    Background:
    The first mention of the piano trio appears in 1908, in his plans. However, it eventually took 6 more years before it was completed. Most of the composition occurred in the Basque town of Saint-Jean-de-Luz, close to his hometown of Ciboure. At this time, Ravel was also planning for a piano concerto called Zazpiak Bat, based on Basque themes. This was discarded, but part of it was used in the first movement. However, on the opening theme, Ravel’s biographer and friend Roland-Manuel suggest that it was from ice-cream vendors dancing a fandango not entirely Basque. The composition process was disrupted by concerts and Deux Mélodies Hébraïques. It came to a complete halt in June, but in order to enlist in the army, he finished it quickly, by September.
    The premiere was on 28 January 1915 in Salle Gaveau in Paris by the Société musicale indépendante. Alfredo Casella, Ernst Gabriel Willaume and Louis Feuillard premiered the work. Casella was unsatisfied with the other two’s capabilities, but this work enjoyed great success.
    Ravel’s intention behind this work is not known, but some suggest that he wanted to take a stance on the debate of forms started by Debussy’s Jeux and Stravinsky’s Le Sacre de Printemps, in favor of the classical forms. It was dedicated to Ravel’s counterpoint teacher André Gedalge, which could suggest the neo-classical origin of this piece.

    One of my favourite chamber works! There is something beautiful about the delicate yet emotionally charged writing and interaction between the instruments.

    This has been one of my favorite piano trios ever since I heard it for the first time. Thank you for this recording, as I had never heard this one before. This recording has (in my opinion) the most thrilling second movement of any recording of this work! I also love your inclusion of Ravel's own analysis of this beautiful work ❤️
