    Has anyone ever pointed out to these kids that even doctors aren't allowed to diagnose themselves? Literally doctors need other doctors to tell them whats wrong with them because of confirmation bias. "Self diagnoses" aren't valid no matter how educated you are.

      I mean, not even doctors can properly diagnose people 100% of the time either. But yeah its needed to see the "off-time" behaviors just as reading the answers to questions and other tests. The less a person knows about what "makes it adhd" for example. The better results. So its literally easier to see in others if they are possibly nerodivergent rather than seeing it within yourself. Because it's not like you got something to compare to :P

    When I was younger, I took a psych class and one of the first things the professor said was to not diagnose yourself, friends, or family because you're too close to get a strong sense of what an issue could be and the information is so fresh in your head, that you'll try to apply it to other people. And obviously we were students, so duh, but point still stands

      My sister in law had “not getting X, Y, and Z” as her “trauma” when she claimed to have “PTSD” a couple years ago. I’m glad she grew up, but it was very annoying for a while, since she watched me struggle with the immediate aftermath of abuse and thought it was “cool” that I had a diagnosis. It was mimicry while I suffered and overcame obstacles. She just thought it was the coolest thing to fake illness.

    Funnily enough I had a co worker that claimed to have autism, and each time she was caught slacking off, doing a task poorly, over all being a shitty person let alone employee she would blame it on the autism and demanding special treatment based on it.
    The catch being I was her manager and officially diagnosed with ASD with the paper work to back it up so that shit did not fly with me. The other managers let me handle her as I was technically the only one who she couldn't cry discrimination to HR when she would be told off and it didn't help she didn't provide any documentation backing up her "autism" for the special accommodation the company provides so as far as the company was aware she wasn't in any special groups to begin with.
    She quit a month in once she realised she's not getting her way and would actually have to work.
    Her autism symptoms she proudly would proclaim that made her autistic were walking on her tippy toes, nail biting (very unsanitary as we handle food) and head twitches.
    Jesus I wanted to beat her ass.

      I just put my head down and get to work, if I make a mistake it’s “I’m sorry”, people with actual disorders try and actually deal with it instead of being lazy and blaming it on the disorder making them feel shitty, yeah working isn’t that fun, mentally prepare if they have to, but that person sounds like they just don’t wanna feel bad after people tell them to be a decent person, consider every other person pushing through what they have to deal even if it gets to them eventually, not just going “my disorder” instead of just saying sorry and moving on.

      Im not going to self diagnose, but I have been told by many people that I may have autism because of how I act in public, a lot of my close family members and siblings have autism, so I have a higher chance of having it and I dont care to get tested because at this point it doesnt really affect me, the first person to ask if I have autism was a dishwasher at my first job who had aspergers, he never blamed autism for lack of work and he was always at work. I dont know why people online promote autism as a happy disorder "look at me wave my hands and squeal on camera its so cute". they never discuss the serious parts. For example, my sister has low functioning, she doesnt understand social cues, gets mad easily, she cant tie her shoes at the age of 18, nor can she do basic hygiene. The tantrums she throws, when something doesnt go right she gets angry, even if its just a minor thing. Its not just some "oh look at me walk on my toes, bite my nails, and act all cutesy over some toys" its sick

    Dude I found someone who was genuinely sick on TikTok once and it was upsetting. One of those random ones that had like 4 views. There was something wrong. In her dark house, just sort of talking at the camera and moving around strange. She was emaciated and looked like she hadn't showered in weeks. It wasn't for views, none of her videos had any. it wasn't acting and it was very sad. I have no idea what it could've been, just not right. That's what severe mental illness looks like, not fun anime cosplay.

      Haha! ADHD doesn't give you tics, which is what the gal in the video was saying they are. We (we being those with ADHD, and those with autism as well) self-stimulate (aka stimming) and don't really think about it. It's not completely involuntary like tics are. I feel the urge to do it, but it's not like it'll hurt if I don't, I just do it impulsively.

    It's almost insulting how stupid the things they said are signs of adult autism are, I'm 41 diagnosed at about 35 before that my family always just thought I was a bit strange with a learning disability only after my son was found to have autism and be very high on the spectrum was it found that I am also on it. I don't do stupid crap just a bit hyper fixated on things sometimes and I can live a relatively normal life.

