The food banks in my area don't give out food like they were. But you can go to the Senior Center for breakfast and lunch for free Monday thru Friday. It only cost $5 a year. They also have yoga and things to keep you busy. If you need a ride they have a shuttle.
Gosh, I've been seeing all over the US how food banks are struggling and having to tighten the reins. Sad...there's so many hungry people/families. Thank you for sharing canning and preserving processes. I truly believe we are going to need to be more and more self sufficient in the future.
Great stuff and great video Carolina❤ Those canned rice and beans sound awesome. I love that your food bank lets volunteers take (at their own risk) food items that don't meet their criteria to get put out to the public. What a cool perk for helping out. I'm like you and get excited to try weird and wonderful new things too! Going to our local food pantry has certainly helped incorporate a more wide range of foods and benefited our diets than if we were solely surviving upon what I could afford to buy from the supermarket currently.
You are doing such a great job giving examples of how to use the food to maximize what you have and not waste any of the free food! We have a local collection site where we drop off extra can goods or food and drinks. Does the food bank know that you have a UA-cam channel? I bet there are a lot of people that have no idea how to cook. A few of your videos would help them! You could suggest to them if they don't have baking dishes, etc. that the thrift stores would be a good place to get what they need to cook and bake! Your doing a great job at using what you get and having ideas on what to make each time what is available! Your family has a wonderful mother and your husband a wonderful, creative wife!
I have used random left over pasta in pasta salads for my boys. Mix in with some veggies and pepperoni and cheese with Italian dressing and they didnt mind ! All eats the same :)
The trick to grits is butter, salt and lots of pepper. A couple over easy eggs, bacon and buttered toast. Yum! I like to mix my eggs, grits and bacon together and use my toast to push the grits, eggs and bacon mixture on my fork. That makes for some good eatin'.
I love watching the food pantry videos and see what you come up with. I like to make up my own recipes. Made could make nerd slushies, use them as sprinkles too.
I use candy as a topping for cakes , cupcakes, cookies, brownies, ice cream, that sort of thing. Have fun with it. Also couscous is great to use in place of rice and as something extra to put with dinner salads.
What a great haul! Such a great variety of pantry items. Does your food bank do a thanksgiving meal basket? Ours does and we pick it up on 11/18. We will get a turkey, stuffing, potatoes, ingredients to make green bean casserole, cranberry sauce and turkey gravy. It’s definitely a huge help. It is just me, my husband and my adult son this year. I don’t mind making a whole turkey because I do a lot with the left overs so we end up getting SEVERAL meals out of it.
Homemade pumpkin pie filling is wonderful, last year I canned up 145 pounds of fresh pumpkin. I have had an abundance for pies, breads, cakes and soups.
What income limit do u think one should completely stop going.? My husband thinks I shouldn’t go cuz we don’t need it as much as others. But the truth is it helps us.
Several pantries in my area follow a federal income guideline. They don’t really check for proof they just ask you if you make less than the number for your household. The dollar amount for our family of 4 is just under $7000 a month to qualify, which sounds like quite a lot to me. The limit goes up or down around $1000 for each person depending on your family size. There are also pantries that encourage anyone to come regardless of income as well. They just say if you need food, you qualify. If you want a personal opinion, I think if it helps you, then you should go. There’s always going to be someone in “greater need” than you, and someone in less need. Food banks generally get a lot of food and it goes in the trash at some point if ppl don’t take it.
I don't really think income should determine weather you should go or not. What is your bill to income ratio? That is what should be asked! If it helps then go!! You saving food waste and helping your wallet!
Hey Carolina you could use the nerds and some of the kiddos Halloween candy( mms, skittles) when the kids make ghramcracker houses at Christmas. I also saw that you could use pretzel sticks to make houses. When you use the pretzels the houses look like log cabins. I would have so much fun with you and the kiddos. Take care blessing to you and the family:)
I put the maraschino cherries in chocolate chip cookies for "Christmas chocolate chip" cookies. Risotto is delicious with chopped onion, garlic, tomato sauce and Italian sausage. I make the sauce with the sausage, onion and garlic, add sauce and enough water to cook the rice. Its like spaghetti, but with rice! Yummo.
Pumpkin puree is super easy, and making your own just makes pumpkin pie taste so much better. I cook my pumpkins in the crockpot, super easy, scoop, puree and you're ready for anything that requires pumpkin. 😊
@mamabairds I usually cut my pumpkin, so it fits in the crockpot, seed it, then add about a 1/2 cup of water. When I puree it, I add a touch more water. It just depends on how smooth you want your puree. Fresh puree really does make a difference in taste, texture and color of the pies. Enjoy
Thank you for continuing to discuss food waste. Also for those odd n ends of pasta types..if you make a lasagna in the crockpot you can use that pasta instead of lasagna noodles.
