That being said would love to share a Labbats with you on the Isle of Man. Always welcome. Can’t be bothered doing any videos etc but very busy over here. All the best

    I put a thermal block all the way around my window reveals and sat the windows on that and then I taped up all the seams with Tescon Vana tape for maximum air tightness. The thermal block act as a thermal block and stop/reduce the cold working its way into the windows from the brickwork. Should be a must in any installation now.

    A tip for you Roger, get yourself a gasket roller and you'll find wedging up a lot faster and easier as you can press down and then use the pointed end to really push the ends into the corners, you can also roll into the corner you started from and avoid stretching the gasket if its not corded

  • @darwill7834
    @darwill7834 2 роки тому +6

    Couple of thing I'd advise against bedding down on wet cement especially if not packed up with blocks or packers as your relying on just the fixing to hold a fair weight especially when glazed . If you have a nice tight gap between bottomand top of windows and no packing is required a bed of spray foam under the cill is a great way to seal underneath of the window cill . Also when fitting the cill only seal where the window frame sits so about 45mm from very back of cill forward then do all your fixing and get the dust out if the way as it makes silicone look horrendous. Soon as frames all fixed and after cleaning down finish your silicone work .

      I generally bed onto mortar, just the way I've always done it, both ways are fine. Main point that was missed was to dam up the cill either end to stop water ingress into brickwork. Also I'd put gasket in in one continuous loop notching the corners, and always pushing more gasket in because it will always shrink. Silcone over heads of screws in the cill.

    I'm not a fan of aluminium frames, I think flush fitting PVC & Timber is so much more attractive and they both perform so much better thermally than aluminium. I thought back gasketing was a thing of the past! I do see the current aluminium thing as a bit of a fad.

    The thermal break is there for a reason isn’t it? Putting a metal screw through it and into the wall is gonna impact thermal performance I’d have thought. Might not seem a lot but thermal bridges add up to significant heat loss on a well insulated property, even if it’s only 8 or 16 screws per window

    Mmm detail of this installation apart - I’m wondering how you can mechanically fix the bottom of a window without puncturing whatever waterproof membrane you have under it. In the video they screw through the dpc for instance … In my case I’ve got a Upvc window going into a timber frame opening -
    Membrane - external plastic cladding, and my architect says building control will expect a lead window tray to act as flashing to the cladding - but if we fire screws through it - what’s the point ? My window guy says “I’ll put a dollop of ct1
    /
    Sikafix under the screw that’ll be fine!”’ Doesn’t sound right to me. Any ideas anyone ? With modern windows can you just mechanically fix the sides and top ?

    • @SkillBuilder
      @SkillBuilder  Рік тому +1

      dont fix the bottom if it is a short window. If not then a dollop of silicone over the screw head is enough CT1 is even better

    Personally I wouldn't drill through the drainage channel and fix through the thermal break. Water runs into that channel and escapes into the drainage hole's! Asking for trouble!
    Also, if you're building frame work, put timbers under the frame so it doesn't scratch it 🤭

      Firstly setting the cill directly into mortar is a big no as an isolator should be used to prevent bi-matalic corrosion as the lime will corrode the paint and eventually eat away at the aluminium. Fixing through the thermal break is not correct as this will fatigue with expansion and contraction of the frame during hot and cold conditions. The aluminium will expand 1mm per meter so has a lot of movement. The cill should have the end of the profile damed with a low modulus silicone sealant to prevent water escaping to the internal finish. The wedge gasket should be sealed at all joints as this is the primary air seal. Just a couple of points for future installations.

    Builders fitting windows 🤦
    So much wrong with this. For starters shouldn't bed the cill on sand and cement can cause cold bridging regardless of the thermal break, should be a line of silicone and packers to level.
