    The first four Bathory albums are excellent. For the first two albums, Quorton asked his friend, Stefan Larsson, who played drums in a punk band, to help record the albums. This is why is there are no double bass drums.

    now this was an episode i was looking forward to and i was hoping it would include the crew which this episode has inc McEntee, as he's always knowledgeable, and an overall nice guy, had i great conversation with him at a local bar/pub/venue where i were the resident DJ, and we had many bands there, actually too many, but this would have been around 2006/'07 where they played with Rotting Christ and Krisiun? my mind is a bit blurry on that, as we had a few big 3 band packages like that over s a short period, but i ended up chatting with John for half an hour afterwards and we discussed our shared understanding of metal and H/C so a genuine guy, but so are all of you, agree with most of what you said, although i is a rather common knowledge that, apart from the 1st album, he did the rest of them on his own, you can clearly hear drum machine on The Return, of maybe not so clearly, but it's very evident for an experienced listener and someone who plays/speaks drums, and even to this day a drum machine will still struggle to get an organic cymbal/ hi-hat sound, something you can hear being the case on The Return and onwards too, now this also makes Bathory not only one of the first pioneers of BM but also the first one man project, the line up shown on Blood, Fire, Death has only ONE certain member performing on that album, Bathory also therefore were forever draped in myths, something which ALSO became a big and important part of the 2nd wave BM scene here in Norway, which i first witnessed unfold before becoming freinds with people involved, one man in particular, is someone i even can call one of my 5 closest friends ever, even helping me save my life, a very talented musician and legend AND pioneer too, i call him Gylve, which is his first name, know he has told me A LOT of inside information from underground scene of the '80, being part of the tape trading scene WW, AND we also have probably if not thee biggest, but one of them and also KEY figure in the metal underground namely Jon Kristiansen aka Metalion, whose name were to be found early on the thanx list on early Bathory albums, due to his legendary Slayer zine, and MANY more '80's/'90's underground classic albums n' Demos (very important for extreme metal in general back in those days anyways, still is, but not for the same reasons or to that extent/importance as then) anyhow, yes H/C punk were VERY influential on early extreme metal, talking UK bands like Discharge n' G.B.H. to name a few, as to Thomas/Ace/Quorthon claiming not having heard or being influenced by any bands was by DESIGN, again metal has always been soaked in myths, and the underground even more so, which got taken to an (in many ways an unfortunate) new level with the 2nd wave here in Norway, having said that, still bands WW were staring to go back to the roots of extreme metal, yet in many cases with an artsy take, much thanx to Celtic Frost there, and beyond, and of course having lyrics in Norwegian over here as well and much of this being a counter reaction to what was seen as more and more the too hip and polished by '91/'92 DM scenes of the world, with USA and Sweden being the main countries there as we all know, anyhow that "annoying" opening lick on the on the opening on Pace til Death, yes Venom did it to but like me and Gylve have talked about, is the simple fact of Quorthon giving a little nod and a DONE with this as in; this is the last album the will have fast paced songs like this, and yes this did mark the beginning of the viking sound, that would surprise all of us with what became the first viking metal album; Hammerheart, an album i've always struggled with myself, but it has grown on me after that, and even though with his shelved album like the unreleased and unfinished Blood Upon Ice album, which includes a bulk of the original recordings, but much being re-made, re-recorded and remixed and again "recorded" by this fictional trio, also what sadly became his 2 last albums Nordland I & II are being praised amongst the the later era, although apparently attempts of a couple of early gigs, Bathory also started the whole BM not being fit or a type of metal music that would not suit being performed onstage, this has changed much over the years, and i know Quorthon also had some AMBITIOUS ideas, which would not haven been possible too, but again more mysticism, plus i mean listen to the PURE introvert sound/approach that is The Return album, at least this was taken to heart and being taken very seriously and yes ACTUALLY true; by the Norwegian scene in the beginning, as of early '90's, though Darkthrone and Umrbzu (censorship) being the few remaining, and staying by their original ethos there, which again harkens back to Bathory, i could go on and on with much more info and insight but, it takes a lot of time just typing all of what turns out to be epic comments, as when i DO comment it's for a reason, but Ralph has given me heads up for this, and i appreciate that very much, here and more over at S.O.T., but thanx again for a great topic/tribute to the legendary mythical "band"/project that was Bathory and it's brainchild Quorthon (RIP)

      @@countralfus6408 thank you Ralph, that's very humbling to hear, i just feel strongly compelled to add some information about selected topics that means a lot to me and where i feel/know rather that i have something to add, i mean i made that comment when John were mentioning that "silly" intro lick on Pace Til Death, so i hadn't even seen further than that at that point, but when it comes to something like Bathory as the main topic, i was very excited to hear what you all had to say as i knew i would have a thing or 2 to say too hehe, but writing takes much more time and space so to speak than talking, but thanx again for the heads up like you who who knows alot about their shit to a fellow somebody who knows a thing or 2 about the same thing, all in the name of a deep passion for in this particular case Bathory and early BM, cheerz buddy and have a great weekend🙂

    First 7 albums (including Blood on Ice because most of it is from 89) are some of the best music ever. I even enjoy some songs from the last three albums (although they´re very spotty). Requiem is hilariously bad, but Octagon is utter trash. The only album of his (Besides his weird solo albums) where I do not find anything redeeming. My favourite is easily Under the sign of the Black mark, a top 10 metal album for me. I also hold Twilight of the Gods in high regard.

    Of course everyone loves the early Bathory albums, but it would have been nice to have more guests that were into the Viking era stuff as those albums are very important to a lot of people, and the last two albums he made were really incredible.

      I agree, I love the Viking era and especially those last two albums, Nordland I and II. That one guy that said it's just one long song is way off, bad take imo.

    • @amerigoormea
      @amerigoormea 20 днів тому +1

      Yes, this could have been a more interesting discussion with some more attention towards the viking stuff. It's the usual purist bullshit, usual complaints about Cold Lake (an album I loved when it came out and love to this day, really fun to listen to). I am around the same age of these guys (I am 50) but I never listened to music trying to distill a band into an idealistic version of itself (like reducing Bathory to the first three albums or Celtic Frost to less than half of their discography). You can like some things more than others, of course, but refusing to listen to albums because they don't stay stay in the same genre or formula is absurd in my opinion, and detrimental to your enjoyment of music. This said, I prefer early Bathory but I also love the viking stuff. Fuck I even listen to Octagon every now and then and don't find it unlistenable at all.

      @@amerigoormea Agree with everything here, I think Octagon hits hard when I'm in the mood for something ferocious or brutal. I like Requiem a lot too and have a shirt of that album.
