicker the better, the only reason to remove it would be if there was a market for it! Keeps the water clean, and provides habitat and food for fish slowly move a Texas rig across it and LMB goes nuts
Duckweed is a great nitrifying plant. It looks unsightly so totally understandable why you want it out. Would you ever consider stocking 1 common carp or koi? They would demolish that stuff off permanently
Pretty nice setup! I'd suggest adding a skimmer top to your bucket so you can set the bucket an inch or two below the water and let the skimmer regulate the amount of water coming in, so your pump doesnt over-run the water. Like this... ua-cam.com/users/shortsHeuY4HItgLc

Yes… is there a way to take care of the cause so you don’t get driven crazy?

Thats a really good idea!
We are from India, this happened a lot in our pound, we liked your idea very much, thank you sir, we also did it by making it
My 2 hungry water turtles would eat through that in a few weeks

So the important bit. How do you separate the weed from the water so the water can be returned to the pond?
@@markchester7584 I show that at the end of the video
I run the hose into my tall grass and the grass acts like a screen.
Thank you very much 👍
Pool noodles to shim and concentrate duckweed.
You know it has more protein per once than soybeans.
I did not know that.
@@danieljckson
They farm it in India I believe
6 times more protein.
Per once? Is a once nearly the same as an ounce?

No it is a smidgen les

Can you tell me: dn of pump 50mm or 80 ( 2 inch or 3 inch)
Its a 2” pump

I am in Alaska and Koi or Carp won't survive unfortunately
As long as the pond doesn’t freeze solid, and you put a small fountain pump in to keep a tiny surface hole, they should survive.
Just pump it into your neighbors pond. The one you don't like!

Please don't put "right height" and "bucket" in the same sentence, thanks. 🐴
