    The food banks in my area don't give out food like they were. But you can go to the Senior Center for breakfast and lunch for free Monday thru Friday. It only cost $5 a year. They also have yoga and things to keep you busy. If you need a ride they have a shuttle.

    Gosh, I've been seeing all over the US how food banks are struggling and having to tighten the reins. Sad...there's so many hungry people/families.
    Thank you for sharing canning and preserving processes. I truly believe we are going to need to be more and more self sufficient in the future.

    Great stuff and great video Carolina❤ Those canned rice and beans sound awesome. I love that your food bank lets volunteers take (at their own risk) food items that don't meet their criteria to get put out to the public. What a cool perk for helping out. I'm like you and get excited to try weird and wonderful new things too! Going to our local food pantry has certainly helped incorporate a more wide range of foods and benefited our diets than if we were solely surviving upon what I could afford to buy from the supermarket currently.

    You are doing such a great job giving examples of how to use the food to maximize what you have and not waste any of the free food! We have a local collection site where we drop off extra can goods or food and drinks. Does the food bank know that you have a UA-cam channel? I bet there are a lot of people that have no idea how to cook. A few of your videos would help them! You could suggest to them if they don't have baking dishes, etc. that the thrift stores would be a good place to get what they need to cook and bake! Your doing a great job at using what you get and having ideas on what to make each time what is available! Your family has a wonderful mother and your husband a wonderful, creative wife!

    The trick to grits is butter, salt and lots of pepper. A couple over easy eggs, bacon and buttered toast. Yum! I like to mix my eggs, grits and bacon together and use my toast to push the grits, eggs and bacon mixture on my fork. That makes for some good eatin'.

    What a great haul! Such a great variety of pantry items. Does your food bank do a thanksgiving meal basket? Ours does and we pick it up on 11/18. We will get a turkey, stuffing, potatoes, ingredients to make green bean casserole, cranberry sauce and turkey gravy. It’s definitely a huge help. It is just me, my husband and my adult son this year. I don’t mind making a whole turkey because I do a lot with the left overs so we end up getting SEVERAL meals out of it.

      Several pantries in my area follow a federal income guideline. They don’t really check for proof they just ask you if you make less than the number for your household. The dollar amount for our family of 4 is just under $7000 a month to qualify, which sounds like quite a lot to me. The limit goes up or down around $1000 for each person depending on your family size. There are also pantries that encourage anyone to come regardless of income as well. They just say if you need food, you qualify. If you want a personal opinion, I think if it helps you, then you should go. There’s always going to be someone in “greater need” than you, and someone in less need. Food banks generally get a lot of food and it goes in the trash at some point if ppl don’t take it.

    • @mamabairds
      @mamabairds  11 місяців тому

      I don't really think income should determine weather you should go or not. What is your bill to income ratio? That is what should be asked! If it helps then go!! You saving food waste and helping your wallet!

      @mamabairds I usually cut my pumpkin, so it fits in the crockpot, seed it, then add about a 1/2 cup of water. When I puree it, I add a touch more water. It just depends on how smooth you want your puree. Fresh puree really does make a difference in taste, texture and color of the pies. Enjoy

    Honey if you want some of the best southern grits let this southern mama tell you how it's done 🤣🤣🤣put half milk half water per instructions of the am out of grits you are going to cook put about 2 tsps. Big spoons of salt in that and 4 beeping table spoons of butter. Now don't put your hits until that water gets hot not boiling. When you get them in there start stirring when you see it start to boil cut it down to a slow cook. Yes it's going to still take more than that 5 minutes😂. Now Don't leave them.. Keep stirring them at a very low boil. If they pop you they are to high. Don't think I'm crazy but keep adding butter till they look a little yellow and get thick and glossy and creamy. About 20 minutes. Then you will have to put a pinch of pepper and taste for the need for more salt. Enjoy😊

      @mamabairds  11 місяців тому

      It's the lost of the value of the dollar and the cost of food. It's higher than the Great Depression. As well as people back then knew how to garden, raise animals, stretch food, and cut cost. The generations now a days have no idea nor the ability to do any of that and are forced to pay the increased prices and can't do anything about it. Thus living in worse times than the Great Depression. In my opinion I'll add.

    • @smlorrin
      @smlorrin 11 місяців тому

      @@mamabairds The biggest issue with the Great Depression, in my opinion, is that *_so_* many people lost their jobs and savings due to the stock market crash, which was catastrophic. The cost of food might be higher now, but we don't have the effects of a stock market crash. My mother lived during the Great Depression, and it's hard to imagine how difficult it was for families, especially since there wasn't really birth control at that time in the same way there is now. (i.e., families tended to be much bigger.)
