Dude thank you so much. The description of which finger to use is so helpful. I’ve been practicing this riff for a week now, only instead of using my middle finger and pinky on that second to last bar cord pick part, I was jumping my index over. Sucks because I got pretty comfortable with it before seeing your tutorial, and now I realize it’s smoother if I learn to use my middle and pinky there. Awesome instructions, best for this song I’ve found yet!

Think you might make a video for the rare “off key” intro he sometimes does? I love it’s weirdly sour quality but there aren’t many good audio versions out there. Cheers.

I've always wondered what the true way to play this song is per the album recording? During live shows he appears to play it this way with his hand in that fixed position, but I've seen some teach it where you slide down the neck of the guitar. It definitely sounds like he is sliding down the neck on the original recording, but I have never seen him play it that way on stage.
Geoff Warholak, this is the way he has always played it. There is a recording of him playing at a Blockbuster video store the day he got back from recording UTTAD and he plays it just like this. There are a few very very rare versions of this song when it was titled ‘after her’. They are playing it at Trax in Charlottesville in 1992-1993 and he still played it like this. I know that’s a long explanation but it’s accurate haha! Thanks for watching!!
Geoff! You're actually correct.... partially maybe. On UTTAD & Crash Lillywhite had Tim double all of Dave's acoustic guitar riffs and he layered them on the album for a fuller sound and Tim plays up and down the neck instead of this little circle that Dave plays! So on the album your keen ear may be hearing Tim's riff!