      This is actually the reason why a lot of kids toe walk. Ur right. Nothing to do with the brain. Same thing happened to one of my neighbors kids. He got surgery for it and trust me he's the most typical guy to exist 😂

    • @miclovesart
      @miclovesart 5 місяців тому +1

      My mom is a sped teacher. She always tells the parents of toe-walkers to take their kids to a specialist to first rule out Achilles tendon issues, and if they don’t present any issues with their tendons, then they should take them to a specialist for autism (because autism can also cause toe walking). Two years ago she had a kiddo with severe Achilles tendon issues. She told the parents what to do, and by the end of the year his heels were almost touching the ground! It was a huge improvement from the extreme toe walking he was doing before! I guess this is a lesson that multiple things can cause one issue, so assumptions should not be made until there is more evidence.

    Unpopular opinion (possibly):
    It's okay to question your mental health and question if you have a mental health disorder. That is when you should talk to a therapist or a professional about these types of things and see if you actually do or do not. What's not okay is to say you do without a diagnosis from a therapist/professional.

    • @titanomachy2217
      @titanomachy2217 Рік тому

      I'd say this is bad advice. Nine times out of ten, getting a diagnosis of a mental disorder becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Go to a shrink, and they WILL diagnose you with something, even if you are perfectly normal. As time goes on, more and more normal emotions and experiences are being pathologized. Nobody can even define half of the disorders in the DSM-V in an internally consistent manner. Like take the "autism spectrum": shrinks literally lump in mentally retarded people who are non-verbal and constantly bashing their heads against the wall and stuff like that with "high functioning autism" which only has one consistent symptom: social awkwardness. How is that a "spectrum" anyways? And most of the time, the awkwardness is just present as a minor, all of the adults I have ever known that SAID they had autism struck me as totally indistinguishable from a normal person.
      My advice to any young person encountering Wikipedia pages or whatever about all sorts of mental illnesses and trying to find the one that fits you like I did as a teen is just STOP, and go do something else. Going down that rabbit hole of diagnosing yourself or getting put on psychoactive, addictive drugs by a shrink like I did is disastrously negative, most of the time. You have to have some serious problems before going to a shrink becomes actually necessary or helpful. Most people in the West are over-diagnosed, pathologizing unpleasant parts of the normal human experience. My advice to young people who feel there is something wrong with them is "There probably isn't. If there were, other people would notice and tell you." Because most of us keep our "weird" thoughts and feelings to ourselves, most of us don't realize how normal we actually are...I found that out while robotripping with some friends as a teen, we all started spilling our guts to one another about our deepest secrets and memories and stuff, it was cathartic to realize that all that self-consciousness and insecurity is normal. Honestly, I think having close friendships and connections with family is significantly more therapeutic than talk therapy or drugs will ever be for most people. Sure, there are those who are genuinely fucked in the head, people that need anti-psychotics to keep from losing it, but you'd find out if you were like that, it wouldn't be something you could fly under the radar with, so I figure if you're the only one worried that you have a disorder, it's probably just hypochondria. My brother was always a bit of a hypochondriac growing up, anytime he heard about something he would ask our medical professional parents if he had it, and my mom would always reassure him that he was fine. A diagnosis can really easily become a monkey on your back, especially if you are diagnosed with clinical depression, which it is hard NOT to get diagnosed with as a Westerner in the postmodern age if you go to see a shrink. Depression is the norm, because our society is utterly atomizing and soul-crushing. There is nothing wrong with most people, they are just reacting to an unhealthy society, but shrinks blame the neurochemistry of the individual's brain instead. SSRIs work no better than sugar pills, and make people more likely to end it because they will think "I've been taking these pills for months and I still feel miserable, I must just be miserable by nature and there's nothing I can do about it, may as well kick the bucket." I found that my life really turned around when I stopped thinking of myself as depressed, as it really shapes your self-perception, and gets you into the habit of being dour and down on yourself. It feels like you have a lot more control over the way you feel if you tell yourself you are just a normal person, capable of happiness like anyone else, not someone that is doomed to always feel sad unless they take the right sort of pills. I think the people that have been supposedly helped by these pills probably just improved their own attitude through the power of suggestion.

