Hi Ray & thanks mate. 👍 Have you ever grown any spice in the Voodoo Garden ? BTW, that was some tasty looking leaf mould in today's show. 😉 Cheers & all the best.
Great video my friend..I just visited Colombia...over in a place they called " El Eje Cafetero " where they grow a lot of coffee plus many delicious fruits. It's about in the heart of Colombia it self. Great climate , we found out how the campesinos grow ginger and many other plants and vegetables, fantastic trip. The ginger has a beautiful flower too.
I let mine go to a two year growth. I was wondering how to get more from what I'm currently growing, but you answered that. I will leave a peice or two behind and not water it over winter. Great video, covers it all :)
I always feel so inspired after watching your videos to someday have a backyard garden, but for now, will try to do some balcony gardening in my small apartment!
I have five pots 6X6 inch (15X15mm) that I started about a month ago. They are kept around 65F room temp and are kept on a heat pad. I'm hoping that by June I can move them outside onto the deck and into larger pots. Cheers from New England.
Mr. Beard, just the video I needed! I am planting ginger this season. Never tried before. We live near Chicago, IL and your video has definitely helped. God bless you and your family, Rob!
Another reason to grow your own ginger is to make sweet pickled ginger (Gari) like you get with your sushi. The ginger used for this is the young ginger which has red tones to it and is what creates that pink color vs. what we are used to seeing in the stores which is the older, yellow ginger. And it definitely has sprouts on it if not shoots/stalks still attached. I found it at the super large Japanese market here in town. It couldn't be easier to make and tastes better than anything I ever had in restaurants.
Thanks for your videos Rob. They have given me the confidence to grow my own crop of ginger. Your videos are very informative and cover alot of relevant information, keep up the good work!
I think it produces the little sprouts so you dont eat it but plant it. I felt bad, so I put some in a pot where I overwintered a Habanero. Both are surprisingly happy together.
Wow that was an incredible video the very best that I have seen educational and thank you for the encouragement next spring I will definitely plant some now that I have a great guide to growing Ginger! All the best!

