I landed there 1971, when there was no control tower, just a jeep with radion I remember peoples standing on th roadway, cars as well watching us land!

The Barra Airport in Scottland is not the only airport in the world using a beach as runway. There also is Frazer Island in Australia.
Many of these airports are not at all dangerous; they simply have short runways. Either your plane is able to land/takeoff from that length, or it isn't. No diff than any other airport/airplane decision. And, yes, obviously one has to do it right, and one has to make a good decision about whether it is do-able or not....the same decisions made with every takeoff/landing.
In Rio de Janeiro we use this airport only for national flights, but there is the Galeão international airport
Nepal runway has an interesting overrun.....straight down.
I don’t understand how the hell there is still sand on the beach in St. Martin Unless the high tide returns it.
I actually think the beach is gone because of some floods and there is only the road and behind it the sea.
Of course my Madeira Airport is on the list :)

Boris Sheen I do not recall the phographers name, but MADERIA, I have seen 4 missed approaches, until pilot went elsewhere, CARGOSPOTTER. does DÜSSELDORF DE, Zwhrre like MADERIA , is ONLY 1 RUNWAY, see A380 crabbing into the wind , I only saw 1 missed approach, by an A380, CHEERS FROM NJ... USA🇵🇹. 🇺🇸

Madeira is so worth the thrilling landing
Look at Boracay caticalan, very short, Cebu Pacific and Philippines airlines fly in and out daily.
Pause the video at 2:17.... is the landing gear not fully deployed/out yet!? That’s insane!!! The runway is like right there! shouldn’t the wheels/tires be ready to go? ... btw I know absolutely nothing about aviation so please feel free to correct me or give me some insight! Thanks!
Noticed. Definitely late deployment though but the gears will totally open up by touchdown. Otherwise this might be serious, bent at that angle not totally deployed and they will instantly tear off from the sheer pressure.

I have lnded at skiathos airport before. It is very scary landing though!
I have also landed at Madeira airport. Just like skiathos, it was very scary in landings due to high gusts of wind.

landing that low at st martins is very.dangerous due to the fence, on this video one such plane only just cleared it, its amazing there has been no crashes due to this.
San Diego Intl' (Lindberg Field) is the largest single runway major airport. No room for expansion. Landing path is over high rises and a major freeway (5). The few Jumbo jets that fly in often have to "go around" if the approach is not just right. See "British Airways landing in San Diego"...GREAT plane spotting...

4:30 there is also an official airport in Washington State that uses a pacific coast beach as a runway.

Unst in the Shetlnds, Dehavilland dash 7 in the eighties nd nineties in and out from Aberdeen for 8 years.
Some great landings there, Brymon airways on contract to Chevron.
What a short runway that was, landing bothered me more than take off there.
The Dash 7 is ideal for short roads.

Most of them are small airports with low passenger capacity. You didn't count for ex. Tegucigalpa airport of Honduras which is really dangerous for landings as the approach time is too limited.

I landed at Madeira airport once, and the poor pilot had to attempt landing 5 times before he eventually managed it.

the liar king we got jet blast(luckily I was in the van) but because the plane turned instead of going straight.My supervisor on the other hand was outside and had to hold on tight to a tug 😭😭

The Congonhas airport (CGH) in São Paulo is very dangerous. Short runway, 34 landings and take offs per hour, big city and tall buildings around! I try to pick a flight landing in Guarulhos (GRU) everytime I go to São Paulo!

Madeira Airport Airport (Portugal) will not have to worry about global warming with the sea rising for sure.
With St. Martin, I'm not sure that's a great spot for a beach and vacation resort, unless you really like a beach and resort that's always loud and exciting, but with the loud and exciting part not being music and partying, but instead huge jets flying 50 feet over your head with the huge gusts of wind from them.
Same for Skiathos in Greece!
Skiathos JSI is not the most difficult airport in Greece. You should check Kastelorizo KZS , Samos SMI, Milos MLO , Leros LRS, Kalymnos JKL, Kassos JKS...
In my opinion the old Hong Kong airport is far most dangerous and strangest airport.
To funny I had a few flights in there. Remember having to aim for the checkered hillside and then crabbing low over the buildings. Then stomping a pedal at the last second to line up.

On the Pacific ocean to the Oahu airport there are some very low fliers.
So I guest what you are saying is if you are on an island, up a mountain or in the sea, your runway is going to be short - who knew?

IIRC, there are a couple of airports that have railway tracks crossing the runway.
The short ones were for smaller planes not big ones get that right why a long runway for a small plane? It would be useless and the length was long enough for it to take off

SDU is Santos Dumont.
Saba is technically a "closed" runway (see the "X" on each end of the runway?). Only a couple of airlines are granted special exemptions by the local authorities to fly into and out of Saba.
For Gibraltar, why don't they make a tunnel under the runway

Pete j Nope. It pivots on contact, so doesnt absorb any force through that mechanism. Its all to do with the geometry when folding away, so it fits into the wheel wells. Theres a clip from Mentour Pilot on here that explains it well.

I went to skiathos for a tennis holiday. Was totally unaware of the runway. Was sitting in the back of the plane and on landing I could see the masts of the sailboats at anchor at eye level. Or it seemed that way!