      I reckon this isn't that unpopular, there's also a variety of levels to mental health issues, especially in less complex ones like anxiety or depression. It's important to be seen by a professional and while medical negligence is a very real thing, deciding you have a mental illness and not even trying to take the steps and fight the fight to get a diagnosis is not an option.
      Especially when you parade yourself on social media making it your whole personality and being obnoxiously proud of how mentally unwell you are.

    adhd can cause tics, but they arent tourettes. Something i remember is “you can have tics and not tourettes, but you cant have tourettes without tics”
    adhd can cause tics that are very minor like eye blinking or head twitching just due to how the brain misfires
    anxiety can also cause tics
    however the girl in 5:50 is more describing stims that you can have with adhd, which is usually done without realising it, in an attempt to get the brain to focus or slow down, which i think she misunderstood the difference between tics and stims, unless she didnt and shes just trying to be “silly” :3

    Walking on tip toes is absolutely one of the factors used to diagnose children with ASD but its not exclusive to autistic people.

    • @louderthanwordsInclusivity
      @louderthanwordsInclusivity Рік тому +2

      Toe walking to an atypical degree is one of thousands of possible symptoms, or sensory/rr behaviors that can signify that RR and sensory behaviors are present under this symptomatic criteria Category.
      The problem is that as you said, it is a symptom Of something else, sensory processing issues. And while yes they are present in Autism, sometimes to a higher severity than many other disorders or sensory issues alone, this can be present with ADHD, Tourette’s, Alzheimer’s, even one disorder, just Severe Sensory processing issues, which don’t always need a disorder along with it to cause it.
      The problem is that toe walking alone is not enough to be a factor, It HAS to be toe walking to a degree that it becomes atypical, and many of the “Tiktok Autistics” don’t realize this, or they think they can alter these things because, “Neurotypical white men wrote the DSM5 so since I decided I’m autistic I can rewrite it.”
      If someone shows enough symptoms which specify atypical behaviors of a specific kind and category, under both RR, and SC, while meeting the other 3 requirements, then they could be diagnosed with autism, ONLY if it impacts them to a level that impacts functioning. This is a requirement for being considered to have autism, Or even for being considered disabled.

    • @miclovesart
      @miclovesart 5 місяців тому

      You are 100% right! My mom is a sped teacher. She works with a lot of autistic kiddos that are on the more severe side of the spectrum. The toe walking is something she always tells the parents they should see a doctor for. First, rule out tendon issues by going to a specialist, then look at other possible causes such as autism. I don’t think she’s ever come across a case where the toe walking couldn’t be explained by either tendon issues or autism!
      EDIT: obviously I mean constant toe walking. If you do it every once in a while, it is likely that nothing is wrong.

    19:05 even the second one is full of red flags to anyone on the medical field. First off she decided the disorder and THEN researched it? That's not how you get a diagnosis, that's how you confirm your bias. There were plenty of other issues too, like researching only that one disorder, thinking one month of study is anywhere near enough, using the dsm5 as a checklist, etc
    Not that I believe most people do all that, but all that still doesn't lead you anywhere near a valid diagnosis
    Self diagnose isn't valid even from a doctor, specialist in the field. Doctors are very aware of the bias and issues that come from that. Imagine a radom high-schooler

    I am a diagnosed autistic but I don’t do most of what that bloke says autistic adults do. I think people sometimes forget that autism is a spectrum. I am diagnosed as a high functioning autistic person. This means that I can communicate well and can be independent to a certain point. I still have some traits of a neurodivergent person as I do sim, find loud noises and flashing lights overwhelming and other things as well.
    People need to stop putting a typical type onto the diagnosis as one does not exist. We are all different

  • @DrHenryAuD

    17:47 If medical professionals can’t diagnosis themselves with neurological conditions, then kids on tiktok definitely can’t self diagnose autism, ADHD, etc.
    You are unable to be objective when looking at your own symptoms. If you go into it thinking that you have something (autism, etc) you will cherry pick the few select symptoms and hyper focus on that diagnosis without considering other things.
    The reason why you have to go to a medical professional to get that kind of diagnosis is because, first, we go to school for 8+ years to learn about the subject, and second, we don’t know you so we are able to be objective when looking at the presenting symptoms. This is why we can’t even see our family members as patients because we can’t be objective with them.
    Source: I’m autistic and was diagnosed 10+ years ago by a medical professional. Additionally, I have my doctorate and see patients to diagnosis and treat disorders of hearing and balance, but I can’t see myself as my own patient or my family members as patients because of the inability to be objective.
    I don’t think I articulated this very well, but this shit really pisses me off. Being autistic is not fun and quirky 😜 it can be debilitating

    Medically, yes, of course people can have both Tourettes and Huntingtons disease. Most of the time, the symptoms of Huntingtons disease will show after the age of 40. It's a genetic condition. Tourettes is a neurological disorder that might have a genetic component, but is not directly relatrd to a specific gene and most of the time first symptoma of Tourettes will show before your 30s. So yes. It's possible to have both.

