I spontaneously stumbled upon this gem of Ravel's during quarantine at the beginning of this year, when I was inspired to do a deep-dive into Piano Trios. He had me at those first phrases, and I seemed to had stepped into the beauty of the world itself. Have been listening to it every month since then and, the more I listen to it, the more it the more beauty it seems to speak. Debussy & Ravel, for me, have always manifested that kind of magic - where a chord or a phrase is so beautiful, but you do not know why. And now, I find this!! So enlightening, yet presented so light-heartedly. Thank you, thank you for unpacking this mysterious piece for us all, both with words and with such sweetly played music. My monthly listening sessions will never be the same!
Sometimes, Ravel & Debussy create mists in our musical imaginations. You can step into one of their pieces knowing a lot of theory and musical structures, but, when you step away, you end up saying to yourself: "What did I just listen to?" And that mystery seems to bring listeners back to these two composers. Thank you for making us understand even a little bit of that mystery.

Wonderful lecture. I’d love to hear him go deeper into the other movements.

I heard this piece for the first time last night. Researching it, I found this. Thanks for a thorough, and thoroughly enjoyable look deeper.

Erin Keefe, what a positively gorgeous sound! Your vibrato bathes us in a "sonorous fluid" to quote the composer's aesthetic goal. And with unflagging confidence your every phrase might as well be articulated in a court of law to persuade the jury to reach its unanimous verdict on the truth of your argument. This Trio's performance exceeds the words a brilliant lecture.
