  • Just south of #Simlångsdalen lies a #hidden #gem - #Danska #Fall. This #nature reserve boasts an array of stunning landscapes, from old beech forests to mountain slopes, well-worn footpaths, and open fields. But the real #showstopper is the #waterfall that draws crowds from far and wide. A hiking trail winds through the picturesque beech forest, while the #Hallandsleden trail runs through the reserve.
Surrounded on three sides by water, the area is truly #breathtaking. To the north lies #Brearedsjön, to the east the #watercourse #Assman, and to the west #Skällåssjön with a stream leading to #Brearedssjön. The most dramatic section along the Assman is the fall that gave the reserve its name - Danska Fall.
During snowmelt and other periods of high water, the fall offers a roaring spectacle as the masses of water find their way down the cracks in the bedrock. The fall height from Danska Fall to the estuary a few hundred meters away is an impressive 36 meters, with the river forming several beautiful rapids and falls along the way.
The terrain is hilly, but there is a marked loop that takes visitors on a 2.3 km #trail around the reserve. For those who just want to see the falls, the distance is only 1 km. The orange-marked Hallandsleden trail runs through the reserve, leading south to the nature reserve Gårdshult and north to the community of Simlångsdalen and further up the valley with more nature reserves to explore.
The #forest in Danska Fall has been left untouched for a long time, making it a haven for small insects, birds, #mushrooms, #lichens, and mosses. The forest thins itself and has some blazes and tall stumps that are loved by woodpeckers. The animal and plant life is rich, with interesting species from several different groups of organisms, including lichens, mosses, vascular plants, fungi, aquatic insects, fish, and birds. The beech trees are home to a rich growth flora of red-listed and unusual lichens such as small meadow lichen and mussel lichen. Lesser flycatchers and terns can be found in the area, while in Assman's rapids, the starling can be seen running around on the rocks. Trout also thrive in the river, benefiting from the rich bottom fauna.
If you explore Danska Fall, you'll get a glimpse of how Halland's interior has looked over the centuries. Unlike the areas closer to the coast, nature at Danska Fall has remained relatively unchanged since the Middle Ages and perhaps even further back.
The name Danska Fall has ancient origins and is linked to the #Scanian #War #fought #between #Denmark and #Sweden during the second half of the 1670s. The story goes that a group of the defeated #Danish army fled upstream #Fylleån after the defeat at #Fyllebro in 1676. They hid in the woods around the fall, but the Swedes were on their heels and chased the Danes out on a poorly built bridge over the river. The bridge broke, and several Danes fell down and drowned in the rushing water.
