They caught lightning in a bottle: the "celebrities" you never heard of, the jokes, antics, all at 3:30 p.m. after school or during the summer when everyone just had to tune in. A show like this would be impossible today. Probably the best daytime show of all time.
Gene Rayburn was an absolute pirate, and Brett, Charles, Richard, Betty, and the rest were his dread pirate crew. Even 50ish years later, this show is an absolute riot and I can only imagine how much fun it must have been to be a contestant, cast member, or crew member.
I had a friend in college who's dad was a cameraman on the show and he said that they would shoots all these show back to back in a day and there was a lot of drinking onset so they would be hammered by the end of day, hence all the flubs.
My understanding was that a weeks worth of five shows were shot in one day. However, I believe they said that three were filmed before the "dinner break" and two after. Therefore those that were shot later in the day were after more alcohol was consumed and people were more intoxicated.

LOVE this show! Was on all through my high school years.
Occasionally, they get around to playing the game.
“I beg your pardon”
Pretty much sums up this entire video.
These clips from the original match game is the reason why Gene Rayburn was the FUNNIEST game show host EVER!!!
I know I am pretty randomly asking but do anybody know of a good website to watch newly released series online?
Match Game and Gene Rayburn.. perfect together!
Not technically the original since this was a revival of the 60's version, but I do agree, he was one of a kind.