    As an officially diagnosed Autistic, Imma going to do a checklist:
    T-rex arms... Okay... Great start (not)... No
    Rubbing face and eyes? Does he have an allergy?
    Toe walking? Uhhh... Does that go with the T-rex arms?
    I'll give him the "special topics of interest" a.k.a. Obessions + Hyperfocus on projects or hobbies - Right now, mine is Vergil from Devil May Cry - Well, since 2005. Plus, I'm really into AI-based projects at the moment.
    Flapping hands when excited? Isn't that what girls on TV do when they get asked to a prom, or something...
    Difficulty making eye contact? Definitely.
    Disassociation? I'm not sure if it's totally an Autistic trait, but yeah. I do that. It's got worse since my Mum passed away.
    Collecting items? Yes - But that's mostly based around current obsessions.
    I never "self-diagnosed", because I never thought/dreamed that it was something that I could have (not that I wanted it). It was during an appointment with my Mum (and talking with her about it), the doctor referred me to a psychologist. Although I did cringe when that girl said "disabled". I don't know if it's my denial about my diagnosis, but I've never classed myself as that.
    Having said that. Before the Autism diagnosis, they thought I had Psychosis - And one of the symptoms of that is delusion... *cough*TikTok*cough* Something that I didn't have.
    As for gaming, I'm between Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition (as Dante) and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge.

      A lot of the "looking like a clown" is coming from them wanting to be different, as someone who dyes my hair an intense colour every few weeks and admittedly sometimes dresses like a clown, it is often the strive to stand out and be noticed, attention feels great so the more attention they get the happier they are (it's also why a lot of them fake mental illness) when everyone trying to get attention for their intense looks gets the same amount of attention some of them will go out of their way for more attention. to be bigger and more noticed, this causes some to fake illness and be the bright clowns we see here. (I personally dress like a clown sometimes because I like them and love bright colours but I also like the compliments I get for it)

    People really share these tik toys on how they “found out about autism, researched it for months, compared the diagnostic criteria to their symptoms, and self diagnosed accurately because of this”, really think they did something there, as if confirmation bias isn’t a thing, as if you don’t have to know about ALL mental health issues and diagnosis and how they overlap to accurately diagnose someone, not just ONE that you like or want to be the cause, and even proffessionals don’t diagnose themselves, due to confirmation bias, and the need for an unbiased outside perspective on the symptom presentation.
    They really think saying “I liked autism and researched Tf out of it, so there’s no way I’m wrong” holds weight

I post generally normal things like my dog or food I think turned out well like any other person would. We're not crazy weirdos with all these uncontrollable traits. Over time you can learn to live with being on the spectrum and can eventually adjust very well to have an "average" functional life where you're comfortable and actually happy and independent. It got so bad that the Drs told his parents to "put him in cowboy boots" to "force him to walk right" and he freaking STRUGGLED, but eventually walked "normal"..........................he was diagnosed as Autistic in his late teens and honestly I feel bad because had he been diagnosed early he would have probably had a better experience at school by being put with his peer group, but who knows. I think he is married with a kid now so I guess he turned out "alright", that just always bothered me and if a kid genuinely NEVER STOPS the toe walking thing, Id def push to get them checked out. (but these kids on tiktok probably just do it when its convenient)

  • @noway3119
    @noway3119 4 місяці тому +1

    Toe walking is a sign of autism. Does not mean everyone who does has autism. But it is literally a sign that someone might. Special interests are too. Usually that means we can go on for hours, having a hard time understanding when to stop because we get so excited and lack the ability to properly read others. Self diagnosis is sometimes needed as the diagnostic criteria was made based off cis men but afab have different symptoms. That doesn’t mean everyone in these videos aren’t exaggerating or faking. Self diagnosis isn’t always a bad thing. Not everyone has access or money to health care let alone mental health care- especially in the US. If you have undiagnosed autism and aren’t somewhat accommodating yourself or letting people around you know about what accommodations you need- it’s so painful. In fact- I tried to off myself 5+ times in middle school due to how being, what I now know, autistic made me act and feel without accommodations+ how people treated me