Thanks for the very informative video! - I decided to give it a try this year (which was, seeing a fantastic spring and now early summer with temps up to 27-28 C in the day - which is, for end of may, beginning of june, incredible - a great idea). I live in western austria, on 700m above sea level. I started the project with organic ginger from peru in the beginning of february in my heated greenhouse, but they decided to start appearing at least 1,5-2 months later. Now, since nights are not below 12-14 degrees, I planted them out, and I can watch them growing every day - the largest ones are around 35-40cm in height. I cutted the rhizoms in pieces and had around 40 small pots in the end, which resulted in 38 bigger or larger strong plants. I am now cultivating them in my rised bed, in good, rich compost soil, mixed with horse fertilizer pellets plus organic guano with stone flour (??), covered with chopped straw from my last year giant garden reeds. The only not so ideal thing is, that they are getting 70% sun over the day, with a little more shadow in the late afternoon/evening hours - maybe too much sun. So I cross fingers for a long, warm summer!
That's fantastic to hear Alf. 👍👍 Would be great if you could keep me updated and let us know how the harvest goes for you. Cheers & happy growing Alf. 🌱🌱
Great video. Apparently, you can store this kind of root crop in buckets filled with sand. So no need to dehydrate or freeze them. I haven't tried it myself, but will do after this year's harvest.
Hi Bob! 1)I am in Maryland do I have to bring it inside? 2a)After I harvested it, what I should do to preserve some of them for next year? This is my first year planting ginger in two pots, they are growing beautifully! 2b) should I keep the smaller pot as it is, bring it inside for next year plant, in Spring I dig the ginger up and replant them? 3) In Maryland When should I harvest my ginger? Enjoy your garden! 👍🤗😅😂🤣. Thank you!
1- I'd take it inside as it looks like your in an area that gets snow over winter. 👍 2a - I've covered in this clip at the end ua-cam.com/video/OyRhS62HXIY/v-deo.html 2b- You could bring the pot in then transplant the lot into a larger pot next spring without disturbing the roots too much. 3- when the plant starts to die back is the best time I think. 👍 HTH some Ban. 👍
Thanks for the video. Grew mine last year for the first time in my greenhouse. Live in Geelong Victoria. Cut the ginger like i would a potato into maybe six sections. Sprouted ok but ended up with little more than i started with after 6 months or so. Ginger was from local supermarket so not sure what went wrong.
I found starting off with slightly larger pieces has often helped me get a larger yield. Youy can see the difference in our latest harvest clip if you're interested. ua-cam.com/video/I_ddT7HOT9A/v-deo.html Hope that helps some & have a top one. Rob.
Great video Rob! I'm trying ginger for the first time this year in zone 8a so your tips will come in very handy as the season moves along! Appreciate it! You're almost at 100K subs!
Very informative video Rob, I wish I could grow gingers like yours but I will try to follow those good tips you've given. Great presentation and thank you Rob.
Have had an easy time growing ginger. Letting them mature in ground does make a difference in it's flavor. Forgot one pot for two years and it was good and strong.
Will be laving all the plant in the wicking bed this season for the same reason Harry. 👍 Have enough plants around the patch that we can harvest it as we need it this year. Cheers & all the best.
Thank you for this video. Here in Zone 3 Canada - I am going to attempt to grow this in a challenging space as mostly an indoor plant. I may put it out for a few months this summer (in my location the summers are short and hot) but we'll see what happens. I am east and west facing and have quite a bit of shade. Let the experiment begin :)
I'm in Florida zone 9B. My ginger (and tumeric?) just came up this week. I thought I planted too soon cause we had some cold spurts like 43°. I don't think I can wait to years to harvest. I'm just gonna have to plant more.
They might just pull through yet Nancy. Covering them at night with a bucket may help protect them if the temp dips that low again. Hope they bounce back & give you a decent yield.
Wow, this was so informative and helpful! Thank you! I want to grow quite a bit of ginger for just being a home gardener. Most videos just give very vague info that would apply to nearly any plant. appreciate the tips!
@@habsahabdulrahman4126 You could try & lacto ferment it. I haven't tried it with ginger as whole pieces but it should work OK I'd think. Here;'s a link that may help, thefermentedfoody.com/how-do-you-ferment-ginger/ Cheers. :)
Thanks for all the info!!!! I appreciate it. I'm from zone 8 in the Northern Hemisphere, I'm looking forward to trying ginger in my greenhouse this year.
Excellent clip on ginger Rob!! Loved the way you you skillfully navigated your way through the topic covering various aspects 👍👍. I have some growing in a 16 inch wide pot in about an hour of sun ( the least sunny spot in all my 5 windows) since November, around 7 shoots growing . hopefully I'll have a ginger harvest in the next few months.
Hi MBG. Is great that you fond some space to grow some for yourself & hope the rhizome fill out nicely for you. Does it grow all year round there in Mumbai or does it die back during the cooler months ? Cheers 🙂
Unfortunately we don't really have cooler months any more , may be 4 to 6 weeks of 20 Celsius weather around December and January. Most folks here harvest their ginger before the monsoons in June and plant fresh rhizomes post monsoons in August. But yes one can grow through the year 😊.
It might prolong their growing season a bit Aurélien but they will still die off when the temp dips too low like they do for us here. Hope they grow well for you. 👍
My friggen cats keep killing my ginger and turmeric. They love to eat the new growth. I will try again this year. I will put a chicken wire fencing around the grow pots to keep them out until the leaves get more mature (they leave those alone). Thanks for the video, I learned a few more tips from you. Cheers
amazing ginger info .I hav found different kinds of ginger.from hawai ginger is very big bulbous and heavier. central america/carib. ginger is longer skinnier more tangy/tart. thanks:)
Hey Don Jon Lon. We tend to get the thicker ginger grown here. As I recall our larger variety was developed a few hours north from here a few decades back & is the main variety that we see ion the shops. We also grow a thin variety we were gifted from some Cambodian folks & find it has a very sweet scent & flavour. Doesn't give the huge yields but taste awesome in drinks. Cheers & happy growing. Rob.
Am impressed by your very informative vid. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with all others out there like myself! May it always go well with you and yours.
Glad you enjoyed it. I have a more comprehensive one here that shows it being planted as well as the harvest if it helps any, ua-cam.com/video/BcsrCWIDTRA/v-deo.html Cheers & happy growing.
I copied this from your other comment. ;) You certainly can eat it Dafin. It can also be used to start another crop next season but I find that a few don't make it & rot in the ground over winter. The fresh rhizome will grow a lot faster than the mother so I tend to process most of the mothers. They can be a bit stringy so I like to dehydrate them & turn them into powder but can be minced & frozen as well.
Thanks for watching folks & don't forget to click the subscribe button if you enjoyed the video.

Great video. Apparently, you can store this kind of root crop in buckets filled with sand. So no need to dehydrate or freeze them. I haven't tried it myself, but will do after this year's harvest.
Have used that method myself here. I like to freeze them as it takes less space & I have it on hand as I need it.
Cheers & happy growing.
Thankyou Fabulous - you explained the whole growing etc perfectly. I live in Brisbane & haven't had success but now I know why :)
Sorry to hear that Denise. Now is the time for us to start getting them into the soil if that helps any.
Hope you get a better crop this season.
Oh Rob I am so excited as I have 2 shoots YEAH !!!!!!!
2a - I've covered in this clip at the end ua-cam.com/video/OyRhS62HXIY/v-deo.html
2b- You could bring the pot in then transplant the lot into a larger pot next spring without disturbing the roots too much.
3- when the plant starts to die back is the best time I think. 👍
HTH some Ban. 👍
Great! I'm going to try it in Zone 4, Northwestern B.C. Canada. We have a heated greenhouse for palms and tropicals that cannot freeze over winter.
Sounds great Elaine & hope they grow well for you in there.🌱🌱👍
Cheers.
Perfect timing. I got organic ginger root from the store I want to grow. I use those cloth pots too.
Nice one Domo. Hope they grow well for you there mate.
Cheers.
Thanks Rob for the info. I am going to give ginger a small try this year.
How's the crop going Dave?
Seeing this just reminded me I haven't posted the Zoom hang out details. 😕
Cheers mate
Sorted :D Cheers mate.
I store my ginger simply by putting it into the freezer and grate whatever I need then pop it back into the freezer

Hope that helps some & have a top one.
Rob.
"...and Bob's your uncle.." 😂😂😂.
Please, may I use that??!!!
😁 Go for it. Is a fairly common saying here.👍👍
Cheers & have a top one.
You are a very good teacher. Very detailed. I learn a lot from your videos. Thank you.

