    I am taking off in the morning from California to New Mexico with a 4x8 Uhaul trailer fully packed and hooked up to my 2016 Kia Soul. It is my first time towing and I have been a nervous wreck about whether this would work or not. Seeing your video has eased so much of that stress off. Thank you so much! Kia Souls FTW!

    I see this video is old, but I have a 2010 manual transmission 2.0L Kia Soul. I had it wired and tow hitch installed some years ago. About a year ago I finally put it to the test of pulling a UHaul trailer loaded. I had no problems. Have owned my 2010 since new and still own it today. I have never had any problems with it. I still want to chop it and make a Kia Soul Truck out of it. This damn thing can haul anything. ❤

    Thanks for posting this video! I just finished towing a similar load on a 2015 Soul+ (2.0L w/ a 6-speed auto) all the way from Miami to Houston. You helped settle my nerves, yesterday, before heading out. You’re right - the car definitely doesn’t like 6th gear, which is alright with me, since I didn’t want to burn out the trans. One thing I will note is that the range on the cluster is wildly inaccurate until you get below 1/2 tank, then it gets you to a close approximation of range. Overall, I think we averaged 19 mpg over 1200 miles. Not bad, considering that much of North Florida is rolling hills, and you’re having to drop into 4th gear to climb each one.

    I am so happy to see this video. I’ve read that in the UK (or it could’ve been Australia maybe) that people tow with these cars regularly. I have a 2016 Soul+ with the 2.0 engine and I am considering a 4 x 8 or 5 x 8 U-Haul trailer for my upcoming move. However my journey will be much further from St. Petersburg Florida to Washington state, approximately 3000 Miles. I am very nervous about going that far with a trailer especially since I’ll be going over mountain ranges. I’ve heard nothing but good things about people towing with these cars though. It’s just a longer distance and the mountains that worry me. I checked with U-Haul and they offer hitches and wiring with about five different options for wiring so I’m a little confused which one is best. I’m thinking of just buying the hitch myself though and installing it and then having a shop install the wiring connections. You said you got horrible gas mileage, what kind of numbers are we talking??

      If you drive from Florida to Wash. State, you can go the southern route on I-10 across Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, to California and then head north. Might help. Also ask your insurance company how your insurance protects you when pulling a trailer. As for the correct hitch, go on U-Haul's website and select trailers and then you'll be prompted to enter the year/make/model of your car. As you continue you'll get to the screen that shows you which class hitch you'll need. Typically the Soul has a Class-I hitch and when I looked on their website, it wasn't good enough to get their lightest trailer. A Class-II hitch allows some weight, but nothing like you're hauling. So that might help you also. Good luck!

  • @ninemilliondollars
    @ninemilliondollars 4 роки тому +5

    As said, the manual does not recommend towing and since it does, any damage it causes may not be covered under warranty. What could happen? With the CVT/IVT transmissions having clutches in them, the wear and tear of pulling a trailer possibly could reduce their life. So while towing now doesn't seem to be an issue, when your mileage climbs higher, you may find the trans doesn't work.
    One thing to consider, however, is your Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR). On my 2020 2.0L Soul EX, it's 4023 lbs. and that includes 860 lbs. for all occupants and cargo. Adding a trailer could exceed that.

    If you read the fine print no vehicles can tow. Even big pickups say you can’t tow more than 1000-1500 lbs without trailer brakes. Any weight in the truck will reduce the weight down below that of any trailer. Basically everyone ignores the owners manual. It’s just a recommendation anyway.

    • @ninemilliondollars
      @ninemilliondollars 4 роки тому

      "Braked" means the trailer has independent brakes separate from the car and they slow the trailer. Otherwise, the car's brakes may not be able to handle the load especially on a downhill. Check with your insurance company first to see if they cover damage if you tow a trailer so you are not exposed to unknown risk. I have a 2020 Soul I just bought and the owner's manual states it's not recommended to two. But the hitch can be used for bicycles and cargo boxes.

      I kept the A/C in the mode that pulls air from the outside, so I could smell if anything was off. I also checked my oil every time I stopped.

      Hey Henry, welcome to the sunshine state!! To answer your questions: On our move from New York, we had a couple days of driving a solid 8+ hours.. You will be stopping every hour and a half or because the fuel milage is HORRIBLE while hauling a trailer.. EVERY time we stopped I checked the oil. Ours never burnt any additional oil, but if yours does, MAKE SURE YOU ADD OIL..
      Second, If the car starts overheating, PULL OVER IMMEDIATELY AND SHUT IT OFF. Our Soul never overheated, but it was definitely a concern of mine.. I drove with the a/c always blowing fresh air from the outside, and not recirculating, so I could smell anything burning.
      As for the wiring harness, your best bet would be to purchase a four prong generic wiring harness from Autozone, and have a shop install it.. Should cost about $50 each.. The installation is a process of opening up the rear taillights and wiring into the respective turn signal and brake wires... I don't mean to be arrogant, but if you have to ask that question, it's probably best to leave it up to the pros.. One minor hiccup is that the running lights must be wired into a separate 12v source than the car's running lights.. Not sure why, but with the extra load they wont work if wired through the car's running lights.