    Especially the last one is dangerous. Of course you can invest a lot of time in doing research, however, you should be going to the doctor who is a MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL and who knows diagnoses that have similar symptoms. For example, dissociation, yes, this can be an autistic symptom, but it can also be one of depression, PTSD, DID and so on. A medical professional is the only one who can determine whether you've actually got something or something ELSE. A lot of the times, people try to fit into diagnoses instead of finding themselves in it. Surely, it's good when you try to reflect on yourself and your behavior, but ultimately, only a doctor can diagnose you, not yourself. The conclusion the girl at the end should've made is "I think I am autistic" or "I could be autistic". But, being in a mental state where it's already set to you that you've definitely got this diagnosis is super dangerous because it could lead to misdiagnoses.

AND MY APPOINTMENTS WERE ONLINE. distance isnt a factor anymore when so many professionals offer online appointments especially for disorders where its known people struggle with public spaces or meeting new people.

Autism girl says all of her experiences aligned with every single point is wrong, autism isnt all symptoms and you have it, some people have high functioning autism and only have maybe 4 or 5 symptoms of it. If you have all symptoms then you wouldnt be well dressed and well behaved like that, you would be lower functioning, unable to do basic tasks or take care of yourself. I probably have always been what I call A.D.D. To some extent, but then almost 9 years ago I almost died due to complications from a medication interaction for my diabetes. Was semi conscious for 4 days, and as sick (according to the doctors) as a person can be, and still be alive. So that caused harm to my brain which now has me so much weirder than I already was. Idk why anyone thinks it gives them clout to be so high maintenance. I would give anything to go back to February 1st 2016 and either not called 9-1-1 or gone back further to a time before taking the medication that has now been pulled by the FDA due to all the deaths.

    I have occasional tics but don't notice them unless they're larger movements. My friend noticed them and now keeps saying "bless you" whenever she notices it. She notices them more than I ever do because I'm so used to them. Only shitty thing abt her joke is it's getting old really fast especially because when she says it I realize I did it and then start trying not to and end up doing it more and annoying people around me so yeah. But no he's absolutely right, you get very used to that being your normal and most of the time I don't notice things like that because again it's normal for me. Also self diagnosis AS I WILL SAY AGAIN is valid but ONLY when it's used as a stepping stone to getting a real one and professional help for it. It should never be your end point. I've noticed a lot of autistic traits in myself for years and years but never gave it much thought. My friends noticed them too and about 4 years ago I did research. Turns out I have ADHD for sure and it's professionally diagnosed and I'm medicated. Things aren't always what you may think they are. For me it just ended up that the autistic traits I had were mostly the ones that overlap with ADHD. I did research, saw that overlap, mentioned the symptoms to my mom and the possibility of it being ADHD (didn't mention autism because shes... Particular about it. She only views autism as presenting in very low functioning ways. She doesn't rly see it as as wide of a spectrum as it is). She brought it up to the psychiatrist I was seeing who referred us to a specialist, I had testing, talked with the psychiatrist about the results, and ended up being diagnosed. Now Im better equiped to help myself when I'm struggling. That's the point of diagnosis.

    Im sorry I had to comment cause this is pissing me off.
    Before I got diagnosed with borderline personality disorder I barely knew what it was. Once I had heard of it, I researched a ton, I found a bunch of reputable sources just like that one woman.
    BUT YOU KNOW WHAT I FUCKING DID
    I TOOK IT TO MY THERAPISTS. I HAVE SEEN MORE THAN ONE. I TOOK IT TO FUCKING PROFESSIONALS AND GOT DIAGNOSED. I USED IT AS A STEPPING STONE, AS A LEARNING BLOCK TO HELP ME IN THERAPY TO FIGURE OUT IF I REALLY HAD IT OR NOT, I WAS NOT SET ON HAVING IT.

      Same like. I get not everyone has the financial privilege to get a diagnosis. But I sure as hell would do everything I could to save up and get at least an initial appointment with a therapist/psychiatrist.
