  • Welcome to Chiavari Italy. This travel vlog visits the Italian Riviera of Liguria Italy. Get an immersive experience in one of the best kept secrets near Genoa. Chiavari Italy is a a non-touristy stop between Cinque Terre and Portofino. Come with our travel vlog to the beach, farmer’s market, restaurants and food shops of Chiavari, an old-school town full of local charm. Near Genoa, Chiavari is called the city of porticos and was once an important capitol during Napolean’s time. This travel guide gives you a glimpse at Chiavari’s world-famous artisan woodwork at the antique market. Don’t miss Chiavari, an instagram destination on the turquoise Riviera of Italy.
If you’re looking for best things to do on the Italy Riviera, Chiavari has an absolutely charming historical center complete with a palace, walking arcades, beautiful squares, and a wonderful food scene. Chiavari, near Genoa, Portofino and Cinque Terre is off the tourist track, has an authentic vibe.
The road into Chiavari Italy ends at the cathedral. From the cathedral, a lush park leads to the train station and the beach where a pretty beach promenade provides views of the Tigullio bay. From the beach promenade you can see Portofino and Santa Margherita Ligure in one direction and the rugged cliffs to Cinque Terre in the other. Chiavari’s spot on the Liguria coast makes it an easy choice when you’re looking for top things to do near Genoa, Portofino, and Cinque Terre.
After the beach, follow us into the criss-cross of narrow alleys and porticos of the historic center, where we walk from the Cathedral along the walls of the community palace to Piazza Mazzini where the daily morning market is underway.
From the market you can dive into Chiavari’s wonderful arcades or porticos in any direction. We’re going to take you to a few of our favorite places and favorite experiences.
    CHEESE SHOP
THE BEST Gianluca Ratto & Mario Foppiano
This cheese shop offers over 300 local cheeses from Liguria and the Italy’s Riviera.
    PASTICCERIA COPELLO 1826
Here is an absolute treasure chest of sweets, where Liguria bakers make chestnut candies and cakes in the fall, chocolates and candy canes in the winter, and sweet crackers called Chiacchiere for Carnival.
    LUCHIN 1907
You can’t come to Chiavari without experiencing Luchin, who after 100 years still offers a daily menu of only a few, simple dishes, including the Farinata chickpea pancake. If you come here, come early when they open at noon.
    GRAND CAFE DEFILLA 1900
On the corner of piazza Garabaldi, DeFilla is a bustling institution that’s still one of the most popular places for a relaxed get-together. At Defilla’s enoteca the wine collection is one of the most comprehensive near Genoa on the Liguria Riviera.
    PANIFICIO RAFFO GINO
After the beach, tuck under the portico to Panificio Raffo Gino for Torta Pasqualina or Easter cake.
    VIA DEI REMOLARI
Not all of Chiavari’s traditional shops have stood the test of time. The oar-makers alley is quiet, no longer making oars for the wooden fishing boats of the Liguria Riviera coast.
    ANTIQUE MARKET
Here you might also spot Chiavari’s most famous handcraft of all - the Chiavari chair.
Stay with us for an easy Pesto recipe from our expert at the farmer’s market.

The fascist colony was then renewed in mid '10s and around 2018 was opened again and now it truly looks beautiful. What was once a school and a leisure place is now full of offices and even apartments (but try to get one if you dare! Very expensive!) The whole area has undergone a tremendous renewal and has now lost every hint of decay (in the '80s/'90s/'00s was very different)

If you had to choose a permanent residency, would it be Chiavari or Conversano?

    • @happygoluckytravel
      @happygoluckytravel  7 днів тому

Thank you for watching! As slow travelers we typically stay in a destination for a month or two and look for authenticity. For this, if forced to choose, we would pick Chiavari because its slightly bigger and we love the sea but also to hike, which Liguria's mountains offer us. For permanent residency, more practical things come into play depending on each person. We'd want to be very near a well connected airport and a great hospital. On these factors, both locations are a little challenging.😀

Colonia Fara in Chiavari, Italy. The tower was built in the nineteen-thirties to plans by engineer Camillo Nardi Greco (1887-1968) in collaboration with architect Lorenzo Castello. Inaugurated in 1935, the building was originally a holiday camp for 400 children on the Tigullio Gulf, consisting of two volumes: a lower, horizontal volume totalling 1300 square metres, with a rounded vertical volume towering 49 metres above it.
After its brief service as a holiday camp, Torre Fara was renovated after the war for a variety of different uses, but despite its truly unique position with sea views extending from Portofino to Punta Manara, it had been abandoned since the nineteen-eighties.
It took years to achieve the result we may admire today, under the supervision of the Superintendency for Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape of the Region of Liguria, which oversaw the choice of colours, the restoration and the completion of the aeropaintings that ornamented the original structure. The renovation project has a long and troubled history, including a number of failed attempts to auction off the building, squatting, and repeated failure to form a group of enterprises to purchase the property, but it finally came to a happy ending when the city of Chiavari approved a proposal put forward by a private group of five entrepreneurs from the Tigullio Gulf area. The group invested almost 30 million euro in the project, with positive repercussions for the local economy, as all the work was performed by local enterprises, creating jobs and preferring materials sourced within the region. The work was performed to plans by architect Enrico Pinna of Pinna Viardo Architetti, a Genoese studio known for its reclamation projects on modern buildings, with architect Sonja Serventi and surveyor Alessio Gotelli of Chiavari.
The project represents a socially sustainable choice, going beyond restoration of the building with a plan for reclamation and renewal of the waterfront promenade on Via Preli, also by architect Enrico Pinna, creating a barrier-free walkway along the sea for the local population. While the work was still underway, Società Fara, the company set up to supervise the project, organised three events for local citizens, including the 2018 Le giornate futuriste alla Fara (Futurist Days at the Fara), to share their goals and their experiences on the construction site with the public; after all, the tower is a sort of urban totem for the people of Chiavari, “a lay cathedral and focus of attention”, as Enrico Pinna points out.
Redevelopment of the Colonia Fara has given this work of Futurist architecture a new lease on life. The ground floor and the first floor now contain the Grand Hotel Torre Fara, including a spa, restaurant and bar with outdoor seating in the garden. The building’s remaining nine floors contain 18 apartments, a maximum of two per floor, as required by the Superintendency.
Talking to the architects, to supervisor of works Alessio Gotelli and to site supervisor Enrico Basso, it is clear how much loving care went into the restoration project. Beginning with historical materials in their original locations, such as slate and travertine, the thick ‘cocciopesto’ finish on the façade, and down to original vintage furniture restored and supplied by Atelier Costa, or the new pergolas on the terraces, mediating between the building and the landscape in the best tradition of the Modernist movement. But this would not be a truly Futurist project without a focus on the future of the technical details: an essential choice for environmental sustainability, achieved by adding a geothermal system that makes Torre Fara a fossil fuel-free building, new generation home automation systems and insulation that does not affect its appearance, earning the building classification in energy class A: a rarity for a reclaimed 80-year-old Rationalist building, which can now be enjoyed in all its splendour, also in the shots taken by architecture photographer Gianluca Giordano.
