Great explanation and easy to follow. Just replaced the riser and had to cut mine to ensure it's level with the lawn when adding the sprinkler head. Thanks! Leftie loosey righty tighty!
Excellent instructions! I've had four sprinkler heads in the last two weeks break off where they connect to the the riser. One of them, this is the third time it's broken off. What is going on? I am not hitting them when I mow the lawn. I usually edge first around all the heads to trim up the thick St. Augustine grass that tends to grow over them fairly quickly. They are pretty deep and don't stick up.
Excellent! I have to replace a broken sprinkler head on my front lawn and this really helped a lot instead of paying someone $100 to do what amounts to a five minute job!
It depends on state. If the city wants to be strict catch you replacing any irrigation system/parts you need a license. Even though is easy to work on. I do landscaping jobs I think licensing for irrigation is the dumbest when is a simple Lego build. I would of understand if was a fire sprinkler system or electrician I totally support. BUT Irrigation..... Here in Texas is required but I haven't been stopped even though I do have license. BET after 3 years if I decided not to renew it and continue doing irrigation. I have to be so lucky 😂 to get stopped. In this industry mostly comes when placing new systems. After wards is just sprinkler heads repairs. Hot summer days 🤣 so many customers don't want to dig. Pipe broke or sprinkler head. Then seasons shutdowns or activate them. This is just ongoing business except on winter. Once hits spring you better be ready many sprinkler pipes broke during in winter. If a home owner has the time will do it on his own otherwise busy schedule and be with his family let others take care his problem even is costly but knows he paid someone guarantees the fix. Specially if you are not mostly at home working abroad while wife taking care kids. Has no one to repair the problem. Is the reason we charge the amount with limited warranty one time replacement. To keep our customers.
Hey I just started watching your videos on UA-cam like 15 days ago and they have help me a lot thanks and the other awesome thing it’s that I live in the bay are and last week I went to Sacramento actually Roseville and I saw you with your truck and trailer that’s was so cool . Hopefully I can see again and maybe talk to you . Keep working hard and have a great day
THANK YOU FOR THIS!!! Im just divorced and just my luck many things around my home start breaking down. Im so glad I found your video because I had NO IDEA what to do or where to start. The sprinkler at the end of the drive way broke off...Im pretty sure it was the garbage men ,cause the trash cans go where one of the sprinklers is at. Im in Houston ,TX and need to water my lawn or the heat kills my grass so THANK YOU !!!
The risers shown break so easy. Better to use the flex pipe swing joints and replace the black street elbows with white street elbows. The black street elbows break so much easier than the white ones.
I have broken sprinkler head on a zone that I don't run, but the water pressure to my whole system won't pressurize enough to pop up the sprinkler heads to the zone I do run. I'm not sure if I should replace the sprinkler head with a new one (I'll never water there), or cap it. Will doing either of these, theoretically speaking, allow my system to be pressurized?
Hi Kathleen, thank you for your comment! if these owns you are using are not pressurizing then that means there is a leak in those zones. As long as there is not water coming out of where the sprinkler head broke off in the zone that you do not use and there's no need to cap it or put a sprinkler head on it. I hope this helps!
That’s a good job , I seen your videos for a while , I left you a coment in one of you recent videos , keep up whit the good work! Greetings from Garden Grove CA 👍
Great video… the only thing you did wrong was to adjust the nozzle’s pointing direction with pliers… pliers will cause damage to the plastic on the sprinklers head damaging the seal every time it goes up and down… just adjust it by hand … it adjust like ratcheting !!!
I noticed this was in back of your home but mine is in the front yard..i have same problem...do i need to shut of water from main line in front where sidewalk(city) is..or as long as my valve is off ip
With the sprinkler valve turned "on", observe the problem...if the sprinkler head popped off and sitting on the ground...check the bottom of the sprinkler head (female) to see if parts of the riser (male) is still threaded inside the sprinkler head. It's obvious then the top portion of the riser broke. The risers are typically a softer plastic and less sturdy then the hard plastic of the sprinkler head. Be aware that the riser can break anywhere along it's length. It can break on the bottom end where it screws onto the PVC pipe. That would be obvious when you pick up the sprinkler head and you see a long piece of the riser still screwed in. If you don't see any part of the riser inside the bottom of the sprinkler head, it's possible it just got unscrewed somehow, but that's not likely. If the sprinkler head didn't pop-off and you see a gushing of water around it and you don't see anything obvious (cracks or damage sprinkler head from mowing or something) then it's possible the riser is partially broken but it hadn't completely torn off. If that's the case, by trying to unscrew the sprinkler head most likely you'll find out as the riser will surely break if it's torn. Btw, if the cap or body of the sprinkler head is slightly cracked...you'll see streams/spray of water. It's common sense really. Good luck!
You should have shown removing the broken riser from the head as the head didn't need to be replaced just the riser. If you were going to change the head you should have gone with the 4" head for future lawn growth. But most of all, you did not address the fact that this damage is caused when too much weight is on the head, when it is attached directly to the pipe. The weakest part (the riser) gives way. The best correction would be to put funny elbows on the pipe and head connected with a piece of funny pipe so you never have the problem again.
thank you! a truck ran over my corner sprinkler and it's leaking bad. was gonna cut and replace the pvc, but i'll instead just cut off the piece that is cracked, install a fitting to it instead and hook up the funny pipe.
You're exactly right. The issue he "repaired" is likely to happen repeatedly. Use funny pipe and barbed elbow fittings as well as a 4" spray head, and this would be able to handle average back yard abuse/traffic. I would never, ever "repair" the broken head in this video in the same manner.
Thank you so much Didn't have an idea on how to fix this at all. Because of you, I was able to fix and I looked as mr. Fixer in front of my wife. Great video great explanation Thank you again