Awesome video, Carolina! You got some great items., especially all the pasta and bread! Looking forward to freezer meals. Also, the Margaret Holmes beans and rice. I'd bet they are a bit spicy. I love all her veggies and usually have red pepper flakes etc... Thanks so much and have a great day! ❣️🥰
Yay! Early bird viewing! I love this feature of youtube and I am loving this food bank haul and those dishes look AWESOME! The suggestions on how you could change it up is wonderful!
Entenmann’s (pronounced En-te-man’s) was a private bakery in Long Island, NY. They had an outlet store where you could get good deals…like when the frosting on a cake went on crooked. It use to be regional to NY but they sold and became nationwide.
Love your enthusiasm! Thank you for taking the stigma from using food resources. No one should go hunger. Also, can you rinse the pepper off the bacon?
Like a lot of those suggestions on here about the use of nerds. But there is one use I would not recommend, and that is to leave your 3 year old child alone with them. My son put nerds in his ears when he was three. Bless his little heart I took him to the doctor and they used warm water to rinse them out of his ear canal and they got a chuckle out of it as well. LOL
You have alot of good food to feed your family you should feel really blessed that you have such good food pantries to go to thanks for volunteering . I am not able to because I have bad arthritis 😂and have to use a cane to get around a d have a limit of use on my right arm and hand.. Have a good day...
Another great haul and video!!❤🎉 can’t wait to see more Videos of thanksgiving sides, those pumpkin pie pumpkin’s are so easy to roast in oven and smash to make pies with and it’s delicious! ❤
We actually have a huge store where i live and they sell bulk items really cheap that are either short dated or past its best before i go there all the time and never had anything that was bad yet!
Hello from 🇦🇺, I am struggling to come up with some ideas as to what I can do with pork mince. Plenty of extras, loads of different vegetables, pastry, stock (different flavours), breads, pasta, spaghetti, rice's and more. Any suggestions? Your videos have been giving me more ideas although I am stuck on the pork mince. Have a great day!
You can interchange pork mince with hamburger for pretty much any recipe. Also a lot of recipes are good with pork mince and hamburger combined such as meatloaf.
I can’t believe how much food you guys can get, I’m not complaining but I am lol we get way less than that but any little helps so I appreciate ,but yours looks awesome 😊you can use the nerds in rice krispy treats
Cheesey grits are yummy like a mash potato substitute to add to a meal. You know meat loaf grits and veggies. I love grits. You can also make it like a desert, just cook the grits in milk, add fruit and some brown sugar and some butter. Yum yum
maybe make or get a gingerbread kit and use the nerds to decorate it! We usally buy discounted kits after season just to make them since the kits are usually not tasty so we do not care of the date or the season just something fun to do. Or just make some sugar cookies and let the kids decorate a few of them themself.
Honey if you want some of the best southern grits let this southern mama tell you how it's done 🤣🤣🤣put half milk half water per instructions of the am out of grits you are going to cook put about 2 tsps. Big spoons of salt in that and 4 beeping table spoons of butter. Now don't put your hits until that water gets hot not boiling. When you get them in there start stirring when you see it start to boil cut it down to a slow cook. Yes it's going to still take more than that 5 minutes😂. Now Don't leave them.. Keep stirring them at a very low boil. If they pop you they are to high. Don't think I'm crazy but keep adding butter till they look a little yellow and get thick and glossy and creamy. About 20 minutes. Then you will have to put a pinch of pepper and taste for the need for more salt. Enjoy😊
I use the dry Italian dressing for a pasta salad, use any pasta you want, throw in a bit of onion, black olives and tomatoes, it is so good 🙂 I went to our local Food Bank on Friday, sadly most of the shelves were empty and no produce at all. But was very grateful for what I was able to get..
Hey there Carolina! I’m new and I have been binging your vids. Love them so much! ❤ I love mayo on breakfast sandwiches also- I thought I was the only one who did that! And my hubby has bday 3-16 😊 super close to yours. Keep on keeping on mama! Oh and I also homeschool!
Hey! That's awesome your husband and I are almost bday twins! Thanks for being here! So happy to meet another homeschooling mama! Did you join my facebook?

Wow, thank you!
I’m so glad that I’m not the only one that freezes my spinach without blanching! I like couscous, but I never make it. I absolutely love cheesy grits.
Glad you guys donate to the animals too❤❤❤great food ideas