@@RobsAquaponics 😇 Thanks
Thank you so much. Fantastic VDO and imformation.
Cheers Nongluk & happy growing.
i love it in green tea, with lemon
B has it the same way when we have some fresh rhizome in the kitchen.
Hi Brenda & thanks. Hope you get a great harvest from your plants.
Cheers & happy growing.
Rob
Have had an easy time growing ginger. Letting them mature in ground does make a difference in it's flavor. Forgot one pot for two years and it was good and strong.
Will be laving all the plant in the wicking bed this season for the same reason Harry. 👍 Have enough plants around the patch that we can harvest it as we need it this year.
Cheers & all the best.
Great tips on growing ginger :) Thanks for sharing :)
It's great you're having a shot at growing some Bella. 👍 Would like to hear how it goes for you.
Happy growing. 🌱🌱
@@RobsAquaponics I'll try to keep you updated. Thank you.
@@bellaspatiogarden3493 Any luck with yours?
I'm in Florida zone 9B. My ginger (and tumeric?) just came up this week. I thought I planted too soon cause we had some cold spurts like 43°. I don't think I can wait to years to harvest. I'm just gonna have to plant more.
They might just pull through yet Nancy. Covering them at night with a bucket may help protect them if the temp dips that low again.
Hope they bounce back & give you a decent yield.
Thank you for the video and for all your tips and information.
Hope it helps you grow a decent crop Lynda. 👍👍🌱
Wow, this was so informative and helpful! Thank you! I want to grow quite a bit of ginger for just being a home gardener. Most videos just give very vague info that would apply to nearly any plant. appreciate the tips!
Hi Christa. Am glad the clip has been able to help you out some & that you grow some spectacular plants.
Cheers & happy growing,
Rob. .🙂
I think I will plant them in a raised bed in my hoop house it stays warm or hot in there Thanks for sharing 💕💕💕God Bless💕💕💕
Glad I could help you out some 🙂
Cheers & happy growing 🌱🌱
I needed this as I have failed 12 times trying to grow ginger.
Hope the next crop does better for you RR 👍
Cheers & have a great one.

@@RobsAquaponics Thanks for d link on storage. Really appreciate it. One question though. Any alternative for vodka?
@@habsahabdulrahman4126 You could try & lacto ferment it. I haven't tried it with ginger as whole pieces but it should work OK I'd think.
Here;'s a link that may help,

i forgot a piece of ginger on my kitchen counter and over six months later new shoots appeared. plant is doing well!
Nice one Teri.
Happy growing.
Wow I didn't know about rehydrating the dehydrated pieces.
Sometimes they can be a bit too far gone & some rot may set in but on the whole it's worked OK for us.
Wonderful information. Thank you
Glad it was helpful SB.
Cheers & happy growing.
Thanks Rob. Going to start the process now. Very informative video. Hopefully the climate helps us in Mel..
No problem Mash.
Hope they do well for you.
Cheers.
Very informative and well presented. Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for all the info!!!! I appreciate it. I'm from zone 8 in the Northern Hemisphere, I'm looking forward to trying ginger in my greenhouse this year.
Hope it grows well for you Amelia. 🌱👍
Hey! Thanks for posting this!
I would have never got a chance to learn this stuff (urban setting).
No problem forseige & hope it helps you to grow a decent crop for yourself. 👍
Cheers & have a top one.
But yes one can grow through the year 😊.
thank you so very much ..been a great help and I greatly appreciate all you have taught me xx
Glad I could help some.
Happy growing. 🌱🌱
Thanks for the video I like it coz it has encouraged me to practice it
Hope you get a great harvest too mate. 😁🌱🌱🌱
I'm in Portland OR zone 8-9 , should I bring them in an unheated green house in the winter ?
Thank you for your kind spirit. It shines.
Cheers
Sorry to hear you're having issues Redstone. Hope they leave the next crop alone. 👍
Cheers & all the best,
Rob.
You can really grow ginger my friend Awesome tips Thank you
Thanks Mr Daniel. Hope all's well with you all on the homestead mate.

Glad it was helpful.
Happy growing. 🌱🌱
amazing ginger info .I hav found different kinds of ginger.from hawai ginger is very big bulbous and heavier. central america/carib. ginger is longer skinnier more tangy/tart.

Hello, very helpful video! Can you also eat the mother rhizome after the harvest or do you throw it away?
I copied this from your other comment. ;)
You certainly can eat it Dafin.
Awesome information mate!
Thanks Hal.
Happy growing mate. 🌱🌱👍
Thanks for this educative video. Kudos
No problem LT. Hope it helps you grow a load of ginger for yourself.