@@M.Born007 well, i have been building and remodeling homes while Allen was still in high school, and i have also installed and repaired more sprinkler systems than i care to remember. i watch Allen's videos because he is a good hard working guy, and i want to support his channel. i'm not quite sure what the point of your comment is.
Won't the head easily snap again due to the riser being directly on the trunk line? I thought but I'm no Gardner that by having that flexible line as a buffer between the pvc trunk line and your sprinkler head it won't be as brittle. Basically the flexible line would absorb any bumps or hits to prevent this problem from happening again.
One sprinkler head with a string of water coming out of the top. Terrifying of course if you don't know anything about anything. Go to UA-cam, see how kind folks thought to make a video showing you how to deal with it. Problem becomes fixable. Thanks. :)

Thank you for this video. Had this exact problem and got it fixed for $5 and a little manual labor.
I am so glad this video was helpful !
My sprinkler head literally just broke off 10 min ago. Thank you for such an awesome how to video.

How do you know if its the riser or the sprinkler head that needs replacing? Is there a way to determine what to replace without having to do both?

How would I remove the riser piece when it broke just below the PVC level? Nothing to grip to unscrew.
They make an inside the pipe griper, the ones at home Depot don't work too well, but you may be able to pry it out gently with pliers
awesome, thanks
I use 1/2 in. and 3/4 in. Pipe Nipple Extractor, Red
by Armour Line for no digging most of the time
Love it! Great tools!

Okay, so my sprinkler head is still spraying like normal but it’s leaking a ton on the side shooting straight up in the air from underneath. Any idea?
Most likely a broken piece under the ground, either a pipe or a riser
Can I just replace the sprinkler head without replacing the riser?
Yes, you can! As long as the riser isn't broken!
What if the bottom of the riser broke into the white pipe and is now stuck? I tried plying it off but it’s stuck good in there
judging from the looks of that yard, i'd say a broken
sprinkler is the least of their problems.
Thanks for your comment norm!!

Ok I can do this. Lol
Ya! Its actually not that complicated! Best of luck!
I did all that but every time I turn the sprinkler back on it blows the sprinkler head off!
Probably means the head isn’t threaded on enough. Sprinkler head should probably have pipe dope on it as well where it screws into the riser.
I you sure you need to sprinkle that garden?
Grass? I see nothing but weeds. That also need to be cut.
